  • The bagel example is a poor example. By taking bagels ahead of your turn you are literally preventing others from getting their turn and possibly their bagel if there wasn't enough. Surely there are examples where you can "bend" the rules and not harm others (get in their way)?? After all, if you'd been faster (worked harder) you would have been further ahead in the line

  • To everyone focusing on the “skipping of the line for the free bagel”, you’re proving the very point of the story. The focus is on the negative of the story and you’re having difficulties seeing anything but that. Take a moment and readjust your perspective. Listen a few more times and really grasp the point of that story. I’ve got faith in some of you 🥂

    • i think that its a multifaceted teaching. firstly, time is valuable. assess if wasting ur time to get something for free is worth it, especially bc a bagel isnt even costly or beneficial. however, try to get it before you decide its not worth your time. ive never heard of cutting a line peacefully esp to receive something for free, but thats why this is an anecdote and not factual.

  • 5:26 that is true. My nephew made it through; he was skinny and I am that aunt who wanted to cover him in cottonwool… but he was that person who looked out for the one on the left and right. Today he is a proud Navy Seal. And he told me: “Family and friends should be taught what the Navy Seals are taught… then we’d be a stronger unit.”

  • Before you excuse yourself inline and take two bagels: ask yourself Can I be the person who supplies the bagels for free? The answer is, yes I can. No need to take what you don't need when there is plenty for everyone. The story of the five loaves and fishes came to mind. (Not particularly a religious person) The moral of the story is, no need to grab or be impatient with what your heart desires, The Univers is in constant supply. Thanks for the motivation to believe in something different.

  • re: the bagels. The philosopher Kant, while often flawed, presented a moral argument that would be very applicable here. Kant introduced a thing called the Categorical Imperative, which loosely says that a thing passes a test of ethics, if everyone were to do it. So, imagine if everyone stepped up and reached through a line of people to get themselves a bagel instead of waiting their turn in an orderly way! Chaos. Simon has good words, usually. However, his illustration of the bagel story is NOT his best advice.

  • I am a bit confuse with what he said about the first part when he was talking about the bagel. He skipped the line to get the bagels, not one but two. In his teaching he said we don’t always have to follow the rules but just as long as we don’t stop someone else (not his exact words but I’m trying to paraphrase) what if the last person in line that waited all this time doesn’t get any because he skipped the line, isn’t that getting in someone else’s way? Hindering someone else’s progress?

    @dalinelightbourne4502@dalinelightbourne4502Ай бұрын
    • Would you say someone who deliberately ran faster in order to get in front of the guy who doesn't happen to be left with a bagel is getting in the way of them too? Hindering their progress in the same way?

      @TunaIRL@TunaIRLАй бұрын
    • @@TunaIRL No, I wouldn’t. Is that considered the same as him skipping the line though?

    • @@dalinelightbourne4502 They have the exact same effect. The last person in line might not get any bagels because of them. Isn't that what you were considering? Let's say there's 2 spots to get the same bagels. One where you can take your time, examine them and choose which one you want and another where you're just given a bagel and you go on your way. One forms a queue and on the other one people just get their bagel and leave. No queue forms. Would you say you're worried about the people at the back of the queue not getting any bagels?

      @TunaIRL@TunaIRLАй бұрын
    • @@TunaIRL I guess I’m looking at it differently. If he’s already in line waiting and someone skips the line versus he’s not in the line yet and someone deliberately runs faster to get in the line before him is different. I’m looking at it like I got here first..I was already waiting…waiting on my turn. They have the same effect yes but the way they got to the effect is bothering me

      @dalinelightbourne4502@dalinelightbourne4502Ай бұрын
    • @@dalinelightbourne4502 The person at the end of the queue could've ran faster. Or went to the queue faster instead of talking with their friend for 10 minutes and then getting into it. Or any other thing they could've done to make sure they get a bagel if they truly want it. Maybe even just go up and take a bagel.

Getting what we want in life should not take advantage of not being ethical. Most people just assume that sneaky in and grab bengals are not allowed, not ethical. They are the honest tax payers, desirable citizens. Bad tip for public but truly that’s most successful people take. They shed that part never want to mention it later.

  • Are there real Simon Sinek's conferences behind this video? - it would be great to watch them if exists.

  • Also, asking for help is humbling. It's not humiliating unless the other person is a jerk about it (thats what humiliating literally means)

  • The critical thing missing with this advice about reaching out to a friend misses the nuance of reaching out to the 'right kind of friend'. Reach out to the 'wrong friend' and you may end up in a worse place.

  • Also missing the point of reaching out to friends when lonely. Oxytosin is the neurotransmitter of connection. Recieving emotional connection produces oxytosin. So does thinking about our friends and reaching out to them. It the perception of connection that creates oxytosin. Dopamine is the neurotransmitter of seeking /persuit. More like domination than connection.

  • For the Lession 2: dr. Ignác Semmelweis (Hungarian Doctor), often referred to as "the savior of mothers," made similar conclusions in Europe. He is famous for discovering the importance of antiseptic procedures in obstetric practice in 1847, significantly reducing the incidence of puerperal fever and maternal mortality. He suggested that doctors should disinfect their hands with a solution of chlorinated lime before attending to birthing women, which revolutionized obstetric hygiene practices.

  • Rule 1- do what you have to do but don’t get in anyone else’s way 2- Oliver Wendell Holmes and the Black Death of childbed. Sometimes you are the problem; take responsibility. Credit and accountability 3- take care of each other like Navy seals 4- nelson Mandela- learn to listen, be the last to speak
