The lowly flat blade screwdriver is the most common tool for diagnosing mechanical faults. I wanted a tool that doesn't exist. A stiff screwdriver for poking and prodding that fits in a pocket. It's not magnetic and won't cause carbon pick-up on stainless steel. It's titanium so it doesn't weigh you down climbing up and over all day.
I love it that the guy with the worlds most clapped out mill is literally critiquing tool paths under a microscope. Cheers uncle!
Just because his shit's a little warbly doesn't mean that he can't say that someone else's is/isn't.
Lol
George Dennison what’s it cost for one of those
Just because she's sturdy doesn't mean you cant admire her beauty.
Needs a hole. For string. So you can tie it to your clothing. After you drop the first one into the North Sea, you'll see the wisdom of this.
I would wear it around my neck.
Working offshore comms on rigs I'd electrical tape neo magnets to my tools; hands off slap it to a rail or bulkhead, on the off chance of dropping it, most times it'd catch in the grate *9 out of 10; there's always that one damn time*
Doesn't need string holes or magnets if you keep it tight in your vice. But maybe you then need a hole in the vice for a string...
spud pud Nah, bolt the vice to the workbench. Then just put a hole in the workbench for a string...
Put an eye hook on the back to tie a string to. It's cleaner and easier to do. Put the workpiece in the lathe and bore into the pommel. Tap it and put the eye bolt in, tie your string to your bolt.
that thing is gorgeous. sign me up.
This Old Tony Does that mean you want one, or you want in on the manufacturing?
@@johnnyryall1400 I'd assume the correct answer is 'yes'.
Interested 🤤
Also thinking of machining my own breaker bar out if titanium
@thisoldtony did you ever get in on this? I just saw it and I also want in on this...
That definitely turned out amazing. I can only get so hard. So glad you ran with those pics I sent! More forgotten tools need to be remade, that's why I am stepping up and trying to get those wrenches made.
Looking forward to seeing the old tools come around again. There is definitely a market for them.
That would be awesome!
I’m assuming you sent him some Irwin WW2 drivers? I have a handful of them, including a HUGE flat head (maybe 14” long). Did other manufacturers use this design? I’ve only seen them from Irwin.
Excited for the wrenches!! Love both channels!
Titanium tools are a must in MRI rooms. Real PITA when you drop a $60 one down the wall and can't use a magnet to get it out.
“What have I got in my pocket?" he said aloud. He was talking to himself, but Gollum thought it was a riddle, and he was frightfully upset. "Not fair! not fair!" he hissed. "It isn't fair, my precious, is it, to ask us what it's got in it's nassty little pocketsess?
You're quite right. Every lad at work has a king size screwdriver with a slight bend in it. No pun intended. Would be nice to have something a bit more stiff.
I am a big fan of the overbuilt, whatever it happens to be.
The only kill is overkill
Good god man, not the microscope! :-o There are definitely some improvements to be made to the tool paths. Even on some of the products I've made dozens of now, i still tweak the tool paths and try new tools. It can never be perfect enough! I think the handle is in there for the long haul. It's internally doweled and epoxied through the titanium handle; essentially molded around and through the handle. I could see the wood potentially cracking at some point though, it's still just wood. Glad it made it safely to the Frozen North!
Nicely done Chris. Very well appointed box to boot!
Thanks, man! It didn't feel right just sending that in some bubble wrap or something. Plus this gave me an excuse to try box-making on the CNC.
Gorgeous job, Chris. Care to put a price estimate on one?
Congratulations sir! That's a wonderfull piece right there! I'll bet you one I can't afford one!
So THIS is what that giant hunk of Titanium was for! Great work man!!!!
No such thing as a flathead screwdriver, just a weak prybar that can loosen some screws occasionally ;)
Loosen and horribly chew out the heads of screws.
My co-workers say “huh?” a lot these days as my shop vernacular now incorporates “chooch”, “pixies” and “focus ya phoque!”
