  • not the flashy Spain without almost all its starters, but very sturdy in defense and marching the characteristic physicality of the US in midfield - this game is hardly consequential because both teams were playing without lots of its usual players, but it was a good showdown of the quality of Liga F and the NWSL - also, even though I don't like her one little bit, Esther's goal was really good!!!

  • 1:12:00 watch the passing. the one two. so simple. so deadly. The cross and the prefectly taken first time shot. Excellent goal . Then ... Listen to the crowd. In the Usa on a sunday, they go to church. In Europe, we go to football. Listen to that crowd. You'll hear almost the same in any European country at the mens game and increasingly at the womens. in national games and at club level. The Americans are spending their time hating on a 35 year old winger. We are watching esther gonzales score a brilliant goal to beat the top team in the world. Pay attention Usa. This is the New Football.

  • There is a season for everything people 👭. The US has lived its time in the soccer world. Other nations are catching up as well which is good in my opinion. In so saying, the US still has time to put things in order before the world cup in Australia.

    • Reports of the US' demise are greatly exaggerated. Don't write off the world champion over one game which had little if anything to do with what the US machine is able to produce if they have to. The rookies and second-tier midfielders the US proffered are hardly a measure of what the USWNT is capable of. So, hold your horses. Wait until Australia. Then let's compare how Spain and the US compare. Players like Athenia and Olga who are skillful in the martial arts will learn quickly that their foul antics won't cut it on the world stage.

I have start questioning whether we are overrating the talent we have. We hear over and over about certain players being the future of the USWNT. Yes they look good against any of lower ranked teams we basically played all year. What happens when finally face some top tier teams well we all saw what happened. @lesliesimon7491@lesliesimon7491 Жыл бұрын
    • You may have noticed that red cards are an absolute no-no with today's crop of referees. Even yellow cards were hardly seen in this game. That does not mean that red cards, even at a first serious and deliberate and pain producing foul should not be applied. They should but they aren't. And as far as the farcical use of yellow cards is concerned, the universal application that has evolved no longer intimidates players. This is because no referee in dozens of games I have viewed in which plenty of yellow cards were issued, was there a single case, in which a player's second grievous foul resulted in a red card. Refs are afraid to use red cards or are instructed by FIFA to keep them hidden in their pockets. This makes yellow cards totally meaningless.

    • Wow there being deluded and then there’s deluded with rose tinted glasses on . If you look at USWNT achievements in womens football they are hardly wins but gifts! For many decades USA had the only professional football league supported by the pay to play collegiate system whereas other countries had none of this and have had to build the leagues, infrastructure and funding for the womens game. The 4 World Cups that the USWNT have can hardly be said to have been won against equally competitive teams at the time ! So it’s easy to claim superiority in a one horse race for decades and the US were basically gifted these trophies due to them having the privilege of circumstance prior to the growth of the womens game else where in the world. The competition is only now becoming competitive and a plethora of European teams stand a chance of beating USWNT.

    • Danny. Quick history lesson for you. The Usa has a very good college system set up, which provides excellent players to the National team. Europe does not have that kind of a system. It relies on the professional clubs forming a Womens side , and the women get all the facilities, training , funding similar to the mens. So now ( since the last WC ) European teams are turning professional , and catching up with the Usa very fast. The England and Spain losses might be friendlies and in Europe , but , a top team will face other top teams anywhere and in any competition. That is the Usa's 8th game against top 10 teams in 3 years. England have played 8 top 10 teams in the last ' year' . Every game the Usa play will be tough ' because ' they are WC holders and #1 rank. Everyone wants to beat them. The difference is , now that Euro teams have caught up , they ' can ' beat them.

  • Horrible performance by the USWNT. No cohesiveness, no sense of urgency, Rapinoe and Horan both played lackadaisical. Rapinoe overshooting several corner kicks. They did not play like a team against Spain, and Spain capitalized on it. The US was flat footed the entire game and was doing more complaining and flopping around then just fighting for the ball and staying focused. Not a good combination of players. It was as if they hadn't practiced together in the positions they were in. Disappointing to watch.

I cannot, for the life of mine, understand, why this and the previous trainer were so hooked on and insisting on Rapinoe shooting all the corners. She has always been lousy at it. When she isn't playing and corner shots are spread out randomly between several players, we get better results in the aggregate. One of the great moments in American woman football will be when Rapinoe officially retires from the national scene. Let her do her grandstanding, her ego trips and her politics, but, please, get her of the grass for good.

Because that screaming little piggy gets her all nervous, and it makes the other little piggies go berserk. So mommy pig doesn't produce enough milk, out of stress. And everyone suffers. So. Stricter application of the official rules of the game would reduce the fouls. Another thought: There needs to be a distinction made between accidental collision type fouls and deliberate, hurtful fouls. The later show meanness, not toughness. They spoil the game because the lengthy goings-on when the medical support folks show up break up the flow of the game. Fouls are unwanted disruptions that contribute nothing to the enjoyment of the game. And remember, football is an entertainment medium. • @@I_Have_The_Most_Japanese_Music This is a bit long I'm afraid. As Julie Foudy spotted - Spain (mostly Real Madrid) played with a 5 back defense that often morphed to 3 as Olga & Oihane went overlapping down the flanks. Plus their midfield of Maite Oroz, Zornoza & Maitane effectively cut off US pipeline. With 3 CBs Spain congested their central defensive 3rd & blocked quite of few shots allowing only 2 on goal. Towards the end a frustrated USWNT defense went back to their "lob it to Abby" mode of 2015 & earlier. Very uncharacteristic of what I consider the most technical USWNT ever. One way to counter this is to employ tall forwards to take advantage of shorter Spanish defenders (only Rocio Galvez is 5'-8"). Surprisingly Sweden didn't start their 5'-10" & 5'-11" forwards in Stina B & Lina Hurtig respectively. Another way is to use both physicality & high level of technical ability like Barca had done since Real Madrid's birth in 2020. They have used Jenni / Oshoala along with their mesmerizing ball movement to crack open Real's defense in numerous games. However in last 2 UWCL quarters Real managed to compete with Alexia & co. by improving physicality that showed against USWNT as well. In fact in the 1st leg Real had Barca on the back foot for almost an hour pressing aggressively like a pack of wolves. One fact though - Laia Codina, the central defender who scored 1st, is from Barcelona. Extremely unfortunate that Spanish women football has blown up into a Barca vs Real Madrid issue.
