  • I've shot with Canon for years and currently shoot with a 77D. I tried the R5 for 30 minutes back in the summer during Canon's Road Trip event and I loved it. They way it felt in my hands, the look of the photos that I took, and how intuitive the menu system felt.

  • I have used my old 24-70 2.8 EF and 70-200 EF adapted on my R5 and I have eye af and it has snappy autofocus. Canon made it a point to make adapted EF lenses work amazingly well on the mirrorless system. It made the transition really easy. But they also need to allow 3rd party lenses that would make canon dominate. The wide angle wobble is gone via firmware. I had it on wide angle lens and now it’s gone after updating my firmware.

  • Been looking at your work for years, and overall, I think you'd be able to take any camera and make amazing results. Thanks for taking the time to share your techniques; My professional work is within CGI modeling and texturing, but as a hobby I take nature photos, so it really helps to have a pro out there that shares their thoughts. I need more depth of field in my work (photogrammetry), so micro four thirds is an obvious choice...if you ever get the chance, I'd love to see you do a session with an OM1 or GH6 and give your thoughts. As far as I am concerned, as long as your work kicks ass, I don't care if the video's are less scripted. Again, thanks for these!

My first shoot I looked at images on the rear screen and became really excited; looked at the images on the computer and knew I had work to do. With a client in the room, that could make a huge difference. Great video.

I've had my Canon T4i for almost 10 years and I'm ready to make the jump to one of those mirrorless, almost certainly it's gonna be the R7 because of its price, sensor, SD slots and speed. • The ease of use was the biggest thing for me when choosing a camera. I messed around with a couple of my friends' Sony cameras after having used some Canon/Nikon cameras in passing over the years, and just trying to convince the camera to take a picture at the desired settings was such a chore. The camera just getting out of your way in the process of taking a picture is so important given all the other things to worry about.

  • Great vids. I had the R5 and R6 and undoubtedly the best non stacked sensor cameras on the market. The reason why I’m back with Sony and NIkon with the A1, A7RV, Z9 is the lenses and the ability to adapt my light Sony GMs to the z9 via the megadap etz21. Also the full HDMI if I’m using the Atamos. The R5 has some fabulous image quality and was hard to get rid of. Mine froze from time to time shooting images and it burned through battery. After about 4 firmware updates, the R5 didn’t freeze much. But at the same time, I was using the z6ii and 7ii for salsa and with the 50 1.2, It wasn’t easy, but I found it astounding. Now selling all my Z lenses for the lighter GM equivalents (except the 400 4.5 z), I’m finding this a perfect duo. Canon has some great ergonomics and I’m finding the Z9 right up there with it except the d pad. Sony is third, but its functional and gets the job done and I like the use of them with their remotes. The I watch ultra is fabulous btw.

Flagship is out of my budget, but I am happy to hear you talk about it and hear it is working so nicely. Have a blessed week dale

Hope you and your fam had a merry Christmas, all the best for 2023, cheers from Germany

I would love to get a new camera but there's something about performing dance just to get great photos. The autofocus on the 6D can lack sometimes, so I manually focus then let the camera do the rest.

  • Something you did not mention and in my opinion is a plus, is the compatibility with old EF lenses. Is true that by now we don't have Sigma or Tamron RF lenses, but is also true you can buy a sencond hand 24-70 or others EF lenses and is perfectly working with the Canon adapter which is not even expensive. The only thing is missing here in Canon lineup is a Hi Megapixel Stacked sensor sport Camera especially for wildlife photography where we need more megapixel, Like the A1

  • Hi again Manny, I have my Sony A9 Cameras mapped for Still/Video to the 1/2/3 on top dial . Using this way gets over the exposure/shutter speed difference between vid/still that you had, before the newer way of switching from still/video of the A74. This is very similar to your setup on the Canon.

  • Regarding 8:52 and a color science between Canon DSLRs and mirrorless, I have definitely noticed a difference, and not for the better. The color straight out of the 5D Mark II was awesome to me and much better than the R5. Omar Gonzalez talks about this on his channel and compares digital sensors to film stocks. He said the overly magenta image out of the R5 was a dealbreaker for him. I'm not quite there b/c of the amazing RF lenses, but I definitely prefer the color out of the 5d Mark II and III to the R5.

    @AllgoodthingsTv@AllgoodthingsTv Жыл бұрын
    • That sounds more like a tint issue which can be easily corrected!