With you 100%. As an apprentice in 1970 I was presented with a toolmakers cabinet and tools, we were all told look after them and they will last a lifetime. Your vid took me right back in time (I still have the cabinet and tools...many of which I've repaired). Great vid. 👍
A real elekchicken killer. All the pixsis straight to your heart. Just like a fine whiskey or a lady's smile.
Back in my day we didn't have none of that electrocity bullshit, just metal and schmoo, the way god intended it!
Well maybe, the thing is, our demo screw drivers have full shank so yeah..
All those pixies jumping right up that handle was my first thought as well. ZZZaapp!!!
Good electricity tester it’ll never fail lol
Yeah it should be called you voltmeter.
I'm a plumber, i'm really good at destruction testing flat-head screwdrivers. Glad to help with that one, haha Looks amazing, much want.
I love this concept of heirloom tools. My great-grandfather had most of his grandfather's tools, and I remember seeing and using them as a child. Unfortunately they either went to action or were lost in other family members careless hands. It'd be great to be able to have something like that again.
Super Damn excited for this!! Love making my own tools or find old ones folks no longer want. Old tools were so robust in comparison to anything I have bought new.
Beautiful tool. My only concern is the security of the wooden bits. Perhaps you could reverse the angles at the edges so they would slide into the titanium like a dovetail. Just a thought.
or do a classic round wooden grip instead of those fancyass panels
I'm sure if they did it right it's mortised and titebonded; wood will shear before the glue breaks; although that does mean there's a slit in the tang, not that it should matter much.
You guys should market it with a _"Multiple Lifetimes Warranty"_
You could call it the feline warranty...
That is just pornographic! I totally agree with your statement that tools have become disposable. I remember when I first started my Engineering Course at Technical College, I had to make ALL my own tools, from clamps and screwdrivers right through to multi-level tool boxes. It has taught me to look after, not only my own, but everybody's tools that I would use, right down to ensuring that everything in my tool-boxes are in as good a condition as over 30 years of use can afford. Sir I doff my cap at thee.
Capt Caveman I agree and disagree. Good tools are still available that hasnt changed. They are just expensive. Back in the day they where more expensive than the cheap stuff we have now so not really to much difference beyond what the average home has now. I like Klein a Lot for screwdrivers. Milwaukee as well. If you ever have a chance to get the Klein electricians knife get it. Its built like a tank. But back on subject just like you I'm ocd with my tools. I want them to last my life atleast. I usually look for lifetime warrantys I can honor easily. For ratchets I use kobalt now. Craftsman has the lifetime warranty still but id be returning them once a week they are so garbage now.
As a former tech, I always needed a way to get leverage on the driver. As I can see the wrench would fit the square sides but I always visioned a hole some place as to fit anything round in as additional leverage. Maybe the handle flipping out and turning into a T handle and doubles as leverage. Just had a day of watching so many AvE videos.
That thing is beautiful. That'd be stolen in a heartbeat.
rescuebox7 and sold by a tweaker as a “pretty aluminum chisel”
For $2 and a bag of chips.
@rescuebox7 try and stamp your name on it hahaha
That's a multi-lifetime skookum tool. 200 years from now your great grandkids are going to have that on some Elon Musk space bus to Mars, pokin', proddin', and jammin' along.
Those'll be banned way before then.
by then the space bus will be repairing itself
I love the simple heirloom grade tool idea. Awesome.
I've seen a few like that, but most almost a century old. I love the handle/shank design of these. Would love to see them made again.
AvE designed screwdriver? Shut up and take my money.
Maybe he'll do just a steel version with no wood scales for cheaper!
needs to be cunsten toungeglide or it's not skookum enough
I'd buy one.
of course he did LOL
Maybe he’ll buy ‘em from Harbor Freight and resellem as the “bees knees” ?
Im sure there is a small market for over crafted tools at this point. When someone with the right 'optics' get seen with one I'm sure the whole idea of built to last will come around again.
