GAS GAS GAS
I’m ngl bro I’d laugh my ass off at first but shit my pants if he didn’t stop
😂
Well thats scary 😶
That bridge is nothing compared to the lake Pontchartrain bridge in Louisiana, which is more than 20 miles long.
Church
god help you if it’s a foggy morning commute lmao
The one to new orleans?
ain’t as tall thi
Yeah but that’s nowhere near as tall and high capacity as the bay bridge tho
The Lake Pontchartrain bridge in New Orleans is about the same length of the hong kong bridge at something like 30 miles and its over open water for most of it.
Yeah, it takes absolutely forever to cross
This bridge is really high compared to it. This one isn't as long, but it goes up and down in a curved shape. It's pretty intense. I have driven over it a bunch, and I can't stand letting someone else do it freaks me out even more.
Lake Pontchartrain Causeway still holds the record for longest bridge without touching land at any point, since it’s just a straight shot from Metairie to Mandeville with no islands.
You guys remember the OLD Mississippi River Bridge in Baton Rouge by the Exxon Plant?? THAT……was creepy.
That’s a lot smaller than the bay bridge tho in terms of hight and capacity
You want scary American bridges? Try the I-10 bridge in Lake Charles, Louisiana, near the Texas border. It's rated significantly lower than the one that randomly collapsed a few years ago. Also the nearby Atchafalya bridge. It's like a 2 lane country road with no way out except over the edge and into the swamp.
I think I took this in the mid 90s with my dad. We went over a bridge and before we got on he told me and my brother to not say a word and I’ve never seen him so stressed out. The bridge was swaying back and forth. I’m not 100% sure. All I know is directly afterwards there was a store and he bought us these big wooden train whistles
@Bobby how did you get back to the other side with your dad and brother ?
@Bobby The one in Lake Charles is very short and waaay too tall for how short it is. Clearly falling apart. And just for ominous effect, the rusty "guard rails" have crossed flintlock pistols on them. The Atchafalaya bridge is kinda opposite. Reeeeally long and low. It stretches for miles without any opportunity for exit. The only thing around it, before it, or after it is a stagnant, reptile and parasite filled swamp. There's only two narrow lanes with concrete walls on each side. So whenever there's a wreck everyone goes bouncing around like the deadliest game of pinball.
This was my thought exactly the I-10 bridge holds the record for scariest. People routinely break down or run out of gas before cresting the top. I know several folks that have been pushed over the top by another vehicle. They would then have enough momentum to roll into that old gas station in Westlake.
Alligators must have build a dinner underneath it
Chesapeake bay bridge tunnel is a different bridge/tunnel over the tip of the Delmarva peninsula that connects to the Hampton roads area in VA.This bridge is the Chesapeake bay bridge. Which is in Annapolis and connects to the eastern shore MD.
I actually really love this one because its relatively low to the water and has an amazing view at sunrise/sunset
Florida Key Wests, seven mile bridge says: " HOLD MY BEER."
Lake Ponchartrain causeway says hold my beer three times over.
@CoderShare yeah but it's not as exposed to the Atlantic Ocean and its unforgiving weather. I'm not saying that hurricanes or storms don't mess them up, just that bad weather is more scarry over open water, and that has built up in the Atlantic without barely making landfall.
I rode my bike from Miami to Key West a couple years ago. That bridge is a day at the beach, literally. It's mostly flat. It doesn't go very high in elevation. You can see ahead for miles. On the other hand, the Chesapeake Bay bridge is steep, narrow and claustrophobic at times.
I'm not worried about that bridge, because I dont think the water's that deep there.
Big difference is the key west "bridge" is only 20 or so feet fromt the water. The bay bridge is hundreds of feet from the water, and 90% of the bridge is grates. The bridge also sways in the wind
check out our Louisiana bridges now those are terrifying
The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway is the longest over water bridge in the world. It’s 24miles long and sick to drive across
Sick to drive across as in sick of being on this fucking bridge...looking for land like Kevin Costner in Waterworld 😂
@@anonymousistre3248 bit of a scary drive considering the general quality of Louisiana’s road infrastructure. I had to go on field trips to Audubon Aquarium a lot as a kid, and they had a room looking into a gigantic tank through a massive floor to ceiling acrylic panel that was filled with everything swimming in Lake Pontchartrain, rays and schools of fish and nurse sharks and such, and it scared the shit out of me because I knew that if the bridge collapsed or my parents somehow crashed the car over the side, those were all the fish that would definitely be eating me lol
I have yet to experience a bridge scarier than the one over the Columbia river in Astoria, OR. It’s like driving into the sky on a narrow road. It suddenly felt like I was incapable of driving in a straight line. So I had to fixate on the yellow lines and keeping my car to the right of them.
