Tiki-taka in its simplest form is a style based on retaining and circulating possession of the ball; at its best, it generates stunning movement, fluidity, and incisive attacking football of great skill; at its worst, it can be sterile and tedious.

He knew that barca would have been better with possession due to players like xavi, iniesta and messi so he avoided having possession he went for gegen pressing which alows you to narrow the field as much as possible but the players should be well trained and fit for that thus u can see how many goals they scored as barca lost possession again and again , the 1vs1s were very difficult due to players like lahm, javi martinez and dante. • 2008-2012 was an amazing time to be a Barca fan. I had been a fan since 2002 just before Ronaldinho was signed and it has been a pleasure to see the blaugrana ascend the way they did. Conversely the Rosell/Bartomeu era has been the complete opposite. Watching all of that glory turn to dust under a stewardship that has turned its back on Cruyff and all the values he brought has been difficult. I really hope a new club president can be brought in who will bring back those values which brought Barca to the pinnacle of the game.

Some people say you failed to mention Dani Alves or Busquets, I say Victor Valdés was the piece that many other teams miss when trying to recreate tiki-taka. He is a pioneer that will be recognized in time with a playstyle that only Ter Stegen can reproduce to an even higher level. Also, I'm happy that you remarked that possession is a means, not an end. Tiki-taka is a slang in the Spanish speaking world which means that something is working flawlessly. When Clemente said that the selección was playing tiki-taka, he meant that they were playing good. • As a Canadian growing up in the Toronto area, having Spanish origins, as I teenager I witnessed Spain winning the world cup in 2010 and Arsenal playing throughout the 2000s. Now at 26, I think back to what were my big influences in football and it was indeed playing a lot of futsal as an adolescent and watching Cesc Fabregas at Arsenal and the Spanish national team. It's amazing how that style of play just transfixed me when I was younger... The sheer amount of passes done beautifully leading to a goal. Then it was players like Cazorla (who would forget that performance against Man. City) that captivated me. It's funny to think now about the Arsenal midfield with the likes of Özil, who indeed carried on that style of play somewhat, though I'm trying to pinpoint a particular moment when Arsenal stopped that playing of football.. It think it was quite late in Wenger career there when they started switching to a 4-2-3-1 that a lot of that was lost, with players like Xhaka, Elneny. I mean, Arsenal had Flamini to use as a defensive mid, but perhaps as their defence issues got worse since the 2010s, then the midfield started looking more defensive? What do people think?

    • Indeed Wenger was a pioneer of the passing game within England. I think formation and personnel prevented it from becoming full blown tiki-taka/Cruyff ball in the early 2000s. The Nasri/Fabregas/Wilshere days were a closer match and culminated in that famous victory over Barcelona. Perhaps ultimately what led to that later version not sweeping trophies was the lack of gamechangers as well as a lack of insistence on pressing

I think if they can keep Martinelli and blood a few more of the youngsters they can definitely be a top 4 team. If they can then go big in the transfer market nothing can stop them from challenging for the title

I never had this kind of coherent understanding of it's origin, strength and weakness. To be able to make it easy to understand for less intelligent person like myself is what I like about Tifo.

  • When talking about well known teams inspired by tiki-taka I think you should also mention the german national squad around the time they won the world cup up until the world cup in russia. They might have played the style to the extreme as spain or barca did but they too had a strong focus on possession based football.

  • The C in “tocando” should be pronounced as a k. And there is no exact translation given that tiki-taka is an invented word that resembles quick passing between players. i.e. Xavi to Iniesta (thats the tiki) immediately followed by an Iniesta to Messi pass (thats the taka) so on and so forth. Its kind of like an onomatopoeia where tiki and taka resemble the sound of quick passes. Therefore, a more accurate translation would be “we are passing the ball in quick succession”

  • I’m curious why the video is addressing things in a certain manner. Here are some things that stood out to me, for example: 1 How this style of play has its origins in total football. (Briefly) Mentioning Cruyff and losing the chance to credit Michels. 2 Why(!) pressing is the optimal form of defense using 443 and its playing style -> A high line with attacking football will require immediate pressing as the first form of defense. 3. How this formation and this style revolves around triangles 4. Failing to properly credit Guardiola for his (tactical) influence in the Premier League. 5 Losing the opportunity to properly credit Ajax and it’s academy. These are just some examples. I’m just curious and want to know the thought patterns are behind choosing some words while refusing to use some others.

  • Tiki Taka is a misconception. The concept is ''ElJuegoDePosicion'' that means positional football. 'Tiki Taka' as a phrase evolved when quick one touch passes interchange was observed by distant viewer who couldn't see purpose behind that which was to create overloads in some areas pf pitch or to utilize spaces arounds. ''You pass the ball, you attract opponents if you are press - resistant and technical enough you can disrupt their shape and structure and mobilize the space left behind and optimize the pitch either by expanding it to our benifit by quick passes or dribble during attack. '' -Xavi, 2017 interview ''I hate Tiki-Taka it's passing ba without aim, we don't play that way'' -Pep Guardiola

  • Loving the content but an interesting angle that would have been great to put in is that the tiki taka style originally was developed by Arthur Rowe in 1949 while he was manager of Tottenham. Rowe taught this style to Vic Buckingham who became Ajax manager and led them to an Eredivisie title in his first season - thus influencing the new Total Football style which Burnley also were successful with in the 1950s - again largely down to the teachings of Arthur Rowe

It changed football forever. Ever since then teams try and play possession football and pressure play but not as successful as that era.