Incredibly exciting idea! I look forward to seeing the next few you mentioned.
This is why I first got a lathe and mill, I wanted to make a can opener that would work well and last and be beautiful
you open cans with a milling machine? bravo!
Chris Davidson.. hahahaha, brilliant
Chris Davidson, We saw Ave open a box with one once.
So you made a hammer right ?? The universal opening tool !!
This is by far my favorite vijayo I’ve seen posted. Not of yours. Just period. The spirit of what you’re doing... you’re bringing real back and the way that makes me feel is hard to put in to words, but I know I think its awesome.
I thought a Screwdriver that sucked was orange juice without the booze?
ALAPINO The guys business is orange! Illuminati confirmed.
Hahaha!!!
Just a gorgeous piece of Real old school tool, when they were art forms as you said, know I usually joke around in my comments but that thing is just stunning! In both its design and its simplicity.
Absolutely LOVE it! I love custom old school craftsmanship!
I was lucky enough to be given a pair of these old screwdrivers a few years back. Now I'm diving deep into every flea market tool bin I come across. Skookum as pin nuts.
That handle looks like it would go in nice and smooth.
Mike's Tool Shed Sorry mate, ask nicely and I'm sure AvE and friends will whip one out with a big old gland end for hitting your button.
Yellow 77 or aqua gell may not even be needed if ya ate from the roach coach, slips right in the old brown eye
Avoid the Yellow 77 if you want to be able to get it out several years later, that crap hardens into a glue within "conduits".
It dose look a bit phallic. You think AvE is hinting at something here?
Thanks for the laugh bud
Whether you wanna call it a screwdriver, chisel, or something to stab your relief for showing up late, I love it! I see where you going and I'm on for the ride!
Thats the kind of tool a craftsman would have if for no other reason than the happy it gives the user. Beautiful!
I'm subtly disappointed that there aren't at least three comments seriously asking for a pozidrive version :j
@ Aluminum Foil- Posidrive? Never! Torx all the way dude!
Nah.. got to be a Reed and Prince pattern, for the thousands of old brass screws in the boat. Now that I'd buy.
Robertson surely what with the Cunukastani heritage and all..
Toafledermaus just posted a 22cal screwdriver video. I swear all my favorite channels always post shit at the same time. Keep it up!
Waiting for MACs Response to Trump's order to ban bump stocks... I'm pretty livid right now.
Really looking forward to seeing more in this. My friend and I are starting to delve into small scale manufacturing and I'm excited to see what you've learned.
Some of my most favorite tools that I own are handmade by me. I've forged hammers, pry bars, chisels, and punches. All of which have been put through more abuse than they were ever designed for. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside knowing that these were made by me, for me, and will still get the job done even though it's been 14 years since their creation.
Love it I have very similar screwdrivers stamped Irwin Made in The USA very solid design .
The grain near where wood meets metal is what you get when the wood’s surface is perpendicular to a radius of the trunk. It’s one of those cool patterns you get from quartersawing. You should want the wood to look that way! It’s a good sign! A plainsawn surface is inferior. A quartersawn board warps less with changes in moisture. Wood isn’t isotropic like metal. This can be a pain in various parts of the anatomy, but it can also be exploited.
Medullary rays are beautiful to boot
Love to hear wood talked about so technically, there was a time that all those terms and details were taken way more seriously
I love the idea of well-made tools like that. It's so rare these days that it's extremely refreshing.
keepin her alive. nice work good sir! thanks for all the laughs and keep up the good work!
Just loving it down here south of the border! Couple thoughts.... Can ya mill the tip with parallel sides like a gunsmith screwdriver? Also, for machining titanium, end mills with a small .005" - .010" radius on the tips works wonders, leaves fewer nasties. My favorite being the coated Data Flute 5 flute mills.
I’ll buy one if it has Skookum stamped in the handle or acid etched in the gland end. Can you even acid etch titanium? There’s a vidjeyo idea...
