That is horrible! I am sorry for your situation. I have been living in Europe as a military spouse and everyone here is able to retire and enjoy life. Food is super cheap, clean and healthy. It is sad how the US helped liberate Europe during WW2 and Americas are suffering so much. I wish we had the programs they have in the EU in the US.

People are getting roommates, living with parents, living in rv's ect. I live in a 3 bedroom house and have 4 roommates. We have a big living room so we sectioned it off and two people live in my living room, and 3 in the 3 bedrooms. It's not ideal but we're tired of being broke. We're all saving to buy a property in the next year or so and going to build tiny houses. Sick of this economy.

My dad gave my grandmother's house to my brother after she died. When dad died, he left his house to my sisters. While he was alive, I purchased my own house and paid a monthly mortgage payment on it for 20 years at 5.5%. The people that "work for it" usually get the short end of the stick.

We have 1 apartment available here in my home town in Michigan, they ask for a $300 application fee. So if 100 people apply, that's $30,000 dollars. How do we know there is even a apartment available? They are making bank on these application fee's. What happened to a $25 app fee?

There are lots of foreign buyers buying houses in cash. In South Florida that has always been a thing and that is one of the reasons real estate is so expensive here. Canada just passed a law to stop this because foreign buyers caused housing prices, and their taxes, to explode and made Canada very expensive. This is one thing we need to do in the US, and not hiding a foreign buyer under a corporation's name through a law firm either, which I know for a fact happens a lot in South Florida.
It's hard to do that here in the US. Same thing as in Belize. Foreign nationals can buy all the property which prices out locals

The elephant in the room - the apartment - is illegal immigration. I live in an apartment complex with 100 2 and 3-bedroom units 4 miles from the beach in SoCal. Rent w water, sewer and trash for a 2-bedroom is $2500, and that's low and I'm the minority here but don't care and don't want to pay $1000 more to live with my kind. The elephant in the room is that whereas I rent a 2-bedroom myself and live here alone making 6 figures, the vast majority of my neighbors are immigrants from Mexico who share bedrooms and live 4-5 working adults per unit. That's how they afford the rent. The investor owners are not on-site and could not care less as long as they collect the rent. I see only one other person such as myself who lives alone. There are so many extra people in this complex that a restaurant across the street rents parking spaces for tenants. (I was born in this city and have lived in this apt for 8 years.)
So cal here too. Sad how this is happening and the ones with children are getting aid, too.
This is extremely bad on single income families. From couples wanting to utilize bedroom as office spaces and then the bunking up roommates, it takes so many 3-4 bedroom units away from the families with multiple children. Out of the group of 8 apartments in my building of 3 bedroom ones, myself and 1 other family are people with children. Six of the other ones in just our building are multiple adults rooming together instead. One neighbor is by himself in a 3 bedroom bc roommate left him and so he uses 1 room as workout room and then other room is empty..... It was very hard finding a 3 bedroom when moved here bc of the work from home at the time and everyone was using extra bedrooms for office space

single guy here in Honolulu. 85% of my pay goes to just rent for a one bedroom apartment. No way in hell i can ever save a penny for my future. a gallon of milk here is $10 and parking your car for work is also another $250 a month. No subletting no pets and some landlords say no sleepovers.

It is easy to see how the homeless situation in Hawaii has grown almost out of control. So sad what is happening to such a beautiful place. I lived there 12 years and left in 1995. I was nearing retirement age and knew I could never make it there once I was on retirement income. Loved the place, but knew I had to get out while the getting was good.
What's so appealing about Florida? I grew up there and couldn't wait to leave. It's crowded, insurance is high and worst of all, it's too freaking hot.
I tried it, only lasted five months in Jacksonville. Hated the place.

All fiat currencies around the world are controlled by the same globalist banking cartel and they were all inflated at the same time and almost at the same rate. This prevents wealth from jumping from one to another. The money supply doubled in the last 5 years which is the primary cause of monetary inflation. This led to the price inflation we're seeing. Everything would be fine if wage inflation kept up with price inflation but I don't know anyone who got a 100% raise. This is the root of the problem and to have ignorant people try to obfuscate is exactly why the banking cartel gets away with it and the people don't riot. I don't know who is worse, the bankers or the morons protecting them.

