Ice fishing for a burbot in Yakutia - the coldest inhabited place in the world!
One of my favourite winter activities - ice fishing! Very exciting and also difficult because of much work. In this video I show how we ice fish in Yakutia.
Fishing for a burbot is legal in Yakutia, but no more than 5 tails per day. It was my first time when we caught a such a big burbot. The most precious part of a burbot is its liver - absolute delicacy.

That was the sweetest young woman I have ever heard on KZhead. She seems to be kind and polite. Congratulations to her parents!!
You’re so articulate in speaking proper, correct English better than a native speaker. Great education system!👌
From the land of 10000 lakes Minnesota, USA. Was watching ice fishing videos and ended up in Yakutia!! Beautiful, untapped winter wonderland and wilderness you guys have there.
It's fascinating how these simple facts of your life appear superhuman to most outsiders.
This woman is so kind that it is unbelievable. Well done to your parents.

These people are so kind and loving. Thank you.
This might be weird but these video updates makes me so happy and relaxed. It's so nice to experience a new culture and location in such a relaxed and welcoming manner.

I think this kind of fishing is more of hobby than survival. Too much energy and gasoline cost for such fish
What an exhilarating and unique look at ice fishing for giant burbot in the extreme climate of Yakutia! This video truly highlighted the tenacity and resourcefulness required to pursue this traditional practice in one of the coldest inhabited places on Earth. Right from the start, I was completely absorbed watching the meticulous process of cutting through thick layers of ice, setting up the intricate fishing system, and patiently awaiting a bite - all while enduring brutally frigid temperatures. The visuals of the vast frozen landscapes were simply breathtaking. I have profound respect for the skills and perseverance on display. Clearly this type of subsistence fishing is deeply woven into the cultural fabric, passed down over generations. Witnessing the pure joy on the faces when that massive burbot was finally landed really drove home the stakes and rewards. But beyond the actual fishing action, I appreciated the insights into how this activity carries such importance for maintaining traditions, providing food sources, and bringing communities together during the harsh Yakutian winters. The glimpses into prepping and cooking the prized burbot liver were really interesting as well. Videos like this open my eyes to unique ways of life I'd never even imagined existed. While the environments seem unimaginably forbidding to an outsider like me, you capture the warmth and richness of cultures adapted to thrive in harmony with their extreme conditions. An utterly captivating educational experience!
It’s so beautiful with the sun reflecting on the snow. I love your videos. I hope you continue and also make videos of your home in the summer.
My jaw dropped when you pulled that absolute unit out of the water. That’s a lot of good eating right there!
Wow, that was amazing! I`ve done ice-fishing once in my life - I was 13, the ice was 10 cm "thick" - and I enjoyed it very much. That happened in Hungary in the 80`s. This one is a different level in ice fishing and I really would like to try it. Hope, I will be able to organize it. Thanks for this video, loved it.
I’m an American from SoCal and I moved to Siberia and I’ve given ice fishing a try it’s harder than normal fishing 😂

Hi Maria, Hello from India! Life in Yakutia is not easy and we can’t even imagine…hats off to all the people out there and the way you describe is very relaxing, detailing is very clean… great efforts! If time permits I’d like to visit Yakutia some day… take care and best wishes to you, your family and everyone 🙌🏻💐😊
I’m always shocked and amazed by the size of Russian burbot here in the Midwest United States people can spend their whole lives burbot fishing and never even see a fish of that size
Same in Canada....The largest I have ever caught was 10 lbs, average was 7. The only time I have ever caught burbot was ice fishing while trying to catch lake trout....I'm not sure if a channel cat(Ottawa river) is considered a burbot, if so my cousin caught a 30pounder years ago.
More people fish in North America so we don't give the fish a chance to grow. I can remember seeing huge silver salmon in the PNW but with the growth in population and increased fishing they get smaller every year.

Cool video... It gets pretty cold where I live too. We fish in very cold weather - using an ice shanty with propane heat. But severe cold means very high barometric pressure and generally poor fishing. I guess in Yakutia - severe barometric pressure is the norm. Burbot, here in MN, are not considered a game fish and people don't actively seek them. They look prehistoric. But they have a tender and tasty white flesh. Just wonderful table fare. Hope the young lady gives us more peeks into the culture of her people.
I love this! I live on a smaller lake near Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories in Canada, and I fish the same fish and I get my water the same way, with my suv on a ice road. We don’t get burbot quite as big, but I love to get burbot in the winter, the liver is especially tasty. Right now the ice is about 3 feet thick. I keep a line in the lake, but i have a 6 inch piece of styrofoam insulation, about 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 feet, that is covered with plywood. I keep it on top of the hole, and pile snow on top so it stays insulated . Then the next day, i dig it up and the hole is still open. Also, I’ve never seen anyone anchor the fish line like that, only for nets. Makes sense for burbot. When I’m just baiting the fish, I just use a line going straight down from a stick on top of the hole. But if it freezes over you have to be careful and you can’t use the auger just the spear. The fish here are: burbot, trout, pike, white fish, inconnu, pickerel, and arctic grayling.
I live in Canada so this seems normal to me, I dont think much of it. It's when I read the comments on here when I realize that most people on earth have never experienced a true winter season. Great video!
I am in B.C., everything o standstill when/ if temp reaches - 10 😆
Canada gets cold sure but what part of Canada is always frozen like this and is inhabited like this
@@Wild-Siberia Siberia isnt frozen all year, neither is northern Canada. -35 is very common in Canada during winter and we have more uninhabited land than Russia. Both countries are similar in size but Canada has 1/3 the population. In northern parts of Canada winter temps of -50 or even -60 are common. I've seen -55 myself. So Yakutia holds the record for coldest inhabited place on earth but not by a whole lot.
@@differentfins yea I agree I worked In the North Dakota oil fields it hits -40 or less easily
@@Wild-Siberia In the prairies that wind will kill you! -40 but with no trees to slow the wind down it can feel much colder. I live just north-east of North Dakota. Cheers

Ghanaian here too, this makes me appreciate our weather conditions even more.
Burbot is so delicious! Here in Finland we also fish it and eat it right now in the winter season. It's easier to catch burbot in the winter because during the summer it dwells in the bottom of the lake and in the winter it's near the surface.
Mr.Larry, Burbot or fresh water cod, or in Minnesota also called both proper Burbot and Eel Pout because of the tail and noise they make spawn in the winter and thus are always bothering walleye and perch fishermen, women, children.
@@JeffreyS536 ~ Burbot is the tastiest of all fishes even though it's a fresh water fish. Better than lobster in both taste and texture.
Roger Tycholiz but it isn’t bad. I prefer walleye over it. But each has their own taste.