      @JRidgely@JRidgely Жыл бұрын
    • I sold my Canon R6 for the 5D Mark iii because the colors/files are ugly compared to the 5D Mark III files. When you get lack of the yellowish/greenish tone of the R6 the picture on the 5D has more organic filmic look.

      @tombube49@tombube49 Жыл бұрын
    • @@tombube49 It's unfortunate you had to do that because "if it's not broken, don't fix it" and Canon's color science in the Mark II and III cameras definitely wasn't broken. I almost even preferred my older Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L lens to the RF 28-70mm f/2.0 as well. Hard to put your finger on it exactly, but I just know that I produced better pics and more enjoyed taking pics more with my older Canon rig. Check out the Omar Gonzalez vid "The Canon R5 deal breaker"... I think it sums up the issue nicely.

      @AllgoodthingsTv@AllgoodthingsTv Жыл бұрын
    • @@AllgoodthingsTv "Hard to put your finger on it exactly, but I just know that I produced better pics and more enjoyed taking pics more with my older Canon rig." That sounds very subjective and not very scientific. It sounds more like the color profile OOTB is not quite what it was with the older cameras. Definitely sounds like something that could be adjusted in camera or after the fact.

I'm sure that the other cameras by Nikon and Sony are great machines but I've never felt the need to switch. My R5 is a joy to use and my recent trade up from the R to the R7 has been a good decision especially for wildlife. • Thanks for your thoughts. At about 5:05, the flip screen thing, that's very controversial. R5, R6, R6II, R3 are not intended to be vlogging cameras and the target customers are people being 99% behind that cameras and not in front of it. For vlogging use a GoPro or a dedicated vlogging camera. I'm mainly a wildlife photographer, shooting low, a vari-angle screen such as the Fuji X-T2, -T3, -T5, -H1, -H2, GFX-100S, Nikon Z9 have it would be much more convenient, screen always in lens axis, at both shooting positions, landscape and portrait and not interfering with the left arm and/or left wrist, always prone to break off. To me, that flip screen is always a pain in the but, a design flaw on enthusiasts/pro bodies for vlogging hype. I never ever record a second vlogging with my R3 and R6II. I wished they spent them a vari-angle screen like on the Fuji's.

  • I have an R5 and the F2,8 trinity and several other L lenses. The fact they squashed 3rd party lenses really makes me rethink my choices. I did buy a used A7R4 and a few lenses to "try" to see if i wanted an A1 or A7R5 - however I can't get over the CFE A vs B cards. I would easily spend a ton extra to get the same amount of storage.

  • As an aside, Canon says all their mirrorless autofocus systems are AI trained as well. They just never made it a huge bullet point way back when. I believe Fro pointed this out wondering why Sony was making a big deal about it. I can say with my R7, everything I shoot from birds to jet fighters, the autofocus never lets go and I have thousands of tack sharp images to sort through. It's amazing. Compared to my 7Dmk2 it's night and day, and going into the R7 I wasn't expecting that AT ALL. The color science between the two is about the same, IMO. They both have great vibrant colors, maybe a tad too much green, but today anyone using Lightroom can make their own profile and apply it to every photo as it is.

    @Philtho@Philtho Жыл бұрын
  • I started photography a year ago with Canon and if I were to start again I'd go Sony for one reason, the third party lens issue. The only reason I've gone from M50 to RP to now R6 is that I just love how Canons operate, I've only really held a Sony before and the ergonomics and usability (menu and button layout) is a lot less desirable compared to Canon. I can't imagine how many beginners or low budget photographers Canon could be missing out on. You're totally right with the R7 and R10, they are entry-level cameras with a lack of entry-level/cheap lenses. I'm still a budget lens consumer, buying third party lenses like the Viltrox 85mm 1.8 and I would 100% upgrade to the L lens in the future. That's the beauty of third party lenses, finding what you like and in turn knowing what you'd purchase at a premium price, they're missing out on future continuous consumers that could still with the brand for life. Canon should care about beginners, all of us were there at one point (still am), all of us gain experience, clients and money over the years, money that can afford L lenses!

    @chingymofo1@chingymofo1 Жыл бұрын
    • R&D costs are high. People buy a few bodies but a lot of lenses. Would you put in all the R&D dollars and let your competitor pick up the profitable lenses. Photography is a system. Canon uses the lenses to pay for camera R&D. Third party have no camera costs. In the long run it will stunt innovation.

