LGBTQ+ Community Debates Identity Politics and the 2020 Election (Part 2/2)

2024 ж. 19 Мам.

People across the LGBTQIA+ spectrum came to the VICE offices in Brooklyn to hash out some of the most pressing issues they face today. This is part 2 of that conversation.
Within the LGBTQ umbrella lies a multitude of identities and ideologies. In an effort to showcase this VICE gathers a diverse group of progressive and conservative members of the LGBTQ community to discuss topics that relate to queerness and its intersection with culture, and politics.
Our goal is to foster conversations that are already happening within communities. With this format, we hope to give the viewer a rare opportunity to witness a conversation with people across the aisle that they otherwise might never find themselves in.

    • I think, and I honestly might be wrong because I am definitely lacking in trans knowledge and education, but it's that the terms "boy" and "girl", as well as "man" and "woman" are all gender expressions. That they identify as a boy, or a girl, etc. but female and male is the sex, ie. what organ is between their legs. so that person most likely is referring to them having a sex change, but not identifying with the terms that are gendered like "boy" or "girl". • Privilege is the dumbest thing ever. The assumption that someone is more “privileged” than others based upon their skin colour etc is just idiotic. It completely disregards somebody’s life experience and trivialises it based upon something as superficial as skin colour or sexuality. Apparently through this system a person of colour would be less privileged than a white male, even if said white male has been homeless for 3 years. Privilege encourages a victim identity, where people try and gather as many labels as possible in order to make themself feel superior.

      @EverFlower@EverFlower11 ай бұрын
  • While Jamie was asking Blair a question, they mentioned "people telling other people that they can be either feminine or masculine", which says everything about their world view. They are completely confused. A woman can sometimes be feminine and sometimes be masculine. Today I could feel like styling my hair, putting my makeup on and wearing a dress with high heels to work, but tomorrow I could just make a ponytail, put on my most masculine checked shirt and Timberlands and wear no makeup. A woman can equally enjoy taking dancing AND carpenting classes. At the same time there are many women who are extremely feminine and it doesn't make them more of women than those who are used to more masculine kind of behaviour. So when Jamie was talking that reminded me of a situation when an inexperienced teacher, early in their career, has to explain something they are confused about themselves to their students. When you yourself don't fully understand what you are talking about, people around you will not understand you. And there's no wonder some transgender people don't want to be associated with non-binary people when one of the latter says that they are neither a man, nor a woman and at the same time they're both and even "beyond". What does that suppose to mean? The inability to define what you are distorts your whole perspective of the world around you. Overall, most people were quite respectful towards each other. That's awesome

    • @@mynameisddotcalm1008 Biologically and mentally he's a man. There's no brain's gender. Technically he's a man with a lot of surgeries. Yes, sex based on a biological factor so it's the most important thing. You can change your looks however you want, you can lawfully change your sex in the passport, etc, but in the reality you're still your biological sex. and it won't change. Your last sentence makes no sense because feminine men can look stereotypically female and have gender dysphoria. Would you call them women too?

      @papismacker@papismacker4 жыл бұрын
    • Alejándro / Technically, Blaire is just “a man with a bunch of surgeries,” but if we didn’t know she was trans, we’d be using she/her pronouns, since she obviously resembles more of a female. It’s really just better to be less confusing and use female pronouns on her. Using male pronouns on Blaire would be about as confusing as to use she/her or they/them pronouns on Jaime when he’s obviously just a guy wearing women’s clothing, and doesn’t resemble a female in any way other way.

      @ajgerbi@ajgerbi4 жыл бұрын
    • *Bad Word* but what if grass was blue... We already know that he's trans so my phrase "man with bunch of surgeries" describes Blair very well. If we wouldn't know - yes, we could call him by she/her pronouns but what would change? He is still a man, it doesn't matter how'd you call him.

EVERYTHING is so incredibly nuanced that everyone wants to make a special box that fits exactly to their specifications, but at what point are we going to stop adding letters to the LGBT acronym? Typically, when someone transitions, they transition to MTF or FTM so if you’re non-binary and feel like you’re neither, what exactly are you transitioning to? I do believe that someone can identity as Trans and not have medical procedure done, especially not done right away. But to be Trans and non-binary? Don’t those two conflict/overlap? She was not trying to say that being non binary is not a thing and is not a part of the LGBTQ+ community but they’re not a part of the TRANS community. That’s not meant to be offensive it’s just a fact. Trans people identify as the opposite gender that they were assigned at birth. Non binary people identify as no specific gender. So saying you’re non binary and transgender at the same time seems contradictory to me and to Blaire as well. Some people are really starting to sound like Trisha Paytas claiming to be several letters of the community when they contradict themselves. You are part of the community and you face a lot of the same struggles HOWEVER you are also different and you should embrace that! Fight for your rights specifically as a non binary person.

It´s not just they don´t belong in the academic world is that they shouldn´t have social influence at all and the LGBT community should get away of that hate narrative that is hidding behind. Their ideological narrative isn´t going to create a more cohesive society is going to create the opposite, there are other ways of creating a society in which people would feel free to be whatever without having to asign guilt for having being born white or cisgender or heterosexual or male or a homosexual woman but white, etc... the words of MLK that were used at the begining go against every single ideological pilar in "gender studies". We need to stop stopping conversations to ask how people feel and start focusing in questioning our fundamental beliefs and accepting compromises. Anyone that believes that talking about the issues that we care about should be approached with a "with me or against me" mentality kind of thing is only a radical that believes that wither they are in posesion of some sort of sacred absolute truth or that their feelings mather more than other people´s freedom of expresion becase "privilege" or whatever other excuse for their egocentrism.

    • james howlet21 PERIODDD BLAIRE IS THE BADDEST ONE THERE AND THE INE WHO MAKES THE MOST SENSE. The (non-binary) in the yellow is not getting that trans in transitioning into soemthing. Non-binary is not identifying as anything. They are NOT THE SAME 😂😂

    • @@mariahmorgan469 Okay here is a lesson, when you are assigned to your gender at birth, you are TRANSITIONING from your original gender to non-binary. Is it that hard to understand? Blaire was oppressing Jamie and saying she wasn’t Trans when she was. It is hypocritical because she has said herself that she hates it when people say people aren’t trans.

  • I feel like Jaime was talking about being a transgender and Blair’s was talking about being a transexual. And since they kept using the word trans it felt like that were having two different conversations
