BMW E46 M3 Shifter Bushing Upgrade DIY (2001-2006 BMW M3)
►Within the linkage that connects the shifter inside the car to the gears inside the transmission, there are a series of bushings keeping everything in the right place. You'll need to replace those shift bushings with enough use, as they'll have gone loose and sloppy. Replacing the shifter bushings should make the 6-speed manual a much more enjoyable transmission as the shifts become tight and precise.

I recommend anyone who is deciding to do this on jackstands in your garage. Go through the extra effort to remove the exhaust and driveshaft. Trust me it’s definitely the way to go. I did it without removing and looking back definitely should’ve removed it and saved so much time and effort compared to taking it out.
Enjoyed clip. What a big job for a shifter. I wonder how often this part needs maintenance. Unbelievable how many chassis braces BMW uses in their cars

what is wrong with the website, i cant place my order. I have been trying to do that for few days now but no luck. I sent a e-mail but all the solution given to me did not help. the issue after the website was under maintenance few days ago
So is the shifter on my 550i the same as the 545
dude the extra load you put on the engine mounts is huge by not supporting that gearbox
Dude, the engine mounts see 300 lb-ft of torque of twisting motion with the heat from an exhaust and running engine and cooling system. Hanging about 60-75% of a 115 lb transmission isn’t hurting anything
@@5abivt go do calculate the total load due to engine weight versus the gearbox overhanging and then come back defend your point of view
I did most of this on my garage floor on axel stands. I stopped at the Bush that mounts onto the gearbox as couldn't drop the brace down (i assumed it needed a jack under it, which I didn't have) Not a nice job on your back, not at all. My exhaust is now making horrible noises because I think it's touching the chassis brace. Need to adjust that and check it isn't also blowing 😢

@fcpeuro I used to enjoy getting under a car but now I'm in my 40s it takes it out of me. I slid over gravels and nuts from time to time. I took my shirt off and it looked like I'd been savaged by someone or something 🤣
Great video. I have a 2006 m3, 1st & 2nd gear get stuck and won’t move when in higher rpm, but with low speed and low rpm can change them just fine. Downshifting is no problem. Any thoughts?? Thanks again for the great contents 🙏🏻✌️
Late but had the same issue with it being shiftable at low RPM, locked out at high RPM. In my case it was a sheared pivot pin that was leaving the clutch release arm dangling / misaligned. In turn it also destroyed my throw out bearing. Did the clutch and flywheel while in there as well, and there's a BMW stainless steel replacement for the pivot pin to remove the silly failure point of a plastic pin that requires dropping the transmission.
@@mettaworldelbow7104 were you just locked out at high rpms or would it also grind slightly? I think i may have a very similar issue
@@FailofWar127 If I remember correctly initially it would just lock out, but it got worse with time and eventually it would lockout + grind if I attempted to shift at high RPM. Was basically forced to crawl around shifting below 3k
just finished rebuilding my shifter, it was a cunt of a job, solo, on jack stands, laying on my back. I didnt remove my driveshaft though. Learned a lot and the shifter feels better now. anyone has similar experience.

Could I use 3D printed bushings for this? Would they wear out too quickly?
They would definitely wear too easily. You’d have to use some exotic filaments (meaning a $$$$ printer)
I was putting this back together and when I connected the shifter with the shift selector rod I noticed that inside the car after installing it my shifter know wasn't centered it was up and to the right when it was in neutral and I have no clue why or how to fix it fo you know what the issue is thanks
did you ever find a fix to this? my shifter currently sits so far forward I can't shift into 1st, 3rd, or 5th gear. Any help is appreciated.
@@tari9553i think u have installed the shifter rod 180 deg away..the shifter rod is bend..and need to be facing backwards..he has said it during removal of the shifter rod