Not traditionally, you have to aerate muriatic acid to do it, but you definitely can
You can etch titanium. It's done with forged titanium to remove the harder alpha case stage from forging. Not sure what acid attacks it, but it's definitely done in industry. I know this from experience.
Nice! I have a few of the old ones and they feel great in the hand. Looking forward to the next step.
I love this! I have all kinds of old drivers picks hammers etc of my grandpa's. Good video bro!
You really should make these in sets of two. One right handed, and one left handed. LOL (It would be perfect for programs where new apprentices are sent to fetch a left handed screwdriver.) ;-)
Totally agree AvE should market this as left handed just to be obtuse. Just because he can.
I wish there was a way to give comments more than one thumbs up.
And ave should get This old tony to use the laser cubio to engrave it for a colab videjo. It could be a classic video
Never been able to find it everytime I've been asked to get one, people are always losing tools though.
@@davidbumpus3457 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😂😂😂😂😂
Let me know if you have any sheet metal needs or enclosures made. My shop has a 2000W Fiber laser that can cut up to 1/2" steel. Working in a job shop like mine, allows me to see 100s of different parts a month and come up with unique solutions for each part. We do single prototypes to 10s of thousands of parts. It has made me such a better engineer because I get to absorb all the great ideas that engineers from different backgrounds have come up with.
you are such a lucky boy
Now go absorb global warming for fucks sake
Please look into fabricating a Stanley 77 dowel cutter and the different cutting attachments. They are still the best wood dowel cutting tools out there. They are hard to come by around $500- $700 when they do. They come with a 5/8 cutter but the other cutters rarely come up for sale and can fetch $300 each. Please fabricate the cutters and sell on etsy so I can buy a set.
Love the design, it definitely inspires some pride in owning a tool like that.
I love everything about this. That is a work of art!
I am totally happy with my Wera screwdrivers. 32€ for a set of 12. work amazingly well.
I would sell you the one Wera screwdriver I bought. I'll stick with Wiha.
So you like the decomposing type of tools
I know it's more for poking about, but you've raved about spanner flats on the shaft before. Is the square section solid enough to make do with a 10mm or so spanner?
It's titanium. That means it will take all the torque that your piddly little 10mm spanner can possibly produce. The wrench will fail catastrophically before the screwdriver is scratched (or, more likely, the screw head will pop off).
Kevin Vermeer I'd think it would round it over on a tough job. But, slotted screws usually aren't that tough to turn so, that's probably a moot point.
That’s beaut! You summed it up with heirloom, and skookum as frig! I can relate to the downward spiral of tool quality these days. I have a collection of beautiful wood working tools from my grandparents that I don’t lend out.
My father was clearing out old tools and among them was a new in box Stanley combination plane. It's a piece of art. From the several wood handles to detail in the cast, pure delight to look at. It sits on our coffee table. People love to guess what it is. It looks so good some people don't think it is/was just an art piece and never functional. So ya!
Nice! Is it a 45? There's a site called "Patrick's Blood and Gore" that has information on all the old Stanley planes. It's an interesting read, and could help you date it. If you ever decide to use the thing, I believe you can get blades that work with it from Lee Valley Tools.
Jeff Spaulding you called it, it's a #45, blades and parts still wrapped, rosewood handles and all. Dad worked for a big city school district after the Navy. I think the work then was more practical than pretty so it stayed in the box.
I'd love to see that being made
So are you going to test it until she gives?
I hope so, all part of testing. He needs to make a jig that will let that screwdriver fit into his hydraulic testing rig.
Lol. I love that idea.
After 10 seconds I realized that has everything needed in a truest sense of screwdriver folklore
That is a sight to behold! Nice work.
It's been over a year now, how's this holding up @AvE?
