Impetigo Treatment, Symptoms, Nursing Interventions, Pediatrics NCLEX Review
Impetigo pediatric nursing NCLEX lecture on interventions, treatment, symptoms, and causes with pictures.
What is impetigo?
It is a skin infection that is highly CONTAGIOUS!!!
It tends to affect children ages 2-6, but it can affect adults as well. It is most common during the summer months, especially with school-aged kids. The reason why is because kids tend to be more active with play (meaning they bump and scrap their skin more than adults) and are in close proximity to each other to spread the bacteria around.
Impetigo tends to be found on:
-most commonly found the face (mouth or nasal area)
-but it can also be found on the hands, arms, legs
How it happens? A child experiences a slight trauma to an area on the skin (may be a simple cut, crack or scratch or allergic reaction on the skin from contact dermatitis). A bacteria enters this area and causes impetigo.
What bacteria are the most common cause of impetigo? Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes
Signs and Symptoms of Impetigo:
It will appear as a red itchy blister or bump that will leak and form a honey yellow crust. It can easily spread to other areas of the body and to others. In addition, it doesn't easily heal.
Nursing interventions for impetigo include: prevention of spread the condition (parent and child education), administering treatment (topical or oral antibiotics), monitor for glomerulonephritis etc.

hi sarah! i’m a foreign student, i just found out yesterday that i passed my NCLEX! this wouldn’t be possible without your help through this videos. i swear this was a huge part of my success and i’m really grateful for it. I found out about you 1 week before my exam it’s a bit late but i make sure to watch your videos everyday (at least 5 topics of those which i find it hard to understand ) and answer those quizzes making sure i understood the content you’re teaching. Finally i’m now a USRN thank you sarah!
i can still remember you teaching about transmission based precaution and a question popped up, which i know cause i’ve watched and learned it here. so really thank you!
@@genevieveblanca1175 Congratulations Nurse. I hope for the best too.
I take my women’s and children’s 1 hesi in 2 hours... I need to do well to pass, and I think you are helping me do this. I appreciate all of your videos and free content you provide to us prospective nurses, it is invaluable and just an amazing resource to not only provide further teaching but also point us in the right direction of things to study for our hesi tests. Anyways, if anyone sees this comment, please pray for me 🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️ EDIT: to update anyone who saw my comment... I GOT A 97 ON MY HESI!!!! For real, Sarah, if you are reading this... thank you. I want you to know that you have impacted my life for the better, and what you do is nothing short of amazing. I’m only done with 2 of my 4 semesters in nursing school but your videos are definitely one of the reasons I have made it this far. I know I’m not the only prospective nurse you have helped along in the crazy ride of nursing school. Thank you, and may god bless your kind soul.
Hello Mark! Congratulations on your HESI score! Thank you for the very kind comment and for studying with me. It really makes my day to hear that the videos are helping students. Thank you again, and Merry Christmas!
Hi Sarah, thanks for being so thorough and informative. Although I've been a nurse for so long, I have only come into contact with impetigo just this year. The doctor at my nursing home diagnosed a resident with impetigo and I swore it was shingles (it was only on one side of his face and was very painful). This goes to show that we as nurses are always learning. Hope you and your family are well
Thank you. :) Before I watched your videos, my knowledge was very shallow. You've made it to another level.
Another great video! I used your videos to help study for NCLEX and now as a new nurse, they are great for review!! Thank you!

I love you. I love your voice, your hair, and your way of laughing
I’m so glad you made this video! Because my daughter has eczema and she gets bad flare ups in the summer due to the bugs. But I have a question to ask you. My daughter has the black scabs on both buttocks but it’s mostly on the left side and I don’t know what it could be. I’m taking her to her pediatrician tomorrow so I can get it looked at, because I’m afraid for the condition to turn into steph!
thank you, i'm learning from this quarantine by watching med videos

Excellent presentation Sarah. Can this condition go airborne? Thanks!
Contact precaution. Not contagious after 24 hrs oral treatment.
I've had this from light to heavy last year and a half nearly, went doc twice and got anti biotic but keep getting it back (probably excema and scratching) . It's a nightmare.....if I dont have antibiotics or ointment, do I still clean each area daily with water as they tend to puss for atleast 30mins 🙄....and what to apply to skin in terms of creams if any?
