Kakegurui is one of the weirdest shows I've ever seen. That's a good thing, mind you. I've always loved the weird and strange things that came out of the internet as a kid, and it led me down a path that eventually landed me here. Kakegurui, Paranoia Agent, The Eric Andre Show, so many amazing products coming out of the strangest minds of our generation. So, as a love letter to the strange, here's my review of Kakegurui: Compulsive Gambler. Enjoy!

  • KAKEGURUI: TWIN VIDEO OUT NOW: kzhead.info/sun/a91ufLqlqn6af6M/bejne.html In the process of making a detailed and rigorous analysis, you need to leave some points on the cutting room floor. I wanna talk about some of them in this comment: - Mary Saotome is a very interesting character. Mary goes through everything a normal main character would, but the show instead focuses on Yumeko. Think about it, a non-rich person who was able to enter the school via scholarship (said in the manga) slowly rises in the school until becoming a pet. She manages to climb out of the bottom of the system with a resolve to change it for the good of everyone. If Yumeko didn't exist, Mary would be the main character. - This is not *actually* the weirdest anime I've ever seen. It's the second weirdest. But it's honestly pretty hard to come up with an eyecatching title that says "wow this is a really weird anime but it's not THE weirdest anime" y'know? The weirdest one I've seen is Paranoia Agent, which I might do a video about soon. I'll add more as I think of them.

    • how fascinating that you bring up the first point. i believe you are aware of kakegurui twin that will be coming out in August 2022, where it focuses on the story BEFORE yumeko arrives at the academy where mary is the protagonist, as she goes against the previous incarnation of the student council. i am incredibly excited to see your review of that when it comes out. kakegurui twin currently has an ongoing manga series (i myself am halfway through it) and the games definitely display zero compromise, just like the games in kakegurui xx.

    • honestly, kakegurui isn't my favourite anime (if you're curious i can divulge on my favourite anime) but the way you've discussed your points and insights regarding the show, well damn. it might as well be my favourite. see its this kind of analysis that now makes me fucked for options when choosing who my favourite character in the show is. all of them are incredible 😁

    • at the end of the day, i feel that a lot of criticism is levied at the show and it truly demonstrates that people just aren't willing to accept something different, something which you've pointed out so succinctly. kakegurui will always have a special place in my heart for so many of the reasons you've elucidated within the video, some of which i didn't even realise until I heard you say out. thank you so much for this incredible deep-dive into the psychology of yumeko and kirari, and I am beyond excited to see what you make of kakegurui twin next year. SPOILER: you are going to love sachiko juraku.

  • One of the very few shows where I actually love the sexual scenes, mostly because they don't feel horny to me, they feel more... disgusting. Like you should be put off by those characters. It screams to me "Look at how inhumane this is. No normal person should be like this. Pleasure in the face of death. You watch with horror and disgust in your face... and yet you don't stop watching. They live and die by the twisted ways of this wretched circus... and you keep watching. Cheering for someone barely any better than the antagonists." I feel this has so much more appeal than normal, senseless fanservice. It's almost borderline horror for something with such a cheerful and colourful aesthetic.

  • "Midari wants to die" Actually, Midari wants to experience the thrill of a near death experience. When we first meet her, in the bathroom scene, after surviving, she says, "Yes!! I survived!" (paraphrased probably). She LOVES a terrifying thrill (hence, why she stabbed her eye out, and got genuinely mad when she found out the finger game was completely safe.) So, she doesnt want to die, but she wants to experience the thrill of dying or almost dying. Anyways, as an ex-diehard kakegurui fan trying to get back into it, i love this video A LOT:D HELP ME "actuallt☝🏼🤓"

She won’t ever try to lose on purpose while Midari always will - Midari takes away the risk that Yumeko craves and that’s why Yumeko hates her.