Jesus man , i just get off a video from vice news talking about the third industrial revolution and in a nutshell its a network of people with internet, producing things within themselves and the first 2 mins you explained it a whole lot better than the nerd did l, "i got together with a friend and another one through the interweb and here some cool tools ". Nice.
Your first problem was watching anything from Vice. If you're looking for factual information, they aren't the place.
Vice used to be good until it turned into a biased left-wing rag..
Just gave that Vice video a watch, it's good, starts off on a bit of a downer but ends up cautiously hopeful. For anyone else interested: kzhead.info/sun/hLxsfZyDmGusiHk/bejne.html
Nothin' wrong with a bit of left wing bullshit, provides a bit of balance against the right wing bullshit.
Definitely beautiful though. Absolutely brings to mind the heirloom tools we have in out garages
That's a perfect handle screwdriver, I have many and I love them. Irwin made some for a while recently. 20+ year millwright.
How about rivets to keep the wood on, like a high-quality knife?
Brian Clark mosaic pins...
Brass rivets! Old perfect handle like... Just sayin. Some really beautiful piece of work there. AvE, i am jealous!,
yes the old Irwin drivers that this is modeld after use two rivets i dont think they even used any sort of glue. But they definately need some mechanical retention if you want it to last forever
Viagra pins ! Keeps the wood on!!!!
jeep2003 i would throw out the wood also and replace it with something like g10 as wood tends not to fare well over time in climates that go from one extreme to another i thing g10 or a similar composite would not only be more stable but also stronger
You shoulda worked for juicero
I love that my recommendations are offering up this era of AvE. Legit delighted about this.
Absolutely beautiful heirloom tool there!
Is it weird that this screwdriver gave me a bit of a chub?
Yeah it could be E.D. Shoulda been full hard
Bart Layman Hahaha, good one!
Got a trout myself, thanks
Not really, now if it was hallow ground I say full "diamond cutter" would be in order.
haha not at all
I have a complete set of wood handle screwdrivers like that I inherited from my dad along with his rawhide mallets ,Ill never part with them .theyre indispensable for gunsmithing
Precisely what I use screwdrivers like that for, as well. Out of curiosity, do yours have English maker's marks?
No marks at all the whole svrewdriver appears to be finished on a belt sander
Awesome poking prodding screwdriver...a work of art! I want one, or ten!
Most beautiful driver I've ever seen. I'd buy em!
That is stunning. I do agree that the tip ought to be hollow ground, but, hey, it's a prototype! The trolls need to go pound sand.
I want a steel one
I think you're nuts for doing it but i love that you did. From one Canuckistani to another... "Cheers!"
I would definitely buy that- For two reasons, to support the great content you create, and because I probably could use the crap outta that.
Don’t care what the price is, I want one. Perhaps a touch longer for better leverage, but yeah.
The good news is, it's titanium so you can apply all the torque you want.
Amperzand right, but longer makes it easier with no external "add one" needed.... Basically I am only so strong, thus a longer tool lets me accomplish more.
Kris Lyvers that's what she said Hahahaha Come on you know someone had to do it
Not really, titanium is great because it’s so light yet strong but any tool steel would be better ie s7
Well Ave......love your philosophy ( from a 40 year veteran of industrial pipefitting and welding) .....but amidst all the gushing over the metal type and microscopic metallurgy might you say a few good word over the stunning case this wonderful implement was packed and delivered in ?? eric in NM
My grandpa and his father bought/build about 20 screwdrivers all wooden handles between the two world wars ...my father used them his whole life and nowadays I use them and absolutely love them...
Had a few of those style flat bladed jobbers in dad's tool box when I was a kid. They were obviously older than dirt, but solid and stout. We used them as chisels more often than as a screwdriver. The pommels on the end held up pretty well despite the percussive nature of the small gorillas swinging at em with persuasion devices of mass destruction.
It can't be an heirloom if you lose it first day on the job.
