There were bad signs (and predictions) surrounding Arizona Coyotes relocation

There were signs, cheers, tears, a "Salt Lake sucks" chant and one last Whiteout inside Mullett Arena on Wednesday night as the Arizona Coyotes played their final game ahead of the franchise's expected relocation to Utah.
As the buzzer sounded following the Coyotes' 5-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers, tears were flowing as fans said goodbye to the team that has called Arizona home since 1996.

It's been a long road to resolution for the Coyotes situation. There has been bankruptcy, the NHL taking control of the franchise, a threat to move to Hamilton, Ontario, several ownership groups, and a fight for a new arena that's gone on for over a decade.
Through all that, there has been a loyal fanbase, hoping a resolution would mean a permanent home in Arizona, not the constant reminder that the team could move elsewhere. In the end, time ran out and the team will be playing in Salt Lake City, Utah, next season.

even as an impartial fan of the NHL on the East Coast, watching that final game and seeing/hearing how heartbroken the entire broadcast crew was, alongside the fans, broke my heart. no matter how unstaintable that franchise was in its current state, the fans didn't deserve to see their own team quickly and abruptly snatched from them like that.
I really appreciate you and Shannon covering this relocation. Glad you guys collabed, would love to see more of it in the future!
65 years old, been attending Coyote games since they moved here. Muerello better not get an expansion team in the Valley if and when it comes it comes to fruition. I live Peoria/Glendale north border so the Glendale facilities are perfect for me, however I get the drive in rush hour traffic from East Valley fans would be a nightmare. This should have never happened. Thanks Brodie for all of your down to Earth commentary and common sense wisdom.
He still owns the roadrunners
@@steves1390 And Coyotes for the next 5 years at less.... so if they want another team in AZ it will be the same owners..... if they don't like him... best not want a team then
@@-SkyCat- agreed
Before ANY team is back in AZ there needs to be an arena built and ready to go under the ownership's control and with the funding and upkeep set up in a place that fans can get to without much hassle. No "Temporary" home,no leasing from Glendale and no sharing with the Suns. If that's met the owner needs to be vetted and approved.
I’m absolutely heartbroken
Sorry for your loss. Couldn’t imagine losing the team I grew up watching.
I’m sorry. Don’t hate, Utah for this
While I'm a Sharks fan first, Yotes were always my close second. I grew up playing ice hockey in their youth leagues, and I'm thankful everyday those were setup. I feel you on this.
it was tough to watch the final game last night, everyone was very emotional
The first bad sign was the 2011-12 season. Won the division. Made a run to the conference finals and were last in average home attendance. They were one of the best teams in the league during that season & couldn’t draw ants to a picnic
Gary Bettman chose for the league to support the wrong team. Atlanta had far greater fan support over the years and a more passionate fanbase than Arizona ever had.
@@willp.8120 The Trashers moved to Winnipeg. The Coyotes had nothing to do with it. The reason Arizona was chosen was because the NHL wanted a team in the western United States. I thought Arizona was a bad choice not only because its a desert. But they had other Major Sports like Baseball, Basketball, and Foothall to compete with. The team should have gone to Seattle, Portland, Las Vegas, and yes Utah.
@@sit2go THAT is the absolute dumbest reason to believe and put in writing for why the NHL wanted to keep Arizona in the league. Once you said it does not belong because it is located in a desert, you discredited yourself completely from a valid argument. Just sit down.
@@willp.8120 As much as I support Atlanta returning to the NHL, I completely disagree with your statement about Arizona fans.

For the folks in Canada who are still pissed off that the original Winnipeg Jets flew to the desert 27 years ago, and have taken a perverse delight in all the Coyotes' mishaps, I say that as an Arizona (at the time) I would rather have seen Phoenix get an expansion team rather than take a franchise from a fan base that cared deeply about them. I feel the same way about fans in Quebec City, who not only saw their team leave for Denver, but then saw that team win the Cup in their first season. (Although I can safely say that the Montreal Canadiens would NEVER have traded Patrick Roy to Les Nordiques.)
Bettman was reeeally hedging his words. Even he doesn’t seem to like Meruelo.
Utah will have a tough act to follow Seattle and Vegas in regards to both attendance and enthusiasm. But Arizona will never never never see a NHL team again
Let's hope and pray.
The irony. Atlanta Thrashers go to Winnipeg. Winnipeg Jets go to Glendale Arizona. Winnipeg Jets are having trouble drawing in Winnipeg
Winnipeg is a football town. The Blue Bombers are a community-owned team. Asking people to pony up money for 40 games instead of 9 games can be a problem if economics are an issue or the thrill of seeing the Jets is gone.
Winnipeg Jets aren't going anywhere. Despite the recent dip in attendance, the franchise is turning a profit.