The hood river bridge over the Columbia River is probably the scariest I have driven. There were wide logging trucks passing very close to me and I felt like I was going to hit them. The decking is also metal grating so it is very noisy as you drive over it.
Oh man, the one _next_ to the Astoria-Megler bridge scares me more. The Youngs Bay Bridge hovers right over the water, and on stormy days the water is choppy, the wind is beating your car, and you can't set the wipers to clear the rain fast enough. It's basically 360° water and you're driving on/in the ocean. Compared to that, the other bridge feels pretty chill. Also the Bridge of the Gods further up the Columbia in Cascade Locks is pretty freaky. Open steel girders that ring as you drive over them, there's a 15 MPH limit, and you can look right down through the driving surface to the river many feet below. Knowing that it's so old makes it even scarier every time we drive across, but it's still one of my favorite bridges.
@@Kira_Martel I love how so many of us are talking about the bridges over and near the Columbia River. 😂 I'll add that I never drive in the slow lane going over the I-205 bridge over the Columbia River nor over the I-405 bridge over the Willamette River. The combination of wind gusts and distracted drivers makes me keep an extra lane of asphalt between myself and the edge. It was so sad when the guy went off the I-205 during a winter storm because the snow plows had essentially created a frozen berm ramp up and over the concrete edge barriers.😔
@@elizabethbottroff1218 Oh yes, that accident on the Glenn Jackson/I-205 bridge was very sad. Hopefully a grim lesson learned for all future snow plow drivers. I personally don't mind the Fremont/I-405 bridge, but I've been going over it since I was a baby, and it's fairly straight and also one of the newest bridges (and another one of my favorites). Though, seeing them defer maintenance on it does make me more nervous as I get older, and the way you can feel the cars passing on the other level during stop-and-go traffic is a bit unnerving. The Marquam/I-5 bridge is also a bit sketchy. The curve makes being on the outside edge feel like you're going to fly off, even on the westbound/lower level. My mom has been afraid of it pretty much since it opened, because of its design and because around the time it opened there was a movie that came out that had a bridge collapse in it, and the bridge was eerily similar to the Marquam in appearance.
I love driving over the Astoria-Megler bridge. For me, it’s as close to driving over the open ocean waters as it gets. Bonus: can’t help but think of Arnold in Kindergarten Cop whenever I visit Astoria. “It’s not a tumor”
I grew up on, and still live on the Delmarva Peninsula which the Chesapeake Bay Bridge connects to the mainland US (the peninsula is technically mainland US but it’s a giant freakin island that connects at one point up north, as far as I’m concerned it’s not mainland US) I got used to going over the bridge VERY quickly having to go over it for school trips, vacations, trips to doctors in the big city (Baltimore, Annapolis, DC). It’s nothing more than floating road to me at this point. Honestly I enjoy going over it, I might be a good fit for the drive over service. What’s REALLY scary is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge TUNNEL. It connects the bottom of the peninsula (Kiptopeke, VA) to Norfolk, VA. Simply described, it’s claustrophobic. Veer left and it’s a head on collision, veer right and say goodbye to your mirrors and pretty paint job.
I crossed this thing, weekly, for 15 years of OTR trucking. Maybe it’s because I’m weird, or morbid but I LOVE this bridge! It’s an absolute blast! Hundreds of feet in the air, the Chesapeake bay below, naught but a wee concrete divider between you and a drop long enough to think about it on your way to certain death, and NOBODY is doing the speed limit! 🎉
I feel like the Mackinac bridge is way scarier than that bridge. Especially during a snowstorm right before they shut it down.
As one who lives in the UP I have to agree with you 100%. Nothing like driving the Big Mac in a snow storm
Mackinac is way scarier…. You can see through it. You are driving on metal grates. I’m not normally terrified by bridges but the mighty max scares me.