Go to your nearest parking lot and just take a glance at the tires on all of the cars in the parking lot you would be hard-pressed to find more than five cars with new or good tread tires. Everybody is maxed out and cannot even afford to maintain their cars. I often hear squeaking brakes even on luxury vehicles like BMW, Land Rover, Mercedes.
That's because of cheap as possible brake jobs.
Costco has the best deals on tires. We just put new ones on his F250 . Now my 4 Runner needs its dry rot tires replaced. Putting off vehicle safety measures is a sad state of affairs. In Florida, most of your money goes to home insurance.🤧

@kurtrussell5228 Exactly, over $1,000 is a big investment now out of a person's savings. You always feel ripped off by a tire salesperson. My car has 108,000 miles and is paid off. I plan on keeping it for the next 5 years. It has Michelins on it, and that's what I want to replace them with. So we joined Costco just for the discount on new tires.

I am lucky. I recently paid off my townhome in Cape Canaveral (stuck with a $400 HOA/originally $250 per month). I have both vehicles paid off. I make 6 figures as a married man with one child and I am the only earner in the family. We have all of these things going for our family financially, yet we are still watching our wallet. The majority of my paycheck goes towards insurance (health insurance is insane now) and taxes (federal, property, and sales taxes). Every grocery visit to the store is $300 (Walmart prices/not Publix). My utility bills over the last 11 years have gone up by 40%. We are not struggling, but we are not thriving on a salary that used to be the American Dream! We dreamed of selling our townhome to buy a house in Merritt Island. The prices have skyrocketed so much (due to inflation multiplying property taxes, insurance, and loan rates) that we have been priced out of our dream home market. We are looking further inland in Florida for more affordable housing. Wow how times have changed!

I am not going back into debt $300k to pay off another mortgage period! We are just gonna move inland and find a more affordable location. My mother told me that before I was born (1976) she and my father worked at the same company (insurance company in CT) and they would splurge every payday on a bag of peanut m&m’s to share. When I told an older couple I was a stay at home mom they chimed in wasn't I lucky, well no money for new coat or boots for me (I'm in Québec) and they said when they bought their first home all they had was outdoor patio furniture that it was all they could afford... This housing crisis has been going on for the last 20 years. That's when people started converting minivans and cars into living quarters. Of course people have pride and they're not going to say I'm homeless.. they're going to say I decided not to pay an exorbitant rent and live in my car or my minivan or pick up cheap van and turn it into a camper. Even the prices of campers is outrageous. People can't get loans for them. It was kind of like a cult and everybody thought how cool. I'll try it for a year and see how it works.. The reality is these people have no homes. They can't live with family because of the way people are now.

Bad loans were made prior to 2007 because the government allowed leverage to give homes to everyone. When they course corrected and tightened the leverage ratios, no money could be loaned until the leverage unwound. Took years. That is why the crash happened. Few loans. Little equity. We do not have the same scenario today. Leverage is acceptable. Equity is high.

Absolutely true about wealthier parents giving money to their kids to buy property. I'm an accountant for a small CPA firm in Houston, and this year so far we had at least 3 baby boomer clients giving between $100k-$300k each to their kids to buy a house.

My first house was $23,000 in 2003. It was next to a rail yard and needed work which I knew how to do. Sold it for $42,000. Bought another house for $123,000 in a better neighborhood but again, needed work. Sold it for $193,000 And bought one for $185,000, again, needed work. Sold it for $324,000 and bought, hopefully, my last house for $550,000. I’ve never owned a car newer than 10 years old, have a ton of side hustles and every purchase is scrutinized. I don’t want to rip on younger generations but I just don’t see the sacrifices that used to be made to get to the point where you’re comfortable. You don’t need $6 coffee, $1000 phones and for Christ’s sake why would you lease a car for $600/month?

People like living in nice, safe, aesthetically nice areas. I lived in a rail yard, you ever been to one? Crime is higher, it’s loud and dirty but it was mine plus it was in a rough part of town but I can take care of myself. Second is condition. There was a time where men knew how to frame, drywall and mud a wall. How to do basic plumbing and electrical, Fixing a roof and foundation were skills that men learned before they even bought a house. My rail yard house was a dump but 3 months of 12 hours days and it was more than livable and in fact quite cozy but nobody seems to want to learn those skills anymore. Funny how my great grandfather could live in a sod house that he built in freezing North Dakota but modern man wont consider a place that doesn’t have a Starbucks a block away. As a society we got soft and stupid.

