I love it when the KZhead algorithm comes out of nowhere and just hands you a gift. This is straight up 🔥🔥🔥
no shit!
Hear that :) 🌟
Right on
The exact second i thought that, is the same moment I read your comment!!! well done
well said..my thoughts as well..
Forget your well paid TV celebrities, You Tube is where you find true talent........the unsung heroes. What a brilliant version, and a superb mandolin solo.
❤🎉
People like Taylor Swift can forget about it. They aren’t this good!
You'll never catch me wasting my money on
the solo!!!
Your comment made me think of this Charles Bradley version of 'Changes' - kzhead.info/sun/rcqaf8pvZ39qq6s/bejne.html
I tell you, these young bluegrass players are the keepers of the flame. Sierra, Mollie Tuttle, Billy Strings, et al. They are the ones who are keeping the best music from the last 50 years alive. The absolutely stunning talent and range of this generation of musicians that are technically "Bluegrass " is so impressive to me. If you are not aware of them you should do your self a favor and look into what these young artists are doing. Truly inspiring.
Love the 'keeper of the flame' comment. They just don't write music like this anymore.❤
That isn't Bluegrass
@@Life-of-Bluegrass_Music It is now. It meets all of the requirements, so it's in my playlist now. Pretty sure Levon Helm would like it as well.
Check out devil makes three

I was skeptical. ... Don't come at this classic unless you intend to deliver. This song was there through tough times for me. After watching I just want to say: "Thank you for this performance!" - You definitely delivered!
I so agree! I’ve watched it at least 10 times and still enjoy it.
Absolute powerhouse of a cover. That Mandolin solo is perfection. I think tears for fears would be so proud and I hope they are. It’s amazing when an artist can cover a song and make it their own. This is like jimmy hendrix covering all along the watchtower. Incredible
Now THAT is a compliment, and I agree! 👍🏼
There is another version of this with Curt Smith and his daughter playing together it's very nice and acoustic
Tears for Fears, please show respect for the original artists.
I usually get chills when I hear the Gary Jules version. For some reason, the world threw this version in my suggested videos. I've never heard of Sierra Hull. I'm now a fan. I didn't know Mad World needed a mandolin solo. Now THAT was chills.
Yes, that Gary Jules version is beautiful and thoughtful; love it.
Check out her solo on I Don't Mind, with Sturgill Simpson, live
It's actually a Tears For Fears song.
Alison Krauss gave her her start. There's two videos of her playing with AKUS when she was 12. She was good then
Everyone should know who she is 🤷♂️
She has an amazingly controlled and expressive voice. I could listen all day to it. And of course that mando solo. Awesome.
Did you get a chance to hear "Years"?
Very well done love that it's all acoustic and yes, the solo was fantastic! and the instruments didn't clash with one another. Interesting that the Mandolin solo was very fast for a slow song. Kept it different and interesting
A sentence I had never expected to say, before seeing this video: "you've got to hear this amazing mandolin solo"
It certainly blew my mind anyway..
That mandolin solo far exceeded my expectations! Everything built to that moment so wonderfully. Magnificent performance. :)
Very nice solo indeed
Expectations on something you've never heard? Bizarre you shouldnt be expecting ANYTHING from a artist.
@@TheOraclearchive I disagree, for an audience’s expectation of what the art is going to be is one of the primary factors to how the art is received. There are many instances where artists submerse or exceed expeditions. That’s half of the fun of it!
@@ddragonwhistler ok. So what did you expect from something you havent heard before? It kinda implies you predicted how she would approach it.
@@TheOraclearchive I didn’t predict what her solo would be. But I sure did hypothesize. Music to me is all about patterns and deviations of those patterns.
Sierra's playing is so pristine and perfect. I love the quiet confidence she exudes. Her virtuosity is far beyond most mortals but she's never overly showy. It's 100% tasteful and melodic. You can see how much the band loves playing with her too.
calm down, shes fine
@@williedame4406 To each and their own..... She is more than fine; the last few minutes of this version, really shows what she can do but she lets her band mates shine a bit here and there through the song. I've seen her many times on KZhead, and she appears to have very little ego as she has played with so many talented pros and they all appear to love playing with her!!!! She has been invited to play with "Billy and the Kids" this week in NY, so I am trying to get tickets to the sold-out show, maybe I can get a "Miracle", and if not, there is always the simulcast on Nugs.....
I am always going to be enthusiastic about artists I love. Never calming down.@@williedame4406
I agree. She's an incredible musician without rubbing it in our faces. Such a treasure. Amazing human.
Cringe
When people create like this it is as close to the divine as we come
Totalmente de acuerdo amigo. Viva la música 🎶
Well said. Soo true.
The best version of this song...of which there are many.
As phenomenal as her mandolin playing is , and that solo was phenomenal, props to the violin player for some creative and perfectly placed atmosphere
Yes, I really loved that.
