Lyrics:
I walked through the door with you
The air was cold
But somethin bout it felt like home somehow
And I left my scarf there at your sister’s house
And you’ve still got it in your drawer even now
Oh your sweet disposition, and my wide eyed gaze
We’re singing in the car getting lost upstate
Autumn leaves falling down like pieces into place
And I can picture it after all these days
And I know it’s long gone and that magic’s not here no more
And I might be ok but I’m not fine at all…
Cause there we are again on that
Little town street
You almost ran the red
Cause you were looking over at me
Wind in my hair, I was there
I remember it all too well
Photo album on the counter
Your cheeks were turning red
You used to be a little kid with glasses
in a twin-sized bed
And your mother’s telling stories bout you on
the tee ball team
You taught me bout your past
Thinkin your future was me
And you were tossing me the car keys
‘F*** the patriarchy’ keychain on the ground
We were always skipping town
And I was thinking on the drive down
Any time now, he’s gonna say it’s love
You never called it what it was
til we were dead and gone and buried
Check the pulse and come back
Swearing it’s the same, after 3 months in the grave
And then you wondered where it went to
As I reached for you but
All I felt was shame
And you held my lifeless frame
And I know it’s long gone and
There was nothing else I could do
And I forget about you long enough
To forget why I needed to…
Cause there we are again in the middle of the night
We’re dancin round the kitchen in the
refrigerator light
Down the stairs, I was there
I remember it all too well…
And there we are again
When nobody had to know
You kept me like a secret
But I kept you like an oath
Sacred prayer and we’d swear
to remember it all too well
Well maybe we got lost in translation
Maybe I asked for too much
But maybe this thing was a masterpiece
Til you tore it all up
Running scared, I was there
I remember it all too well
And you call me up again
Just to break me like a promise
So casually cruel in the name of being honest
I’m a crumpled up piece of paper lying here
Cause I remember it all, all, all
They say all’s well that ends well
But I’m in a new hell every time
You double-cross my mind
You said if we had been closer in age
Maybe it would have been fine
And that made me want to die.
The idea you had of me
Who was she?
A never-needy, ever lovely jewel
Whose shine reflects on you
Not weeping in a party bathroom
Some actress asking me what happened
You.
That’s what happened: You.
You, who charmed my dad with self-effacing jokes
Sipping coffee like you were on a late night show
But then he watched me watch the front door
all night, willing you to come
And he said, “it’s supposed to be fun…
Turning 21”
Time won’t fly
It’s like I’m paralyzed by it
I’d like to be my old self again
But I’m still trying to find it
After plaid shirt days
And nights when you made me your own
Now you mail back my things
And I walk home alone
But you keep my old scarf
From that very first week
Cause it reminds you of innocence, and it smells like me
You can’t get rid of it
Cause you remember it all too well
Cause there we are again when
I loved you so
Back before you lost the one real thing
You’ve ever known
It was rare, I was there
I remember it all too well
Wind in my hair, you were there
You remember it all
Down the stairs, you were there
You remember it all
It was rare, I was there
I remember it all too well
And I was never good at telling jokes
But the punchline goes:
“I’ll get older, but your lovers stay my age”
From when your Brooklyn broke my skin and bones
I’m a soldier who’s returning half her weight
And did the twin flame bruise paint you blue?
Just between us, did the love affair maim you too?
Cause in this city’s barren cold
I still remember the first fall of snow
And how it glistened as it fell
I remember it all too well
Just between us did the love affair maim you
All too well
Just between us, do you remember it
All too well
Just between us, I remember it all too well
Wind in my hair
I was there, I was there
Down the stairs, I was there
I was there
Sacred prayer
I was there, I was there
It was rare, you remember it
All too well

I was thinking about how this song is filled with feelings and sadness. Today I realized that we can get over people no matter how much we loved and how genuine our feelings were just because we deserve better. Today I listen to "All Too Well 10 minutes" and I'm proud of myself. I got over my Jake, did not find my Joe yet but I know I will. Thank you Taylor ❤️

  • When the original Red album came out over a decade ago, I was going through a painful breakup, and it really spoke to me and got me through. That ex and I eventually got back together, and got married. After 7 and a half years of marriage, and his countless affairs and betrayals, we just got divorced in September. I knew I would never be healed of this pain; but I thought I was doing fine and holding it together. But within minutes of listening to this song, it pulled out the darkest of grief and heartbreak from deep within me, in such an unexpected way. I dropped to my knees and sobbed with my whole body and soul. It just flowed out of me like the waters finally breaking over a dam. This song has allowed me to truly and fully mourn and grieve my loss. I keep listening to it, and I keep letting that grief out, and releasing that pain from my soul. Taylor helped me through that breakup all those years ago, and she’s helping me through the ultimate breakup now. She’s helping us all to process, grieve, and heal. It’s therapy. But, most of all, this song is a monumental gift to humanity. And she is a treasure beyond words. Thank you, Taylor. Thank you. Thank you.