I'm a Boomer. No one gave us homes and very few got down payments from our parents. I had to wait until I was past 50 to buy my first home and I was a professionally trained health practitioner. All through the last part of the 20th century, we had recessions every five to seven years. The situation with crime because bad enough in California by 1994 that a gang ransacked my office after I stopped a gang beatdown of a girl in my off-street parking lot. I ended up going bankrupt. The times have never been easy for anyone. Only a small percentage have smooth going. it's always been like that.

I'm a boomer, too. My first home purchase was a townhouse in the 80s. The interest rate on my mortgage was 14.75%. I always worked full-time-plus, lived very frugally, and saved and invested aggressively and consistently. I never earned a high salary or worked for a company that offered a pension or 401(k). I bought used cars that I kept for many years, purchased used items instead of new ones, and didn't take vacations. I was bemused by those around me who spent freely and splurged frequently instead of saving and investing. I'm now 66 and retired with zero debt and a net worth of $13.5+ million (in brokerage accounts and debt-free rental properties). It can be done, but one has to start very early and make a lot of sacrifices throughout the decades.

I had some family from out of state come and visit this week. They went down to Miami , and had their plates stolen off their car at the hotel they were staying at. I told my friends and family, and everyone was guessing why someone would do that. And they all either said it was because they were going to do some bad stuff, OR they were trying to save money on plates and tags . Like really ?? My guess was the person was trying to keep their car from being repo'd. Talk about desperate times .

I live in Ohio and many years ago when my elderly Dad was still alive, he was selling one of his cars. Two guys came to his house and presented cash. He took the money and told them to wait outside while he got a screw driver to remove his license plates. He returned outside and they left with the car. A couple hours later the police came to my Dad’s home to question him, as the car was abandoned after it was seen leaving the scene of a bank robbery. He called me so upset, but thankfully they didn’t harm him or just take the car without paying him or take him with them.

Lived in South beach 20 years ago. Rent was $400 on Meridian. Got lucky and rented from an owner of the building. Dream is to return after my father passes. Indeed, a dream. My plan was to buy a place. Watched as places went from $89k to $250-340K Sigh.

@@colettespencer3357 I bought with 3 percent down 6 years ago. Had I waited for 20 percent, I wouldn't own my home. The value of my home has doubled in 6 years. The lesson is that if you can buy something with less than 20 percent down, it's worth considering.
Those prices still seam cheap compared to San Francisco prices and I'm sure south beach is nicer.

I think there are plenty of parents helping their kids financially with help to just pay the monthly bills. Saving for a down payment for a home is just too much for many. And if a young person is able to get a down payment, this doesn’t mean the monthly bills will go down. Many parents will be helping their kids for decades.
So 20,000 people will have to pay a no-doubt nonrefundable deposit, and these are the poor we're talking about, even though that means about 200 application fees for every one of those units get captured by the management group. Someone is going to make bank on this. And the kickbacks will fly too.

Hard to save for a house when you make $20.00 an hour and your rent is $1600 plus all of your other monthly expenses{ gas, electric, phone, healthcare, car ins} which have all gone up then houses start at $300,000. It is not the same as years ago. I feel very sorry for young people today

I wouldn’t assume that cash purchasers are well-off. They’ve just sold their primary home to transfer to another state and buy another primary home. A 1031 exchange is more likely

I believe a lot of cash home purchases are coming from foreigners. They are well to do in their home countries. Sometimes a couple of families go in on it. They have tourist visas and stay up to 6 months then another family takes over the dwelling, sometimes even subrenting. This happens especially near Disney.
I’ve been homeless in California for 5 years and I still think it beat’s paying rent prices out here.
Last 4 years the smokies of western NC has become Te new Florida. They sold their home n came here n paid cash. Ruining it for people like me, a widow who lives on fixed income, basic old home. Taxes and insurances always going up up up. Can’t find help to come work on house. Plumber is 4- weeks. Yard work is $125 for 45 minutes. $300/2 hr (fall )is what I pay, depending on what I need. Im being priced out. Traffic is congested, just not the mountains anymore. Then we still have the tourists on top of all the full time new growth.
They go from NYC to Fla, then NC. Next stop, Ohio.