Check out the Causeway in New Orleans. Not over ocean but 23 miles over water
Could have sworn Vice did a story on this service years ago.
Yes! I think you're right! I thought of either Vice or Vox putting a video out about the service where they interviewed a few different customers and asked why they used the service and why the bridge scared them. Then they interviewed a couple drivers and showed the few customers being driven over. I knew I'd seen something about it some time ago lol.
@@LilyoftheLake14 exactly one of those two channels and thought it was silly but apparently business was pretty good for that service.
Grew up in the DMV... Once I was old enough, my Mom would have me drive across the Bay Bridge. 😂
That’s a sad life, the Department of Motor Vehicles sucks
It is scary AF
Been on that bridge with some rainy wind. Make sure your tires aren't bald.
There is a similar service for the Mackinac bridge. It is free.
I remember crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in the early 70’s. This brings back memories. Thanks.
Going over this bridge was one of my favorite parts of driving down from New York to North Carolina for vacation as a kid
Some people are really terrified of bridges and honestly I get why. I don't mind driving on them but I've been on plenty of bridges that have sidewalks for bikers and pedestrians and I would absolutely not want to walk along those. Having a service that helps people who are afraid of driving these bridges is really cool. It let's them get where they need to go and is safer than having someone who's totally freaked out and anxious behind the wheel.
I was surprised to learn that there are a lot of people who are afraid of driving over bridges and a really long or high bridge is terrifying for them. I got a free trip from Birmingham to Houston because a friend needed someone to drive over the bridges for her. There are some pretty long bridges in Mississippi and Louisiana.
Videos of that bridge inspired one of my most memorable dreams in recent times. It was way scarier in my dream, it was multi decker, and the scariest part was that you had no way of knowing which deck you'd be shoved into nor where you'd emerge.
I drove over that bridge in a big truck on a nice bright sunny day, it was awesome. The Chesapeake bay bridge tunnel. I felt like I was driving on water and will never forget that trip.
driver: this is terrifying random guy: let me do it for you
Some people are just afraid of bridges. My late sister was always very afraid of them. It seemed to just be innate as nothing seemed to happen to cause it. It was just always a fear for her.
I drove over this bridge for the first time in October driving from NJ to VA, and I will admit, it was scary as hell.
My mother actually knew someone who was a "frequent flyer" on that drive-over service. Honestly, I love the bridge, I wish I could drive and look out over the water at the same time.
It also goes underwater twice
We used to have an even scarier bridge in Florida… until it collapsed on one side and people drove into the sea because the fog was so thick they couldn’t see the break.
Sunshine Skyway bridge, 1980, in case anyone was wondering.
@@shotguncreeper Thank you! I couldn’t remember the name! Man, that was terrifying!
This is just an ad for that service 😂
Yeah I live in Baltimore and every time I gotta Ocean City I get so nervous driving over that bridge - not only is it so high up but the traffic is crazy
1923 : Let's build a bridge 2023 : I identify as a bridge
I've driven over it without thinking it was very exciting or scary
The southern Chesapeake Bay Bridge ( the one with the tunnel near Norfolk) is definitely the scary of the two Chesapeake Bay Bridges. While the northern bridge is higher the length and tunnel in the southern one can be uncomfortable for those who don’t enjoy bridges.
Ever been to the Florida keys?
The bridge he probably meant to refer to is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel which connects Virginia Beach to Accomack county Eastern shore Virginia. The entire bridge is 17.6 miles long, with two under ocean tunnels. There are places to pull off, such as a restaurant, gift shop, and fishing pier.
Used to live about a block from that bridge, always drove over it, never seen it as scarier than any others. One that always gave me an uneasy feeling was the bridge in San Diego, the Coronado bridge, it's real steep.
I've only taken this bridge once, but what's even crazier is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel from the Eastern Short to Hampton Roads. Side story, when I last crossed that Bridge-Tunnel, I saw a US Navy submarine passing through.
Immediately thought Chesapeake Bay, driving through there in a storm is a different experience 😂
I’m from Maryland and drove across this bridge a lot. What makes it scary is you can look to the side and all you see is the water which looks like a 200 ft drop. The sides of the bridge are small so you see everything over the edge. Once you learn not to look down it’s not as scary after that.