  • 5:37 : You could also call Yumeko an invasive species. These types of species have no predators and are largely foreign to an existing food chain, much like Yumeko is to Hayakawa Academy. They prey on almost every living thing in the ecosystem and the resources, biodiversity, and all other aspects of the ecosystem are depleted until this species reproduces so much that it reaches carrying capacity (the maximum number of individuals in the species that the ecosystem can handle). An invasive species poses a massive threat to any ecosystem; its uncontrollable without human intervention, which parallels to Yumeko’s unpredictable and strange nature compared to other students and student council members at Hayakawa. An obvious difference, though, is that unlike an invasive species, Yumeko has no existing carrying capacity and is free to wreck havoc without limit. Yumeko herself is an invasive species to the academy, and honestly it’s the perfect, most interesting part of this series seeing the impact she has on almost every aspect of how the school runs.

The school is treated almost like an Eden, and the little "snake" would be someone that brings a revolutionary and defying feeling, breaking down the "peace" and hierarchy that once was established by the student council in that paradise. (even some songs of the ost are named after this) I also love how the President and Yumeko are so different, yet so similar, not only in this kind of mythical meaning, but also in things like color theory. I didn't like the second season that much, but i do recommend the anime,it's really fun to watch and easy for someone who just started to watch anime.

EDIT: I dont necessarily disagree entirely with the inclusion of sexual themes, however there are some that are placed with reason and purpose (e.g. Yumeko's explaination to Maeri in the first episode; or her general being "turned on" by herself or others taking huge risks) and others that are in my opinion untastful fanservice (e.g Sayaka grabbing yumekos boobs or midari liberally org*sming in a toilet stall). In general I do think it mostly serves the purpose of being uncomfortable to add to the weirdness of the show. It also makes it an interesting tool to show just how far these people can go driven by their pleasure they get from taking these major risks.

    @dontperceiveme3025@dontperceiveme30252 жыл бұрын
    • I wouldn’t say the sexualization is unnecessary. Sexuality is ultimately the most powerful energy, representing pleasure, creation, etc… it’s the only thing keeping us alive. Yumeko and the others getting “sexual” pleasure is to show just how integral gambling is to life itself. It’s the only time she feels anything.

Who wouldn't want to see her mentor the likes of Sora (her friendship/potential crush on Ryota shows she seems attracted to people who are able to retain both their purity and insanity). Or... Kirari mentors the likes of Alladin (Magi anime) or Naruto (the reason being she's the kind of ruler who brings everything to order only to see it burn later when it no longer fulfills her desires, a quality Alladin could make use of given his past and the fact magic is pretty much a way to play with reality, and because Naruto wants to be Hokage to a Village in a world that could use a remake first, so why not get advice from the queen herself) ? Or... Midari mentors the likes of Riku and Sasuke (she is pretty self destructive like them after all, which earned her a compliment from Kirari, but she also understands that self destruction and the habilities she gained from it are meaningless without the right person by your side) ?

The first being after the Midari Gamble when Ryota and Yumeko do a coin toss over sweets and the second being when Kirari and Ririka first go to sayaka to offer her a spot as secretary. With yumeko and Ryota I find it interesting in how his willingness to gamble with her is a decision he makes on his own ( he isn’t goaded into it too much) and how he talks about trusting yumeko and how that seems to really touch her heart, in a way that’s different from her bond with her other friends ( being that I don’t think she and they fully trust eachother) . The Sayaka moment is interesting cause it implies that Kirari and Ririka switch places when they went to offer her a position and some how against a nearly perfect imitation sayaka says “ wait was that really you” . It’s kinda cool how she can unknowingly tell the twins apart even before getting to know them and I think that in part is what really fueled Kirari’s Fascination ( love) for sayaka. She knows things without knowing things. I think in both instances Yumeko and Kirari really like the ability their partners seem to have in trusting and truely seeing them for who they are and in the acceptance of that . All that being said I’m a total shipper and I’m probably just reading too much into it lol