@@bryan89wr You can keep saying that, but the owner says otherwise if the fans do not do their part to buy season tickets.
I am just holding onto hope they do come back. It’s so sad 😞 if they are gone for good
incompetent ownership will no longer have the ability to lie, cheat and disrespect the people and fans in arizona
Makes me so angry that deadbeat owner will be a billionaire soon, he don't deserve a penny
Arizona ownership may be incompetent, but at least they tried and didn't intentionally sabotage their team like Atlanta Spirit Group did for the Atlanta Thrashers.
I went to the University of Arizona and would go to Tucson Roadrunners games while I was there. I just realized this morning when hearing the news that they will likely be relocated as well. This totally sucks and it seems ridiculous that Arizona won’t have hockey because many of the people in that state really care about the sport. No offense, but I’m not sure if the issues that were happening in Arizona will be solved in Utah.
They’re relocating to Mullet Arena from what I heard
@@TheToiletCushionyeah seems likely
Utah has sold 11,000 season tickets in one day.
@@TheToiletCushion There is no decision on that.
The Coyotes owner treats his team like a casino, hence why he sold to Ryan Smith and then says he will have an arena in 5 years for the Coyotes to come back....maybe if he treated them like a team, this wouldn't be an issue....
If he can get that land bid If he failed, he probably gonna all out in GSR in Reno, since he owns it, and Roadrunners gonna meet the same fate So, either Arizona gonna have to stick with him again if he get expansion, or losing Roadrunners too
I don't understand the heartbreak, I would fly down from Vegas to see the VGK play the Coyotes at Jobing Arena or whatever name they called it and the arena there was half empty and that's being generous. Now the team leaves and everyone is heartbroken? Shouldn't take 28 years to get your act together and then the team says they're leaving and everyone is a yotes fan, am I alone on this?
Most nhl fans could see this coming for 15 years. Only bettman and toxic az. fans who believed the lies and broken promises couldn't see this ultimate demise coming. And bettman's stubborness to keep az. going got him played in the end and cost nhl a $ billion to go away.
NEWSFLASH: Alex Meruelo was on Burns & Gambo and stated that he plans on moving the Roadrunners from Tucson to Mullett Arena. Very risky IMO - you have a great fan base in Tucson for an AHL level team that you're going to take away from them (who thinks that will anger the loyal local fans there...?) and move them into a facility that used to be the home of an NHL team, making that a real step down for Coyotes fans in Phoenix. Lose Lose IMO.
I saw this same thing happen in the NFL with the Browns... Cleveland got SCREWED. Now it's here in AZ... the Yotes are not the greatest team.. but the fans always get screwed...
The Browns were actually good and had a great history. The Coyotes were a joke from the day they arrived to Arizona until the day they left.
The mayor never thought that the NHL had a Plan B in place. He was stunned by how quickly the team was sold and moved to Utah. Fortunately for the mayor, the average age in Scottsdale is more than 10 years older that the US median, so most of the voters are more concerned about their blood pressure and regular bowel movements.
Utah Black Diamonds. Best skiing anywhere
Too bad as a professional athlete they can’t do extreme activities. In their contract
NHL fans: it’s obvious that Phoenix is not a hockey market, why does Gary Bergman insist on trying to make it work. Also NHL Fans: the Coyotes are moving to Salt Lake, this is very sad for the folks in Phoenix.
So sad!
The Québec NORDIQUES left town to become the AVALANCHES and whent winning a Stanley Cup....what hurts more ....
I just bought my season tickets to see the new NHL team at the Delta Center. Utah welcomes the players with open arms :)