I can identify. I live in Florida, and since I bought a condo, 5 years ago, I have seen a big change in the area. More Northerners, and Californians have come to Florida, therefore, everything has gone up. A lot more traffic, and many rude drivers, and rude people. Florida has lost its sparkle. If you hear of any areas that have reasonable cost of housing, and pleasant people, do not tell anyone, or there will be an influx of people. I might move in a few years, and I won't tell people where I might go to.
I feel you. I’m in SW Florida in what used to be a quiet little beach town. Tens of thousands of homes have been built. You can’t get a parking spot at the beach anymore. My house value doubled in three years. Everything I own is paid off, but it isn’t cheap to live here. Food, clothes, services, etc. I do construction and small engine repair so I know my house inside and out, but if you’re not handy or at least know if you’re getting ripped off, your $100 broken AC fan blade is going to cost you $7,000 when they talk you into a brand new system. That applies to EVERYTHING. I’m now seeing people originally from NY or CA who are now moving to TN or NC or GA. People across the street just moved back to TN. My entire town is covered in for sale signs.

It’s too complicated because you have to have a dock somewhere with ground transportation parked. But definitely safe and quiet. Best solution is a van parked at night on a Walmart lot. There’s internet & 24 hour security, You have food and bathrooms close and the van has just enough internal space for comfort & can take you anywhere.
There are a lot of people that are house rich but cash poor. Many of my friends are like that. If they sold their home and moved to a less expensive place than they could pay cash for the home and afford to retire but most of them would rather stay around because of family and friends.
Or, their children don't want to leave their friends, and the school they go to.

Companies are building luxury rentals in a service economy. They are making homes for a market that doesnt exist.
I've tried renting twice and the tenants never could make their rent payment, nor did they take care of the place.

Don’t rent to anybody with credit score below 600. Verify employment. 3.) Require tenant to carry renters insurance. 4.) Take pics of the rental before tenants move in. 5.) Put a flat rate cleaning fee into the lease agreement to be taken from deposit. Best of luck!

The Ivy league school I attended in the mid-70s cost about $10K/yr, including room, board and books. Nowadays ho-hum colleges cost $60K or more.
If you're wondering where these folks might go, here's an idea: they could head to Mexico and sneak into the US like many others do. Then, once they're sorted out, they might end up in New York or other blue States. Once there, they could get put up in nice hotels with free tablets, phones, and money on cards to spend.

there's new federal regulations that severely limit the fees banks can charge for overdrafts, returned checks, late payments, etc. So they have to make it up somehow.

I live in the DC Baltimore metro area and my mortgage is only a couple hundred more than those you mentioned. I have a good rate cuz we bought in 2017. I'm unemployed and not finding work and the assistance I get isn't nearly enough to bridge the gap without greater sacrifices like no health insurance. This is all going to get crazy bad in the next year. What I don't get is why so much new construction is not for lesser income, not even defined low income, just relatively affordable. They jeep building higher end units with the industry standard cheap pre fab BS building delivered on flatbed and slapped together by cheap migrant laborers and illegal aliens who are doing better than my family....wtf And The majority of those cash buyers are more likely corporate entities than individuals.

April 2024. I am in Austin Tx. Apartments have really come down.. A lot of Avaiable apartments. Seriously. Willow book $1005 one bedroom. 5 star rating.. Stony Brook One bedroom $996. A lot of complexes are giving move in specials. You said the other day on a video that Austin had 14% available apartments above the national average. You were right..
I live in a non-HOA neighborhood in south San Diego, CA. I have noticed more people are renting out of bedrooms and garages now. What used to be empty public side streets are now filled with cars and work trucks. Overflowed parking from condos and apartments leaking into neighborhoods as people try to mitigate the expensive housing costs with unconventional means.

the system needs to break so the problem is obvious. there is no excuse for so many working people to be struggling for basic low income housing. Something has to give.

The expenses of boat ownership is extremely high. Tru you can go a long time in coast mode, but then baam, you have a bill of thousands to keep it afloat. Boats need constant maintenance.
But the maintenance costs are a big. I know a few people who own boats and it's costly.