  • I am just discovering TS and I am truly blown away. 68 years old and listening to her makes me feel the emotions of a much younger man. I grew up in the generation of Don McClean "American Pie". A really long song and famous for its notoriety and how it dominated the airwaves for one particular summer of days gone by. And her is this amazing 1o minute composition filled with emotions, longing, young love (of someone much older) disbelief, confusion, shattered, broken and it is longer than American Pie. Rolling Stones made mention of this and how Taylor Swift is a very serious and accomplished artist, who owns the rights to her own music. Bravo Taylor Swift. Not embarrassed to say I have listened to it many times, since I saw the recent Rolling Story about All Too Well!

Thanks to the upbeat tempo and beautiful imagery of the past, it’s no longer sung from the perspective of the disappointed 21 year old who was left waiting at her birthday party- it’s from a woman who is confident enough to share her diary with us in way that makes you feel she’s singing your own story. • I am 63 years old and from the first time I heard "All Too Well" it took me right back to a relationship I had when I was 29, 30, 31. Each time I hear it (and I always have to play it twice) I am that 29, 30, 31 y/o again. Now hearing Taylors version, this 10 minute song I am remain deeply moved & impressed. It touches me on so many levels that it is hard to describe. I can not wait to see the short film Taylor produced, wrote and directed. The first time I heard this song was when Taylor sang it at the Grammy awards and immediately I was struck by it. IT IS A CLASSIC. I'm a boomer and when I was coming up artists were creating songs on so many different levels/genres all over the spectrum. "All Too Well" is on the order of Carole King, Carly Simon, Simon & Garfunkel, Leonard Cohen, etc., classics all (damn right ok boomer). The memory of love never fades. Thank you, Taylor @/welldone

Regardless of whatever caused it and however long it takes, I hope that you have healed or will heal from that very painful and very enduring experience. Also, don’t ever let someone tell you that your broken Heart isn’t authentic simply because it doesn’t fit their definition of what a broken Heart is.

She went from being the young, heartbroken girl who cried anytime she performed this live to now being the empowered woman smiling in the recording booth because she FINALLY reclaimed a part of her life that definitely shaped her who she is as a person now. I hope this wonderful blond woman knows how much I love her and that I’ve been with her since I was channel surfing because I couldn’t find the remote and paused when I saw her sitting on a porch in a blue dress singing about riding shotgun. Feels incredible knowing that we’ve grown together and she sang me through every heartbreak, sang me into finding true love, and now knowing we’ve both found peace and have healed together. There’s nothing like it.

  • Just so glad I got out of this kind of experience when I had a relationship with this person who is 8 yrs older than me like more than 4 yrs ago. I ended it after realizing my worth since it traumatized me. Now, I am glad that I am no longer feeling any pain. I can say now that I have finally healed from that trauma and proud that I have moved on from it. I am now in a very happy relationship with whom I can call my soulmate and whom I love soo much genuinely as much as he loves me; I don't even have to try so hard, and he adores my weirdness and quirks as much as I adore him. He is for me "The One". For those going through heartbreaks and pain, you will eventually heal and come back stronger and happier. It may take weeks, months, and years, but you will. Just take time to love yourself and be with people who were always been there for you (family, friends). Eventually, when you least expect it, someone will come into your life and will be the best love of your life. Hugs

    • @@jamesfleming1155 the unfortunate truth is that honesty can be causal cruelty. I think it comes down to your approach. Empathy is the key, but if you no longer love someone and you think you're better off apart is it worth pretending to be broken hearted about it? People usually grieve the relationship in the process of deciding to end it. So by the time they ARE ending it, they've already accepted it.

To be bruised again & again by the one you believed to be your twin flame, the one you perceived as someone who thought you two would spend the future together. The way this song moved everyone back then, and still fills everyone’s eyes up, even now, even though many of us have spent the past 8 years listening to it every day. She did it for two main reasons - 1- she is re recording all of her catalogue to break free from the company that owns the rights to the original music , part of that entails alter and or adding new lyrics and 2- she probably had some additional insights about her relationship that prompted the song . be careful with adoration , it can result in a trap of unconscious bias resulting in poor decision making