No it wouldn’t. They’d still be stuck in a college rink with no hope of getting a better one for at least three years.
@@Anonymousthanks but there would’ve been that draw for fans & almost guaranteed revenue generator. The league would’ve given them more leeway
I hope the Utah franchise doesn't go with "Yeti" as the nickname. Just doesn't sound right.
Don’t the Avalanche have somewhat of a claim to the Yeti likeness?
I don't think the fans are "yeti" for this....
Just come up with a name, don't drag it out all spring and summer
I agree. Terrible name. Utah Raptors or the Utah Eagles would be best
I don’t like Yeti either.
I don't understand why Houston and Quebec City were leap frogged in this whole thing
Because the utah jazz owner has an arena, and has been extremely interested, compared to Houston...if this was the same situation with the rockets owner, it could have gone there... Another thing, is its much preferred to keep the team in the central, as opposed to moving them in the east, and then moving Detroit or somebody back to the west...
I’ve been trying to figure something out… is this the first time someone actually wanted to buy the Coyotes at the NHL’s asking price (and didn’t try to move them several miles too close to Toronto)? I don’t think so. And that’s why Houston and Quebec weren’t leapfrogged. Nobody in Quebec has that much, and the Houston owner was only making himself available at a discount. This leads me back to the thought that Gary Bettman wasn’t as interested in really keeping the Coyotes in Arizona. He absolutely was tasked with “preserving” (or enhancing, if you wish) the franchise values of all NHL owners. I think that tells you something about the NHL.
Quebec City? Cute little "hamlet" thinking it is a big league city.
@@willp.8120 Packers out of Green Bay! Disclaimer: I am a sports fan. But sports isn’t as big time as you think it is. By no means should it ”define” a market. Not that Quebec was terribly popular among players back when the Nords were there. But with your logic, there’s 10 different markets more suitable to baseball than Cincinnati. Maybe, instead, we should stop the madness. Fan ownership, every city gets some team, promotion and relegation. Or else.
@PCSPounder actually Quebec City was one of the finalist the last time around for expansion, and currently have a stadium ready to use. Houston on the other hand has been talked about since the 90's, way before that current stadium was even built. Google search each city with nhl at the end , all the info is a click away
NHL Coyotes will relocate from AZ to UT as the LDS .

@@jjmarz1001 okay? So? Doesn’t mean it’s gonna work in the long run
Its even more dumb how blind Utah is as next door my Colorado Avs have a logo of a furry foot well that's a Sasquatch foot and the Avs old mascot was a migit yeti so Utah would be trying to steal somn from a next door neighbor state go ahead be the Yetis the Colorado Avs will be your difficult rival real quick
this is a bad thing and sets a dangerous precedent. the NHL will contract teams, leave behind the "history ", logo, colours etc., and move them resembling expansion. team will have new name, colours, history, etc. this may happen to Winnipeg and other teams like Florida. the league will have numerous placeholder potential expansion franchises, while getting into new places. all the while the number of teams will stay at 32.
The precedent was set a long time ago. The Arizona Coyotes isn't the beginning of relocations. Kansas City Scouts -> Colorado Rockies -> New Jersey Devils Oakland Seals -> Cleveland Barons Atlanta Flames -> Calgary Flames Winnipeg Jets -> Phoenix Coyotes Quebec Nordiques -> Colorado Avalanche Minnesota North Stars -> Dallas Stars Hartford Whalers -> Carolina Hurricanes Atlanta Thrashers -> Winnipeg Jets
The upside for Arizona’s future team is they no longer claim Winnipegs’s garbage past and they start fresh but the downside is they lose the talent the team has brought in during the rebuild.
Actually they do. As part of the sale they get to keep the history along with the name and logo. It was reported on ESPN. You can now also look at the wiki page for AZ which has them listed as inactive and Utah’s NHL page with no name and almost no history except the sale of the team.
@@dsarmy1 No. they did an interview with the owner today. They only keep the branding. Team name and colors and stuff like that. The history, old identity, players, assets are all gone. They will come back as the Coyotes 2.0 if they come back. The Coyotes 1.0 are officially dead. History included.
@@ki2726 No you are wrong. You would actually try’s the Yotes owner after all of this? I trust the reporting from ESPN and the new owner more.
@@dsarmy1 You aren’t smart then. It’s like when the Seattle Sonics moved to Oklahoma City. Oklahoma City took their history and young talent. Seattle just kept their name (Sonics). If Utah got an expansion team they would’ve got a fresh start but they took a relocated team.
@@ki2726 Here watch this video and pay attention.
5 to 6000 fans just not enough to support an NHL team. Utah will average much more than that from the beginning
Jazz or Coyotes? Pick one. I frame it this way because the ticket pricing will force the hands of the vast majority of fans. Salt Lake City is about to become the smallest market (formerly Denver) with both. Denver is larger and, up until the last few years, one of the Nuggets or Avs sucked at any given time.

Completely agree. Between that, the constant shit talk, and the hoping that players leave and the team fails here. Everyone I've talked to here has expressed how much it sucks that they're losing a team, but your anger is directed at the wrong people.
It didn't bother me much. They're going through a grieving process and part of it is kind of just lashing out.
I’m sure the sentiment is about the relocation, not the city itself. I remember the “Nashville Sucks” chants in New Jersey in 1995. NJ fans really knew nothing about Nashville (though we questioned if there was an appetite for hockey in that market at the time), but were vocal about the prospect of relocating that sucked.
It was said today after the sale that Arizona gets to keep everything including the name, logo and history. They just lose the current team and 1 to 5 years of play. The owner really needs to get a stadium built. Salt lake essentially starts as a new franchise but already has players and staff and no need for an expansion draft.
Totally classless behavior
