I'm building & repairing some forges at Pioneer Farms and so I ordered some new fire pots from Centaur forge. (www.centaurforge.com/Centaur-... )
Here's a quick look at the Centaur forge firepot vs a fire pot made from a break rotor.

  • Disregarding any of the "mispoken" stuff you said, this is a very good and informative video.

    • Thanks! It was very annoying watching the video and realizing I got break rotor vs break drum mixed up.

  • Very nice comparison. Very nicely explaining video and information. Can't wait to see more videos soon. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Forge On. Fab On. Weld On. Keep Making. God bless.

  • ..i lined my brake drum with broken fire brick and cement slightly forming a bowl. it did good for about 9 years, i guess it all depends on how big of a tightwad ya are as to what ya use...

    • Yah that's a good technique. I've got multiple people using each forge every week and I've found some real value in having something that is sturdy is pretty important out at the farm. For a personal forge I think you are spot on. My coal forge also doesn't have a great firepot and I don't have any problems with it but when I put new folks on it it causes a lot of problems.

    • Adding clay to the wall of a rotor will get you a nicely sloped firepot.

  • You keep pointing to a brake drum and calling it a rotor the saying a drum is deeper. The real issue with a drum/rotor setup is the rotor "hat" and drum face is a much thinner metal than the sides. This area is the bottom of said pot and will fail before the rest. Either can be clayed to form the correct shape and depth and will also preserve the life. And both can be built for pennies in comparison. I've made, bought and used too many different styles of forge over the years, including drum and rotor styles. I've even used a cast iron floor drain pot which i still use for my portable setup. They all have advantages and disadvantages but forging needs dictate size and depth of fires, not to mention the fuel that will be used in each, portability, cost etc. When using a metal container, a coke pot needs to be THICK, coal and charcoal can be thinner. Metal is not the only container available. I have a centaur "square" pot and find it wonderful though the prices are a bit much for the hobbyist. I prefer my side draft english style for all around but that is based on my useage. Your mileage may vary.

  • Another problem with the Centaur Forge fire pots is the bolt that holds the rod into the clinker breaker. Over repeated use it will either loosen, melt, or break off. I've had to replace MANY of them over the years and just did again on mine. It's seems they have a problem at the worst possible time as well, LOL.......

    • Just had one break last week. It's the first one I think I've had to replace. Annoying that the bolt head broke off.

  • Hello from Del Rio. I’m a novice blacksmith. What are your best selling items?

    • I've got a playlist for things you can make to sell. A lot of what's going to sell depends on where you are selling it. RR Spike knives, various hooks, fire pokers, etc all tend to be good sellers.
