  • This is one of those projects you have to measure, time, and cost vs. buying some clamps. I’ll go with buying clamps. Especially the pipe clamps. They are cheap enough.

  • I think the way to evaluate this is to think of the final product as a special jig, to be used where there is a lot of repetitive work producing wide boards. But if it's for casual use, I would agree with a lot of the comments that there are perfectly ordinary ways to accomplish the same thing using conventional general purpose tools. This avoids the need to store a rather bulky jig and avoids having to wreck a perfectly good jack. In particular I agree with BeachSideHank that there is a danger of what I would call buckling, and what he calls cupping ? This happened to me decades ago when building a two piece top in oak for a refectory table in the old style. They did buckle, but for some unknown reason over period of months relaxed and the table top came flat.

On another occasion I tried to use a car Jack to pull out some deep roots from a stump near a concrete base, but didn’t work. So yes you can use a car Jack for somethings and not for other things lol

    @adrianbehennah744@adrianbehennah744 Жыл бұрын
    • If you wish to use a jack to lift up roots, I use a farm jack. But even that has its limitations. Great for up to 3" diameter 'saplings' provided... you have a good base to set it on, have the jack secured to a secure larger tree or even a vehicle with a chain (& possibly another person to pull or push back keeping it upright when it begins to shift and you're still jacking..) Many Tap roots, as on the sumac, go straight down and the older the tree, the thicker & deeper it goes so it's best to take out asap. Otherwise they may snap in two, and you may need to repeat in a few years. I once experimented using an engine lift with a wench. Again, a 2' or so sapling, ok. Wench could not handle bigger ones better than the farm jack. Maybe a heavier wench?

I always think it’s going to be some amazing tool and then it ends up being an hour or more worth of work to make a basic custom wood clamp out of a car jack. 😑

  • 40 years of wood working and this ignores the need to hold slats or planks flat. There will be play in the wood and mechanical restraints allowing the assembly to bow when tightened. It's an expensive DIY when there are purpose made clamps on the market too. Sorry, but no.

    • Some of the comments here are plain ridiculous and missing the point completely. If you don't like it, jog on. It's not about being easy to just buy bar clamps and saving the hassle of making this. It's actually, believe it or not, about MAKING this! Everyone has wood lying about doing nothing and most probably many have a spare jack lying about too so why not spend a wee bit of time making something for free instead of being a lazy, moaning bastard with no imagination?

    @roybixby6135@roybixby61353 жыл бұрын
    • You need to be careful though with the driver, the over excitement could send those panels flying. Sometimes I need to lift my heavy bed to place sliders underneath and that 600lbs bed corner can be lifted using this jack while tightening with fingers.

      @RingZero@RingZero Жыл бұрын
  • When gluing panels, it's important to equalize the pressure on both sides to prevent cupping, this method has no means to do that.

    @BeachsideHank@BeachsideHank3 жыл бұрын
    • @Neal Zalagens Even a few degrees off of square on the adjacent planed edges creates a ramp or wedge, which will translate into surface unevenness as the joints move apart under pressure, panel clamps sit astride both surfaces and greatly reduce or eliminate entirely this effect.

  • Needs greater precision. Even with a small amount of pressure, I can see that the fixed bar goes out of square. Consequently the boards will be subjected to vertical bending. Be very careful about applying too much force, otherwise you may have boards exploding all over the workshop.