In order to change from stills to video or choose different shooting modes (eg Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority) on the R5 you have to select Mode, then scroll through the different options and pick what you want. On the R6 MK II, R5C and R7 all you have to do is turn the control dial on the top of the camera and click the dedicated video/ stills switch.

    • @@pauloveza No, I do not regret purchasing the R6 ii. It has been a great camera and as far as video it has 6K oversampled uncropped 4K video at 60 fps so for me that is good enough. Are there better cameras that can be used for video, yes, but I primarily shoot photos and this camera also has UVC/UAC compatibility so it can be used as a web camera or live streaming. To me, the colors are a lot better than Sony. That is one thing I have never really like about Sonys but the new A7RV is a lot better than their previous cameras when it comes to the colors.

  • A very good video. Being an old school Nikon DSLR shooter, D700, D810 and the D4s. Shot film with Minolta and the Nikon F2. I traded all but two Nikon lenses to go ML with the Canon R5. I kept the old reliable Nikon F mount 24-70 and the 80-200. Both F/2.8 I purchased 3 RF lenses. The 24-105mm and the 70-200 both F/4 and went crazy and purchased the 100-500mm which I enjoy very much for almost everything I shoot as a serious hobbyist. I do some, very little indoor event shooting mainly school functions and some indoor rodeos. I have shot HS Senior pictures which I took outside using my Nikon gear before buying the R5. I enjoy pet photography, dogs mainly and of course travel photography. I would like so much to purchase at least one, L, fast, RF lens, maybe two. However I can purchase and replace my Nikon 85, f/1.4, a very good wide angle zoom and at least 2 more primes for the cost of one or two RF lenses. Tough call for me. I do not do video and the R5 is such a super camera but so too is the D810 and the D4s.

  • So, Manny...the reason why the back screen on the R3 just seems to look so good is that it's actually 4.15-million dots, as opposed to 2.1-million dot. The R3 is the closest any camera I have ever owned has come to being totally perfect. With just some software enhancements from the R6 Mark II like false color support and perhaps some more options with drive speed frame rates, it would only stand to enhance what makes the camera so good. It is certainly ergonomic perfection for a full-body camera.

A year ago I moved up to the R5 and now I'm experimenting with video and Davinci resolve. I own the 28/70 F2 L and the 24 - 105 F4 L as well as the 50mm cheapo and the 16mm cheapo as well as some other equipment. (again, not justifiable). I shot a couple of weddings at my church for free. And I take my camera on hikes, vacations and family outings. I have learned a great deal about photography but Im stuck in a rut. There is only so much you can learn from youtube. I mean you can learn a lot, but you cant replace real world experience. Im considering cutting my teeth on real estate photography. Any advice?

    • As a Nikon DSLR user I have to say the general feeling is that, other than the Z9, their cameras have fallen behind the competition, especially in the area of AF. Maybe partly because of shortages, they haven’t released a competitive update to the Z6ii & Z7ii, which are the most camera most people can afford or want to carry around. So there is a ‘wait and see’ feeling. I’m personally hoping for a mini Z9 in a Z8, with a stacked sensor.

  • Manny, thanks a lot for doing these great summary videos. And no - you don't need to prove anything to anyone - you're absolutely right about that one. I just wanted to add a few comments about Canon lenses. I completely agree that we all started back in DSLR era either with the cheapest Canon glass or some Sigma glass. But what most of us ended up using was Canon L glass because it is just so much superior than anything else ever made for Canon - and that's not just the autofocus but also the colors and most importantly the look you get with masterpieces like Canon EF 35mm F/1.4 or Canon EF 85mm F/1.2 (all their iterations). And the other thing that Canon did which impressed me so much (especially after unsuccessfully adapting Canon EF lenses to Sony A7iii) was how flawlessly EF glass works on RF bodies. And this is my theory why Canon doesn't really need any other lens producer to have access to the RF system - the breadth & the quality of those EF lenses is again unparalleled. And you can get L EF glass for cheap today! Even with the Canon RP you get professionally looking shots if you pair it with EF L glass. And lastly, the "analog" look of that old glass is also something we still can enjoy while having autofocus. Glass like CANON 80-200MM F/2.8 L will undoubtedly provide so much joy if you're after a soft and natural looking portraiture photography. Thanks again for giving Canon the credit it deserves.
