Making A Viking Bearded Axe (Skeggox) From An Old Axe

2017 ж. 26 Қаң.

I wanted to make a simple axe restoration.
But as I was grinding the axe head, I discovered many cracks. The head was very old and rusty but I didn't noticed when I bought it in a flea market last summer it was that damaged. I tried to weld it, and fixed some of them, but one was on both side and couldn't be fixed just by welding it.
I almost gave up on the restoration, but decided to make a Viking Bearded Axe out of it, cut the damaged parts and reshape it. And it turned out pretty well.
Engraving the handle was very time consuming but in the end, it was totally worth it.
I hope you will like the video.

    • Would you like to have a blacksmith video for the flintlock, or to make other machines, such as the 18th century Austrian airgun valve. Thank you, and how to let the iron is not rust, is a simple anti-rust method, thank you, I support you, your e-mail is how much, I was 992467756@qq.com, China's Tencent qq mailbox , I come from Henan Province, China, the name is any star.

    • The Redsmith You're welcome, Sir. I would enjoy seeing your processes on Japanese Kamas. ( hand-held 1/4 sicles atop oaken handles. ) Your work is appreciated.

    • Japanese Kamas...hum, that's a cool idea. Will see what I can do ;)

      @RedSmith@RedSmith7 жыл бұрын
    • The Redsmith . I thought that you might like that idea. Back in 2007, I made it as far as the Canadian Nationals, in the Senior Blackbelt Traditional forms. During the Regionals( inter-province), I employed the use of a set of kamas I had purchased, as my " Kata weapon of choice." I. placed 3rd in the division, but not before being taken to hospital, for one of my kamas ( razor sharp) stabbed and tore through 2 layers of my black belt my gi top and an undershirt, only to penetrate 1 1/2" into my back and missing my spine by 1/2". I got my medal, trophy and 12 stitches. Worth it.

      @petten33@petten337 жыл бұрын
    • Waow. Happy it missed the spine ! In my many years of training I never hurt myself as my as during my years of making. Tools are sometimes more dangerous than sharp weapons... Glad you're ok. Scars can be trophies too :)

  • I've got to say when I saw you throw it in the trash I choked on my Guinness a little. But, then you completely redeemed yourself. It has a fantastic look and that handle, bruh, the handle brought it together wonderfully.You, and people like you, give inspiration to others to step up our game and stop with the "I'll just buy a new one attitude". The more I watch on the old KZhead machine the more I am heartened by the fact that so many like you are taking up the mantle of a hands approach to life. It's just unfortunate that skills like this are not highlighted more frequently in the media.Well done.

Next time you have cracks in an axe use your angle grinder to grind them out then weld over.. welding over a crack doesn't remove the crack, you have to get in there and get all of the crack, then fill the grind area with weld.. that handle is sweet too!! Very cool Celtic style.. and the leather to hold the head on was a nice touch.. VERY WELL DONE BROTHER!!!!!

  • Awesome work, best of all of the making a Viking axe from an old axe that I have seen, and the only one with a properly shaped handle, most put a modern shaped axe handle instead of a roundish shaped on like yours! I love it!

    • Thanks for noticing that ! You're the only one so far ;) Thank you for watching and the kind words.

    • Question: wouldn't a slightly oval handle have been better, to keep the axe from turning in your hand? The rest of it was beautiful!