There's a stupid long 24 mi bridge that crosses Lake Ponchartrain coming out of Nola. It's the longest continuous bridge over water in the world.
It's crazy. The causeway even terminates at interstate 10 right in the middle of the lake. It doesn't feel very sketchy cause it's practically on the water, but you look out there and see all the houses underwater and shit or a monster alligator just waiting to rip your legs off and it gets weird.
Yep I remember as a new driver I was petrified of that bridge. But then I walked over it.
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel between Norfolk Virginia and the DelMarVa peninsula is much much longer and narrower. Another personal favorite was the Huey P. Long bridge in Baton Rouge, LA. It was two lanes each direction with a rail line in between. It was nicknamed the Huey P. Narrow by the locals.
The scariest part of the CBBT is not the bridge but the tunnel. While the sheer length of the bridge can trigger vertigo, the tunnels are single lane each way and you have trucks passing close to you going the other way while you are underwater.
Oh, I crossed this bridge all the time as a kid. I did get a bit freaked out back then, but I never knew it caused that much anxiety in people. You'd think just putting up higher guard rails or something could help, but yeah, the more you know.
Honestly, I'd love to have someone driving the car just so I can look around. I've been on a few bridges off the Texas coast and every time I just want to look at everything outside my window (so lots of water and birds) but have to remember to look forward and pay attention to the road.
Also the Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel, linking the Virginia Beach area to Virginia’s eastern shore, used to be the longest in the world
I think its scary haha it gets so windy sometimes.
I HATE driving over long bridges or really high ones. I have a huge fear of getting hit by someone, flying off the side of the bridge & crashing into the water. Then I can't get my seat belt off in time, & I end up drowning. It's like a reoccurring nightmare I have.
I think what makes bridges scary is intrusive thoughts 💀
Sunshine Skyway bridge is scary for some
you fail to mention that one side of the bridge turns into two way traffic without a barrier during peak traffic times.
That bridge is VERY scary.
The Louisana Bridges coming out of New Orleans get packed out during Hurricane evacuations. Both sides head the same direction for everyone to leave faster. It’s called ContraFlow. The big I-10 bridge over the Mississippi River in Baton Rouge sways under the load of traffic EVERY afternoon when it backs up and gridlocks… usually only on the Eastbound side. They went to all this trouble to change where it splits to I-110 after the bridge and only made it worse… Et Cetera.
Should look up Confederation Bridge, it connects Prince Edward Island to mainland Canada. It was built in 1997, and as far as I know it is the longest bridge over frozen waters in the world, measuring in at almost 13 km.
“I was doing a story for vox” sounds a little better than “when I worked at vox I did my job” 😂
I am TERRIFIED of long bridges! Years ago in central America after Hurrican Mitch one of the bridged had washed out and I didn't know it. Driving along at night, in heavy fog across that bridge and suddenly in front of me the rest of the bridge was GONE. I didn't go over the edge because I wasn't driving fast. I hate hate HATE bridges now. Not simply driving across but even being on one.
I'm from this area, and not only that, but we have the HRBT (Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel) that people are terrified to drive in.
S an Australian the weirdest bit is not seeing any anti jumping bits, especially when you see people flying in their cars.
America's scariest bridges in Oregon. There's a bridge near Portland that is so steep and long that I literally feel like I'm traveling on a panic attack inducing roller coaster in one particular direction.
I'm afraid to drive on bridge, I need to call someone else to do it for me. What the hell, that can't be real. 😂
i used to ride across that bridge as a child… once during a thunderstorm. Terrifying.
I love the bay bridge. I had to commute over it twice daily for a long time. When they open the “suicide” lane for eastbound travelers on the westbound bridge, I ALWAYS picked that lane. No traffic lol
Mackinac bridge in Michigan has the same kind of service! But that one moves while you're driving on it
That’s awesome that you live in Maryland so it’s trippy finding out there content creators I really like her closer than I imagined
he lives in D.C. but as a fellow marylander, it's pretty neat to hear about a local icon from a big youtuber
I drove across the Chesapeake once in the middle of the night when it was the densest fog so you couldn’t see the car in front of you until you were 10 ft away. Scariest experience of my life!
I'm afraid of all bridges, I'm originally from NYC and all the bridges creep me out worse when I'm on the train. I'm in Florida now and the sunshine skyway bridge creeps me out for a lot of reasons
Mackinac Bridge has the same service.
