Dr. Rania Awaad gives spiritual insights into the amazing friendship between the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) when, after narrowly escaping an assassination attempt on the Prophet’s life, the men fled Mecca on a dangerous trek to Medina to build a new society.
As Quraish tribe mercenary horsemen and soldiers of fortune pressed in, the friends took refuge for three days inside a cave on the outskirts of Mecca.
Before entering the cave, Abu Bakar (RA) went in alone. He saw snake pits in the cave and he placed a cloth over each hole to protect the Prophet (peace be upon him).
After the friends entered the cave, God ordered a spider to spin its web at the entrance, which later would beguile Quraishi trackers who believed no one could possibly be in the cave.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) was exhausted from the journey. He placed his blessed head on his friend's lap and he fell asleep.
As he slept, Abu Bakar (RA) realized he had missed a nearby snake pit. To prevent a snake from coming out, Abu Bakar (RA) moved his foot to cover the pit's opening.
A snake inside the hole bite Abu Bakr (RA)'s foot. The pain was intense. Abu Bakr (RA) did not want to disturb his friend's slumber and he stifled the pain.
The Prophet was soon awakened by tears of anguish rolling off the face of his friend.
Muhammad (PBUH) consoled his friend. He rubbed his blessed saliva on the spot that the snake had bitten. His friend's pain was instantly relieved.
For the next three days and three nights, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Abu Bakr (RA) remained in that cave, which would later be called Jabal Thawr to symbolize the power of faith, hope, and friendship witnessed in that cave.
