  • I had to take an IQ test for a psychological evaluation to see what accommodations I needed as a person on the autism spectrum. Before taking the IQ test and getting the results, I believed I was dumb and slow. I even believed that other kids were smarter than me. When I got my IQ test results, my IQ turned out to be 83 (low average). After getting the results, I knew I was stupid. As someone with a Low Average IQ, I do not act like the smartest person in the room. I feel stupid and I am aware of my stupidity. Not only do I have a pretty low IQ, but I also have severe Generalized Anxiety Disorder. As someone on the autism spectrum, I would worry about everything and anything. I also have reading comprehension and math deficits. Despite this, I did well in college because I worked hard and had substantial support. Furthermore, I loved to learn even though I had an IQ of 83. For instance, I would join my college debate team to challenge myself and intellectually stimulate myself. I also joined my college debate team to work on thinking faster. Because I worked hard, I succeeded in my first year of college when I got on the Dean’s List.

    • Due to the properties of averages, there is no person who is average in everything. In fact, there's no person who is exactly the average in pretty much anything (unless the average is 100% universal--i.e. the average person circles the Sun at a rate of once per year). So no one is *literally* average, but we usually give a bit a leeway with the numbers to fit people into "brackets" of average-ness. For instance, the average height someone can jump would be generalized to a number in centimeters without any decimal places, and anyone jumping within 1-3 cm of that range could be considered "average".

    • Lol. It’s actually a good thing to doubt yourself though when it comes to intelligence, especially mastering something. When you feel like you haven’t master something, you will either a.) continue to try to master in that thing, or b.) move onto something else, most likely the former of the two if you are a determined individual. If you do feel like you mastered something, especially very quickly, then you really haven’t. I’ve seen this at my work. A lot of first and second year members of my broadcasting group tend to feel like they mastered everything there is to know to cameras and broadcasting, when in reality they haven’t. People who have worked for 3 to 4+ years, like myself, tend to not feel that way, and often doubt their skills (speaking from personal experience on the doubting part). I know I am very skilled when it comes to camera operation, and I am dependable on my shots, but because I doubt myself so much, I notice minute things I do, and often work to correct them. So yes, I’d you do doubt yourself a lot, you likely have above average intelligence.

Everyone always tells me I'm too confident, or asks me why I'm so confident, but that's not because I'm dumb, or weak, it's because I state the facts, and I do my best to get to that level, so I can truly say I am. Put in effort, not words, that's a life lesson.
