You realize he used it because he thought it meant controversy in english right? Just like how some spanish speakers might use 'actual' for current in English because that's what the spanish word actual means. In english a lot of latin derived words have changed their meaning a lot.
I'm a German native speaker and also knew it. There is a similar word in German: "polemisch". (It comes from Greek "polemos" which means war).
