I can't believe I somehow missed this video by two of my favorite KZheadrs for 9 years. Thanks for nothing algorithm. This was amazing and single-handedly changed my stance on determinism and free will. My mind is blown. It makes so much sense.
whats your current stance?
@@TNRPISIQ I'm not entirely sure. Previously I was firmly in the determinism camp of believing there was no free will. Now I find myself leaning towards believing exactly what Derek outlined at the end of the video here. That random quantum events in our brain/body could be a form of free will, that not everything is absolutely predetermined. Though of course there is still the question of who is in control of that pseudo "free will" since it's been shown that one can predict the choices we'll make before we consciously make those choices. So perhaps there is still no free will, no real "choice" being made, but it's also not fully predetermined, there's quantum random chance involved and our brains make up a narrative to match that random choice and make us feel like we made that choice to give us agency in our story. Regardless, I'm fascinated by thinking about this all in a fresh new way now.
@@beegemanare quantum events truly random or are we not fully advanced to calculate that? thousands of years ago, the people might have thought the moon and it's position sky as random and here we are traveling to moon. My belief is we can't truly stick to one theory at this point. universe may be deterministic or not. I personally believe it's deterministic. but I also believe it's not deterministic so that I can somehow feel I control my life with the free will I have.

+Bernard Hazel no no no no. Can light travel at the speed of burgers?
To be clear, by "free will" I mean that your decisions could not be predicted with certainty, even if someone knew everything about all the particles that make up your body. I am not suggesting you have conscious control over your decisions as even current research shows we become conscious of choices *after* we make them. I've given my view on the quantum measurement problem but it's called a problem for a reason. No one has it fully worked out quite yet (or maybe this is as fully as it can be worked out). I am not saying that determinism is certainly false, but our scientific theories and observations as they stand today imply that new information is being generated in the universe and this makes it impossible to predict the future with certainty. Some day this view may be overturned. To me, for now, time looks like a zipper. Far in the future the possibilities are wide open, but with every passing second time zips up what might be into what actually happened.
Behold! The messy intersection of science and philosophy. :)
I love it! Sharing!

In some ways they are each others opposites, in other ways they are completely different things. Source: I've studied my fair share of information theory and thermodynamics in university.

I've always thought that we didn't have free will, now I'm second guessing myself
Even with that explanation we still don't have free will and just obey the to the randomness of quantum processes in our brains
@@user-wh5se3cb2y It is free becuse it is not deterministic. Randomness IS freedom. How else would you describe free will ?
@@whynot5757 Well, that's the thing. You cannot describe something that is contradictory within itself.
@@alvarodps28 It is not contradictory, it's just hard to grasp. There is a spectrum. The two (fictional) extremes of it are asbolute randomness and absolute determinism. Neither of them exist; becuse the universe, just as human will is between the two. Partly random, partly determistic, which is called probability. There is no definition of freedom of the will beyond spontaneity and randomness. The less predestined something is, the more free it is. If our will is not entirely determinstic, then it is partially free, which is free enough to me. And this is what free means, not something asbtract "I as an idividual decide independently". If your choice is (mostly) indepent, then it is (mostly) random. There is nothing else. No definition beyond that. The (partial) absence of causality is the highest form of freedom. If freedom doesn't mean that, then it doesn't mean anything at all.
@@whynot5757 Well, you can have that definition. Eventually the only thing that matters is that we are not the ones deciding independently, so I personally wouldn't want to equate a word as bold as freedom to probabilistic uncertainty.

“You can continue shrinking a file down until what you are left with is totally random” - this demands a better explanation.
i think he means "random" as totally unpredictable knowing the context around that file
My take is that, if there is a repetition in the binary digits of the file, you can re-assign the recurring patterns to another pattern with less digits. for example you could instead of using "qu", create another letter which does the same job. If you do that optimally, the probability of the next digit in the is the same as any other digit, hence totally random.
@@amiralipoor2974 You lost me after "qu." Can you clarify?
@@op_pls_nerf4495 In order for something to be random, it must be devoid of a cause. If we fail to discern what caused X, that does not mean that X is devoid of a cause, only that we, for whatever reason, haven't discovered the cause yet. Unfortunately quantum mechanics culture has developed an "out of sight, out of mind" approach to hidden variables: "I have repeatedly failed to predict X, therefore X is random." There is a distinction between conventional randomness and ultimate (metaphysical) randomness. A flip of a coin is random in the conventional sense but not in the ultimate sense. We know that, in theory, with sufficient environmental data, one could predict the result of a coin toss - it is not truly random. The issue arises when members of the hard sciences conflate demonstrations of conventional randomness with ultimate metaphysical randomness, such as on the molecular level. When they fail to predict an atomic event, they should presume, via Occam's razor, that just like the rest of the observable universe, this event has a cause; they just haven't discovered it yet. Instead they choose to presume the existence of metaphysical randomness without justification.
@@ericberman_ Just as the video mentioned, almost always "q" is followed by "u" in English. Then you are using two alphabets - that is you are sending two data points- for something that could be done with one letter. For example i generate a new symbol, and instead of sending qu, I send that. In that sense I avoided shrunk the data that I was sending you.

I want to share my thoughts as a physics graduate (only bsc so don't rely on me too much). You made an interesting point in the video about the fact that since entropy is always increasing we need more and more information to describe the current state of the universe which doesn't seem compatible with dereminism. But if you take a box with a gas that is filling only a half of the box, even in a deterministic universe you would still expect the entropy of the gas to increase, so It seems that information increasing with time is somehow compatible with determinism.
That’s one circumstance tho
@@ytkaci I just wanted to make the point that the fact that entropy increases over time doesn't disprove determinism
yeah but thats like saying an apple doesnt disprove determinism - its not directly related
In your example the increase in entropy is only apparent but not real; if determinism is true the state of the box at t2 could be described by its state at t1, the laws of physics and the timestamp ´t2´.
in a deterministic universe an apple wouldn exist. and you wouldn't talk and think about anything. infinite possibilities enable things evolve in the way we observe it.