I remember crossing that bridge all the time when we would go on family vacations to ocean city and my dad would always fake driving off the edge
The Golden Gate Bridge was pretty scary when I visited SF, I went over it on a rental bike and it was windy as hell
Love the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel!
you should check out the Causesay Bridge over Lake Pontchartrain near New Orleans. it's almost 24 miles long & IA the longest continuous bridge over water. It was severely damaged in Katrina and rebuilt.
What people don’t understand about that bridge is that it’s sooo low to the bay it almost like one wrong move and you’d be off in the bay. The sad part is that happened before too
The Florida Keys have a couple. We only crossed the small one because fuck that shit.
I vaguely recall that Norway was trying build a massive off-shore highway along a rugged section of coastline to connect up a number of isolated communities.
The people needing that service would *really* struggle here in Norway...
Just wait until we tell them about the idea of New New York…
Was about to say, the GWB or the original tappan zee, or Verrazano narrows. How about the Lincoln or holland tunnels, those ain’t sketch at all
I live right outside the bridge, the only thing actually scary about this is the summer time traffic 😵💫
You’re not allowed to drive certain lightweight cars on Mackinac bridge in Michigan because how windy it gets, and the bridge will close frequently during winter due to winter weather.
As a child, we went to Ocean City every summer. We had to go over the bay bridge and it terrified me! I would duck down in the back seat and hide until we were over it
Check out the sunshine sky way bridge in Saint Pete Florida, that one’s scary!
Hey I grew up on Kent island, cool that the bridge got a shout out! True story, once I was stuck on top of the bay bridge due to a serious accident up ahead, and we were there so long that several people and I got out on top and were just hanging out. I even had my chessboard, and played with a stranger in the middle of the bay!
The Coronado Island Bridge in Southern California is a freaky bridge to drive too.
I've driven a jacked up ford excursion on 35's towing a 20' car trailer and a 1987 crew cab dually with a 3000 lb sailboat over this bridge. The Chesapeake bridge tunnel in Virginia is just as scary
The Mackinaw Bridge my guy
I had to drive over it in a bad snow storm. 1 lane half plowed doing 20 while a giant plow truck is next to me. Can barely see anything let alone pass the sides that was a little scary
Fremont Bridge in Seattle is a little scary, but I am sure it is nothing like this one. The Fremont bridge is very narrow with four lanes, and the oncoming lane is not separated.
The key west 7mile bridge: loud sigh
The bridge that scares me to death is actually in Deleware. Literally just jersey barriers the whole way. I actually would go into PA just to avoid using that bridge.
Further down the bay, we’ve got the bridge-tunnel complexes that people do the same thing
I honestly would probably need someone to drive me over the first time
The Big Mac (Mackinac Bridge) between the Michigan peninsulas and serves as the border between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron needs a place on the list. It may not be miles long, but it does sway in the wind and is subject severe winter events. This is the bridge off of which a Yugo was blown into the frigid waters below. They also have a driver service and I know many persons who refuse to drive across it regardless of the weather.
Also the Coronado bridge in San Diego. Scary as hell
Have you been to Chincoteague and Assateague Island? It’s a charming vacation area near the Chesapeake Bridge. They have “wild” horses there!
Yes charming place.
I feel so validated. My whole life I thought I was the only one totally stricken with terror by this bridge.
Some folks are scared of bridges.
Vincent Thomas Bridge in South Bay, CA....terrifying!
There a bridge in the Gulf from the mainland to an island, where you had to drive almost straight and then straight down again. At the top you could no longer see anything in front of you, except sky and clouds. Freaky.... Also, ran into a one way board planks and rope bridge in Florida. As I was in a min icar, I risked crossing and made it safely. I've driven the Chesapeake Bridge several times. The freaky thing is, you keep thinking you've driven at least ten miles but no land yet, and you feel like you're in an episode of the "Twilight Zone."
I've driven over it alot while living in Virginia, I think most people get scared because of the stories of people getting blown off and the weather around the area
I have an intense fear of driving over bridges and drove over this one by accident. I had NO idea it was like that. JFC it's not even right LOL Never again! I was like girl, if you don;t get it together, you are literally going to die LOL THere are like NO sides! It's crazy!
