In Germany 🇩🇪 a shooting brake is a wagon In America 🇺🇸 a shooting break is when you reload your guns
Haha good one
You're German, I wouldn't make jokes implying there are human rights issues in our country. As you are aware we clap back hard.
In America, a "shooting brake" is a 2 door wagon...
Nicholas Fitzpatrick who are you talking to, Phyllis?
In the UK 🇬🇧 a proper shooting brake has guns and dogs riding in the back.
“RS” is race start, also known as launch mode or control in other vehicles. You activate it by having the traction control in sport handling, steering wheel straight, hold the brake hard confirm “race start” by upshift on paddle, floor the acceleration pedal until desired rpm, release the brake and hold on for your life.
No bro its(you could have RS mode but its not there) 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I’m guessing it’s not and he threw plates from another car on it or he got some diplomatic exemption..
Since Doug doesn't address the obvious question, I'd agree with Colin's plate swap theory for now. If it was diplomatic loop-hole, I'd expect Doug to state that and plates would be specific - not CA custom plates. Also, this car doesn't fall under the "show and display" law of special exempt cars. THHIIISS is the CLS-background story, which I was told by a Mercedes designer years ago and I would like to share with you all: The first generation of the CLS was so unusual, unique and beautiful, that the board of Mercedes Benz decided to produce this car like it was "painted" by the designers. There are many different requirements to every new model of a car manufacturer, like how much luggage must fit into a trunk, how much space has to be between the head and the headliner etc. . The board members knew well about this requirements, but they didn't care. The design was important. THHIIIS is why the first and second generation of the CLS has this beautiful design.
... and didn't sell that well. Because when you pay for a station wagon but essentially get the practicality of a sedan... its not what most customers want. IMO its the perfect wagon, not THAT much space but design and look is on point.
I love when engineers and designers overrule finance and sales people at Mercedes. That gives the world some of the most interesting and iconic vehicles. Sadly, very sadly they become an interesting story in history. As such the current generation might be the last CLS to make room for more EVs. I hope they can design again on a clean sheet of paper with the drivetrain taking less space, I hope they will look as good as the CLS did when it debuted.
Just like the Alfa 156 sportwagon.
This is why the 1st gen is the best looking cls.
There's a hell of a lot of the Ford AU Falcon in the design too............. unfortunately.
Rear diffuser Doug.... The splitter is found on the front of a car...

The rs mode means race start mode which is launch control and you need to be in sport traction to enable it
You also need to be in sport plus mode beforehand, plus the car was in PARK.
@@backroad_e9x technically you need a few things: 1. Engine oil temp at 179F 2. Sport+/Manual mode engaged 3. Suspension in level 2 4. Traction in Sport handling 5. Car in drive 6. In the land of the wagon/hatchback (Sweden) these are as common as the cls sedan maybe even more common, my neighbours has one (a shooting break cls 330 d) so I’m not surprised when I see one. Always fun to see a quirky rather then just an expensive car.

I was just hoping this one would be fitted with the optional teak wood decking in the boot, just so Doug can laugh at it for being inherently quirky.
I was too! By far the coolest option you could get on the Shooting Brake. How much did it cost back then?
@@jannissfr I have no idea but it was quite a pricey option.
The CLS shooting brake is actually very common in europe, I see it quite alot and on the used market it’s cheaper than the normal CLS 2nd Gen.
I saw one of those in a Mercedes store here in Brasil back in 2014. Asked for the key, and gave it a little gas just to hear the exhaust note... but didn’t drove it. Amazing car with an amazing presence!

The issue would be having the car serviced.
@@Andrew-zv4fm I don't think it would be too much of a problem getting it serviced tbh. Unless something goes catastrophically wrong with the rear hatch area, it's pretty much all CLS. I'm paraplegic, love wagons, have a weakness for pearlescant cars... that thing is perfect. I love it, and I too will now "lust after it"! Super cool, Thank you for introducing me to it! I have full intention on owning one!
Doug, great review. I have a CLS SHooting Brake, but it’s a diesel version. 2 little points of interest. The first thing is, this car was sold with run flat tyres and a TPS system. It also had a tyrefit, gel system or it could be ordered with a 19in space saver spare wheel. The second thing is, that’s really nice is when you pull the release for the rear seats folding, the rear headrests drop down into their lowest position AND the front seats will move forward electrically to allow the back rests to fold down. The E Class does this too. I forgot something else. The rear window has a magnetic (and release button) “parcel shelf’ which you can remove to allow you to pack up to the window/ceiling. The end of the stowage cover is articulated. This is what fits under the “parcel shelf”. Other nice touches, which you mentioned, like the gas struts on the underfloor stowage, which is secured by a latch, and a vertical net separator for the load compartment to the rear passengers. When you pull the chrome handle the latch disengages. There’s also stowage on the left rear wheel arch, which is where I keep my tyrefit kit, windscreen frost cover, a set of reflective vests and the cargo net. The underfloor space is enormous. I keep two aluminium camping chairs and the obligatory Mercedes umbrella under there. When we go food shopping, I can fit 3 large shopping bags under the floor WITHOUT taking the chairs and umbrella out. My car doesn’t have the Bang and Olufsen sub woofer, so there’s tons more space. I’m not getting rid of mine ever (or until the UK government bans diesels in 2030) as I love the styling, the comfort and the practicality.
Does your CLS have double laminated glasses?
@@mortensenvick5711 Unfortunately, it doesn’t have double glazed windows. I’m not sure this was available, though it may well be on the AMG CLS 63.
@@albertol1529 Thanks, or maybe they decided to get only on the E-class
@@mortensenvick5711 I’m in the UK, and European (and other market) specs are always different. We don’t get anywhere near the option choices that they have in Europe due to being right hand drive. I think there’s only a few markets left that drive on the right: India, Cyprus, Japan are the ones that come to mind. I think it’s the production cost and pricing strategies that impact what we get in the UK. For example, massage seats and ventilated seats were only available in the E-Class AMG E63(s) on the previous model.
@@albertol1529 Yeah that's true, also Australia, South Africa and Thailand are rhd markets. Also I remember to read the CLS 63 S is rear wheel drive on these markets, whereas it's awd in the rest of the world. That's pretty interesting actually.