Which is exactly what fucking happens every time I buy nice shit. One of the guys on the crew asks to borrow it, my DRS kicks in, I forget to ask for it back, and boom! I'm buying chinesium.
just stop being nice, that's what i always do.
buy it back on craigslist from that same jack in the box that borrowed it
Sigh. Story of my toolbox
Deranged Fords ha! For truer words have never been spoke.
Hell yeah, I'll take a #2 robbie lol
I think that’s one of the most beautiful tools I’ve ever seen and I want one very very much.
Very excited to see the small scale manufacturing. Old tools are great! They simply refuse to die! XD
Excuse the crude photodickery but why not do the obverse for the handle? imgur.com/a/ez7Mx More of a pain to machine but more skookum for tree carcass retention.
Undercuts are a pain in the butt to machine. You'd have to use something like a dovetail cutter (or a custom form mill) and do small step overs to get that final geometry. Add to that fact this be in titanium, you'd surely be looking at a decent price jump by making those inverted. alternatively you could flip it sideways and machine the undercuts, but then you'd have to add a larger radius to the inside of the flange in order to accommodate the diameter of the tool. Beyond those two milling options, you could instead waterjet or wire EDM out those flanges prior to any other machining, but again, you're looking at an extra setup, an extra machine, an extra tool, and and extra money. IMO, I'd make it square, and add a second means of retention besides glue. Maybe a tapped hole in the handle, run a bolt through the wood, and then plug the hole in the handle. Or just send an extra bottle of cyanoacrylate with each order ;)
Also it looks like a pecker through your wood. Not that I'm complaining.
you could machine that in a few passes with a dovetail cutter www.carbideanddiamondtooling.com/assets/images/Internal/Untitled.jpg
Fuckin' nailed it.
Xander Luciano If you check the comments above, the guy who made it chimed in and said he'd doweled it internally so it should be good.
Maybe you should engineer a juicer? :P
I still have some of my grandfathers old wooden tools and they are lovely to use and there is something nice about them.
I can no longer watch your videos at night. You always get me inspired to go hop out into the shop and work on something when I am really just trying to relax and get to bed soon. I guess I can use your videos in the morning since I don't drink coffee.
I’m curious what you would need to charge for those if you had like 100 made? I spend $200 on a beautiful pocket knife, why not a screwdriver? Maybe I’m way low?
SuperTomwaits yeah partner try $400! And that's HIS cost not what he would sell one for..
$500 dollar screwdriver? Great!! I could tell the local Snap-on jack off he can get his paycheck from somebody else's wallet. My son would have some good drivers when he gets a hankering to do a tear down too. Sounds like a win win to me.
I've read titanium can be brittle which would be detrimental to a screwdriver. I don't know if it's true. Any metalurists out there have an opinion?
Dude I want one of these how, where, how much for one
That's a hell of a nice tool ya got there lol I got my grandfather's tools when he passed and he always said,"if you get these why I'm gone, use em,that's what they there for". I do,I'm pretty ginger with most of them but they aren't growing mold, that's for sure.
We still have those in the Army. Screwdriver, flat tip, 3/8"x12", blade extends through handle. Translation; the ultimate prying tool.
Hey AVE, way off topic but what's the deal with the EDM? I ask because im selling a benchtop sinker edm, which includes a hydraulic power pack, and edm power supply, two things i hear you may find useful. PM me if interested, there's a vid-j-o on my channel if you're curious. Also, nice screwdriver, curious as to how well the tip will hold up to prying action, and possible chiseling.
*AvE*
I've got that same Allen key set!
Love the proportions and looks great ! I'd buy a set
A beauty, a bonnie, and a joy to behold!
Where to get man, I'd buy one
Is it normal that my fella started tingling when you pulled that thing out?
scars as long as the tips don’t cross.
you might be looking for more of a Phillips or an Allen then. I normally look for a Box end to bust my nut but im not judging
what a beauty ! I'd really enjoy seeing the pats being prototyped
Love those old style screw driver perfect handles. McMaster-Carr use to carry them.