  • I was mostly enticed by this show merely because I can't really draw out what Yumeko's end game is. Even with the manga updates which is very far from where the current story in the end of season 2 is. Another thing is that, on contrary with what mostly people might say, I think Yumeko is the most controlled person every game. She completely dominates everyone to put everything on the line not leaving them with a "safety net" even if they lose. Kirari on the other hand just likes destruction wherever she can get it. You're right when you say she completely lose interest when the fascination phase ends, leaving that person to dry. Yumeko, on the other hand, is drawn to a person to enact justice and nurture every time. One thing I only disagree with this video is that Yumeko really really badly wanted to face Kirari on a gambling match. I dunno if it has something to do with their family issues and Yumeko's older sister but I have a feeling that a story from the past involving Yumeko's older sister is involved in this end game plan she have. Edit: Kakegurui is far from predictable. I dont want to spoil anything but in the manga, the whole election thing is a dumpster fire currently. Lol. Everyone is on the same ground, no one is above the others when it comes to the opportunities available. The only neutral character so far is Runa. Lol.

  • I reached the anime for the sake of my own obsession and I started to love it. Although the first season started to be harder and harder to stand with each episode and each win for Yumeko it still was interesting enough. Going trough both seasons in a row and having something for such weird in society's mind concepts and characters i really enjoyed it and really loved it. The tower of Doors arc (especially in the mangа) is my absolute favorite. But I can't reach to one last conclusion, i can't even get close to it, I think I understand Kirari and even share a big part of her ideology. She is the perfect antagonist and the one I dreamed about for years before to know about the anime (or considering another favorite character of mine is Koko I just may have something for eccentric albinos). She have her ideology, her aquarium, her sister, her sayaka and it all helps for understanding her. In the other hand, Yumeko do not have any of that... Yumeko is almost flat and anything about her character can be seen rarely and mainly through Kirari as an reflection. I though would say there is a difference between Yumeko and Kirari that at least in my opinion put them in the roles of God and Devil (not good and bad, but god and devil through the eyes of one atheist). Yumeko have to work, Yumeko can and seduce, Yumeko blackmail and use, Yumeko play with people and their minds in a lot more direct way than Kirari.

  • I adore the soundtrack of this anime and how it adds to the tone and feeling of each game. It’s usually chaotic yet smooth, reflecting how crazy bets are being made on games that seem so standard at times, like Life or Death and the Choice Poker match at the end of Season 1. There are always undertones of rhythmic distortion, my favorite example being Strange Visage. Look it up if you’re curious, it’s kind of like Yumeko’s theme.

  • I honestly thought both the manga and the anime where great, the way they worded things and how dramatic they were really added to how strange it was. Along with the gambling methods, they were worse through out the series, Depending on the person they were gambling. And the characters in general. Some of the relationships they had and how they showed off the characters. it may have been strange, but sort of in a good way. Also the manga had different protags, and characters like Mary's backstory (sort of a backstory more of just how she became better at gambling and her past friendships). When I read the first manga I honestly was surprised on how easy it was to understand what they were doing with the gambling methods and how they made it easier for themselves to win. And the fact that pretty much all of the characters have a psychotic-like side to them brought out how much pride they had on winning and how serious the match was. Characters like Yumeko and Kirari naturally brought off a calm and peacful presence, But had a whole other side to them. Almost all of the characters were two faced, and that is something that made me more interested in what the character would be like throughout the series and what development they had.

  • i love how we as viewers dont know anything about yumeko and unlike any other anime that would present a 15 minute monologue about how everything has led up to the climax, kakegurui doesn't show yumeko's thoughts and i think thats genius! we never know how shes truly feeling and that and the psychological aspect of the show is what drew me to watch it again and again and it has since became my favorite anime after attack on titan

