Why Is FINLAND So Rich Despite Having Been a Russian Colony?
Russia, has the eleventh largest economy in the world measured by GDP, but in terms of GDP per capita, which is an indicator used to get an idea of the level of development of a country, Russia is at an intermediate level; it is far from the richest countries but it is not among the poorest either. Europe is home to the majority of the world's most developed countries, but there are others that are too poor to be located in this continent and almost all of them are neighbors or are in Russia's sphere of influence. There are only 2 neighbors of Russia that could be qualified with a medium high level of development, which are Estonia and Latvia. And one that could be considered as rich and one of the most developed in the world which is Finland. So there are 3 questions worth trying to answer: Why are almost all of Russia's neighbors poor? Why was Finland able to escape that trend? And why do leftist politicians often mistakenly put Finland as their example to follow?

The reason is that Finland was never a part of Soviet union. Never under communism and never an eastern bloc country. Finland 🇫🇮 is a Nordic country with Sweden 🇸🇪 Norway 🇸🇯 Denmark 🇩🇰 and Iceland 🇮🇸. Finland was directly a part of Sweden over 600 years and later an autonomous grand duchy of Russia's Empire of tsar 100 years. During that time Finland had a government of its own. Swedish retained as an official language. So did Swedish laws. Finland had a post office of its own. Own currency etc.
Finland has never been Russia’s ”colony”
colony definition: a country or area under the full or partial political control of another country. finland was a colony of russia yes.
@@codyyh9421 No it wasn’t. Finland had autonomy and its own laws. Also a local parliament, whereas colonies are not self-governed. It had its own money for example
@@user-qr6ki9di3q "partial political control" if you seriously think russia had 0 political control over the grand duchy then youre extremely stupid.
- Do not twist history. We have never been a colony of Soviet Union or Rusaia and we did not have a tsar but we were short time autonomic country, which had swedish laws, swedish and finnish language, mostly swedish money, own two chamber parlaments, as well as own high emperor.
@@ristoo.toivanen1523 My point 31 years, 20 years and 57 years so I would say we had Markka then when its more than 50% of the time :D
It should be remembered that Finland has been longer part of Nordic countries (first as part of Sweden and then independent) than it has been under russian rule.
Finland isnt a russian colony lol, we always been finnish and been occupied by both sweden first for hundreds of years and then russia afterwards for not that long
Seems the history of Finland and Sweden is lost for many. Depending on where in today's Finland you live you were either part of the country Sweden or a conquered area. Like southwestern Finland was part of Sweden. Like there was no countries up here only "tribes" so it was the old man that sat at the top of the church faar faar away that gave the lands away... It's more complicated and they sure didn't conquer it was the religion that had crusades here and the lands were then given to the king sitting on the other side. Yes this is very rough version but it worked in a different way back then. Like they didn't invade us because we weren't a country, most of Norway, Sweden and Finland wasn't a country back then. Like google this "Swedish tribes in Northern Europe in 814" that map aint 100% correct but explains a lot, then look at this map "Formation of the Swedish Empire, 1560-1660" in Swedish Empire wiki and it explains the rest. Then read about crusades by the church.
Very accurate. There is one fairly big error, though, at 7:39, forest. The forests of Finland have always been private property. In the 1500's, however, the king of Sweden declared that the 'excess' of land belonged to the crown. This meant the large uninhabited areas, like most of Lapland, and some large forested areas in Southern Finland that nowadays are either national parks or military training areas etc. Some 60% of the forest remained in private hands, in the South over 80%. But this is not all. Unlike in the feodal countries of Europe, Russia included, the forest was not owned by aristocracy, but for the most part by ordinary farmer families. This is still the case. This was not that important until the mid 1800's, when the sawmills and paper and pulp industry emerged. Private families owned the raw material, and therefore hundreds of thousands of families got their part of the wealth generated by the industry. At a local level, the extra money was put to good use, especially schools. In just two generations the grandparents that could not even write their names, saw their grandchildren start at college. The wealth and education was not exactly distributed evenly, but way more evenly than in most European countries of that time. The developement that later turned into economic success started in the 1800's, from the privately owned forests, through education and widely distributed wealth. At the same time the people of Russia only started to recover from centuries of serfdom.
Finland's flag 🇫🇮.
Finland has never been a part of Soviet Union . This is bs
Norway is also a neighbor of Russia. Just saying
Ya but historically they havent had nearly as much conflict with the Russians as the Finns. Finland has a very long border with Russia and Norway has a very small one.
@@TigranHakobyan-jh8ueDoesn't matter how long the border is. Finland was never under communism. Never a part of the Soviet union and never an eastern bloc country.
Oh, the old Greek flag made it into the thumbnail of the video
Finland CONSTANTLY fights against Sweden and Russia. Starting from vikings and novgorodians.
Nice vid ! Is it your voice or are you using a voice actor ? Just curious !
using voice app like a good bot.

The fact that Swedes Gay Boys went and Lost The Finland to The Ruzzians, don't mean that Finland is or was The Ruzzian colony. Finland was Part of imperial Ruzzia 108 years, Ruzzia don't has any part of Finland's birth. But go on..😂
Lithuania is much richer than Latvia and is Russia's neighbour you forgot to mention that
But still behind economically Nordic countries.
@@butterflies655 yes but the map shows that it's poorer than Latvia and that is not true.
That is not Finnish Flag. The colors are the other way. Blue (lighter blue) cross on white background.
Easy answer Finland had to industirials after the russian paymet deal. What caused the fast indrustilaition of Finland and Finland sold things to russia in the cold war what made Finland money what was put in own country rebuilding
This guy has NO CLUE! Finland is RIDDLED with CRONYISM. Misogyny & racism are rampant. Especially in key sectors like tech, judicial system, main media etc. Very harsh work place discrimination & bullying are legal and common. Same for sexual & intimate partner violence. Finland leading this in EU. So, despite having world's best schools for decades no GDP growth in 20 years. Thr cost of women's work place bullying alone costs tens of billions annually, e.g. as realy retirements due to depression.
How you define poor ?
This is pure BS
Finland was not a colony. Because of this major insult I am unsubscribing from your channel…
What a brain Washing...
