lump sum is not always the best choice ... most of the time you only get 30 to 40% of the grand total BEFORE taxes (especially federal) are taken out ... yeah, if you still get 100 million instead of 3/4 billion, it's a lot of money but you're also wasting a lot of the annuity ... and an annuity , while not sexy, will keep you having an ongoing income stream for 20 to 30 years, even into a family trust, in case something happens to you ... guys taking the lump sum are more tempted to spend too much and waste it ... ask your financial advisor if you can make more money with the lump sum now, or take it in smaller increments over the next 30 years and still invest the portions along the way. Might be much smarter to do.

I was looking for this comment! One thing he didn’t mention that I will do is tithe. Then all others in order with paying my home in full as the first major debt I pay. I only have it and a small balance on my credit card. Both of them will get wiped out immediately!

When I finally receive my lottery check, I already plan on hiring tax attorneys and financial planners ( respectable). Staying anonymous. Retiring because of my age ( over 50). Taking the lump sum because of my age. Setting up a foundation and getting paid from the foundation or blind trust. God bless

Great tips. I've mostly thought of something similar when I win it this week. I won't throw a big party. I'll have a party for one, with two bottles of champagne. Then nextweek I'm house shopping and saying goodbye to renting. I already know the area of my house choice. I will spend most of the time at my house while I decide on how to invest and keep my money. I really look forward to this!

Not only do you need to stay anonymous, but even deny having won anything. Trust me, people will forget about you after a few weeks as long you don't draw attention.

Honestly, you are only in the spotlight for a few weeks at best, which is why you live a normal lifestyle for a while before upgrading anything (house, car, fashion, ect). Also it all depends on the winnings and I'm speaking about folks who won $2,000,000 and less. Jackpot winners will move differently but I know one Florida family that got their winnings ($170MM I think) placed in a Trust account.
@@brittneypine6628 if you can't remain anonymous, have a lawyer or fiduciary collect the check for the media hoopla to collect your prize. They would take a one time payday to do that. Or show up with a mask or disguise. I've seen ppl do it.

My dad and I have always suggested finding a bank with a good interest rate, putting your winnings away, and living off the interest
I would take the time to establish residency in a state that participates in the lottery and allows you to remain anonymous and has no state income tax. Also get with a fiduciary to establish a LLC, and then pay yourself yearly income. Buy a house in an area where your closest neighbor is measured in how many miles away they live to you. I suggest 10-15 thousands acres, trees and with the house in the middle. Low profile is now the name of the game. Security is now a constant necessity, especially if you have close family that you don’t want kidnapped. I would learn who provides security to people like Trump, or any of those type of people. Consider a state where you can ccw with no issues, i would stay away from the east and west coasts population centers. Sure you can visit, i just would not live there. Own vehicles that blend into the surroundings. Find a charity that you like and make their day.

I'm going to max my 401 k and IRA so that I can guarantee I'd be able to live on my retirement and not touch it till I'm 65. Maybe a little more into my life insurance just in case. The rest I would invest. But as a whole I don't think my life would change too much. Just pay off me and my mom's debts.
Paying off debts is #2 on my list. #1 keep my mouth shut. #3 passive income investments. While I sleep I am making money 24hrs a day. #4 Retirement. Sure I would have a moderate vehicle of my choice. But big homes and boats and crap, I don't need it. Minimalist is the best way to live.
I would increase my liability insurance, maybe even get a personal umbrella policy. Just in case someone tried to sue me in order to get at the money.

Can not find a place to post what I would do if I won the lottery... NO where, but if I won the lottery. I'd get health insurance, I have none, I have pain I'd love to get fixed. I'd get my own home. I'd occasionally donate a little to places that need it. I'd live a comfortable life. I have been playing the lottery since I was 18 in 1983 most I have won was 250.00 usually nothing or maybe 1 dollar, 2 dollars occasionally 7. Wish me luck out there. I have worked most of my life, hoping to win a lottery to spend what life I have comfortable.
Take the lump sum. After getting all my ducts in a row a world cruise so that I will have time to reflect. Then after I figure out what it is that I want to do I would do it. As far as spending for a house or car I would buy a simple low key place in a good neighborhood. A Lexus car because I want something reliable but understated. of course that will come from the interest of the principal that I invested. Invest invest invest!!!
In England we don't have a choice on how we get paid. If you win you get the entire Jackpot (or a share if multiple winners) tax free as a lump sum.