  • Im so glad someone who was actually able to understand and engage with the themes of the show did a video on it. A lot of these other youtube reviewers made the dumbest videos i’ve ever seen about Kakegurui and didn’t seem to understand dynamics and themes that were explicitly spelled in the actual dialogue lol. Kakegurui is so good to me because of the opulence, the over-the-top stuff, the intense emotion and the amazing aesthetic of the art and music that accompanies it all. To me Kakegurui is about indulging in base pleasures, excitement and wonder and thrill. I don’t think it would have clicked if a single element was out of place but everything comes together so well. I like how you highlighted the difference between Midari’s masochism and Kirari’s hedonism because the difference in those two as they relate to Yumeko was such a clever way to illustrate Yumeko’s own character. As for the fanservice and sexuality - it is very over the top and it makes me a bit uncomfortable, but it’s also very interesting to me how many straight guy anime fans who cherish all forms of fanservice in anime and start dumb fights about it seem to be put off by the fanservice in Kakegurui. It’s fascinating and to me I think it says a little bit about the narrative aim and the target of the sexualized scenes; I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Kakegurui is a hit with female audiences. This show seems like its baiting girl-on-girl action for male titillation at first, but as you go deeper you realize that the relationship some of these girls have with each other is genuine and laid out in the text. Like, you didn’t touch on it in the Tower of Doors segment but the fact that the tower is in a field of lillies … and the objective is to carry a lily back and forth … and the gamble ends with Kirari and Sayaka jumping into a field of lilies together and doing a romantic embrace … thats no coincidence! Lilies symbolize gay female love in Japan, even giving their name to the romance manga subgenre about it (yuri). Kakegurui Twin, while also still very sexual in sometimes offputting ways, also delivers on very explicit and clear declaration of love and desire between women, in a way that is still a little surprising for this kind of anime. I think these super intense relationships between all the characters are also an important factor in what makes this show so great to watch.

  • Kakegurui is such an interesting show because it is everything you typically don't see in a show. Everything that in any other show would be considered terrible writing. We have Yumeko, a protagonist that doesn't feel like a protagonist. She is an unchanging force in this show that never seems to learn or develop or evolve. Her character is a mystery to the viewers themselves. We don't know nearly anything about her and what we do know doesn't make sense. She's also a character that most people cannot actually relate to. We can't understand her feelings, motivations, fears, practically anything at all. We also don't know what her end goal is, if she even has one, or what will eventually stop her. She's a character that has shown that even when she crashes to rock bottom she doesn't stop. This show humanizes and gives personalities to almost all side characters, rather than the protagonist. We know every other persons motivations, fears, desires, etc. We get to know their very core and everything that made them what they are. Which makes it so much harder to watch as the protagonist, a person we are meant to side with, tares them down until there is nothing left. This show basically makes you empathize and relate to everyone else. But it carries this sentiment in such a way that you still don't hate Yumeko. Because Yumeko isn't a sadist, she doesn't actually want to hurt people; she just wants to gamble. And finally, this show is amazing at making scenes so disturbing and hard to watch. Unlike other shows that attempt this via using extreme gore or body horror, this show uses psychological tension to do so. We see the slow, gradual build up to the climax. We watch as characters that we come to near fully understand within the time spend of a few minutes completely break. Kakegurui has very little scenes of gore or things most people relate to the horror genre, but rather uses symbolism and tension to unnerve people. Hell, they even make the fan service scenes disturbing and uncomfortable to watch, which is kinda impressive.

This show had me both very confused as to what the fuck was going on but I also understood every detail and emotion that was shown. It's weird that I both understood and didn't understand but that's what made me hooked on it on the first place.

It's actually quite nice when review channels kinda tell us a bit about themselves, and what they're doing in life instead of just getting reviews, cause it let's us know you on a somewhat personal level. Thanks a lot for this video, I appreciate the effort that went into it. For me kakeguri was a very interesting anime and I've rewatched it many times unlike other animes I've seen. I could never describe the concept myself, all I had where those emotions that came along watching the anime. I am absolutely fascinated with Yumeko Jabamis character and nature, and seeing you putting her whole being into words- describing that chaotic force with such precise analysis made me SO happy. You cannot fathom how euphoric I was to see that someone FINALLY GETS IT. While everyone else is looking at unimportant features like the fan service or "the waifus", you found a way to put the moral of this insane world into words. Expressing all that I feel but cant say out loud, into this one video. Thank you Cursed Judge. Thank you.