Yeah, I was gonna point out in response to the comment above, how she leaves good space for the other band members to fill-especially the violin player.
because she's a caged goddess
And the fiddle player too.
When it's country music we call it a fiddle.
I listened to this song in the early '80's when it first came out... Sierra probably wasn't born yet! It was a song of the times then, and her version is every bit as relevant and fantastic now. What a great interpretation of the song..
Ditto! Top 10 album for me.
lol why did I think this song was from like 2003?
@@UpvotesBlueGuitars probably cuz Gary Jules covered it for Donnie Darko around that time
@@reshmiya aye ur right, thanks
Yes!
real talent . just stunning. she has such a pure voice and a total star on the mandolin.
Oh when the violin slowly creeps in 😮chilly bumps everywhere!!! You know music is amazing when you get that visceral energy!!!
That mandolin solo is amazing.
She shredded that thing!
It's from another world, dude!
Me: Mindlessly surfing KZhead at 11:30pm KZhead (correctly): "You know what you need my man? A bluegrass cover of an '80s classic, with a kick-ass mandolin solo (yes, I said mandolin solo)"
You should see her in concert. She is the fastest mandolin player ever.
Her timbre and vocal technique are remarkable. The final solo is *chef's kiss*
Agreed! Both her interpretation and performance are exquisite.
I don’t know why I clicked on this . I don’t remember the last time I was speechless ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I know why i clicked on this video, it is because this stated 'Mad World'.!!! and i had to listen to this!
30 years later, rural america is ready for tears for fears.
The Cars, too! Tim Mcgraw does a cover of "Drive" in the last few years.
@@slofty exactly
Mandolin is such an underrated instrument. Love it.
You’re right. But especially when played and sung to by Sierra Hull
I enjoyed it. I used to plink around on a mandolin that was given to someone in the family as payment for room and board from a traveling salesman somewhere before 1920. It was already old then. My father used to play "Glow Little Glowworm" and his foot stomping shook the whole house! I guess it made him happy. I learned to play "Mandolin Wind" on it. It sort of looked like a half a watermelon with stripes on it.
fantastic for making slaw
@@alanthealienoriginal Happy Memories!!✌️
She absolutely kills it
She played this at a show and it was magical. Very unexpected. She is extremely talented.
I'd Love To Have Seen That!
The violin and mandolin solos bring so much complex texture out of this classic cover. Kudos to the whole group!
Holycrap! Her voice is priceless!
No words 😶 I think the mandolin lick at the end was the most amazing thing I have ever heard.
I agree! Sierra’s been a virtuoso since she was a little kid.
I agrre.I like this song.
Yeah, Sierra Hull is a young master
First Time Hearing Her! Truly Amazing!!
@@JLDB1987Is she from Maryland?
Real music, live, full of passion....fills the air....then its gone. In the hour of my twilight, this will invoke a tear.
Freaking amazing. Honestly my favorite version.
I absolutely love when two musical genres join forces to make something amazing. That's what this is.
She’s amazing. I love how she basically plays rhythm guitar on on mandolin until it’s time to go bluegrass.
That's a REALLY good description!
Out of my 57 trips around the sun i have never heard such fine playing of the mandolin!❤️
Everything about the way they redid this song was simply beautiful.
More proof that the 80's Ruled!! Glad to see a younger generation keeping music alive. Great cover!!
this feels more like a cover of the gary jules cover, rather than a cover of the original
I am sorry, but she extend it to a complete new and much more advanced level than the original :D
80s actually ruled by driving great music off the market. The best progressive bluegrass and country folk artists had to redefine how they recorded and did business. Sierra is descended from that generation--Tony Rice, Chris Hillman, Kate Wolf, Nanci Griffith, and later Alison Krauss. In the MTV-ruled mainstream, there were just a few rare good songs, such as this one.
A good song is…a good song.
@noahrosenthal6421 hot take: Jules version = far better than Tears for Fears. I think he captured the real soul of the song, while Tears recorded it in such a poppy tempo. It just seems off for the content of the song.
Never have I been more satisfied to watch until the end of the video.
Little did we both know she would rip that incredible solo towards the end. So glad I stayed, too.
My eyes got wide when she blew the top off. I was already digging it, but man! 👏🏼🙌🏼
This is the cleanest prettiest rock solid piece of music I've heard all day. Sierra & fellow musicians are deeply talented...thought I would lose my mind during the mandolin solo 😂❤!?!?
cleanest, the lyrics were wrong in one part so much that the actual wrong lyrics do not even make sense, other than that, clean
Well done, KZhead algorithm! You get a cookie.
Great songs can be reimagined. That's what makes them great.
Gosh, how is it even possible to play such a soulful solo on a Mandolin?
Mandolin solo is a first for me. But then I heard the Blues played on bagpipes earlier so, anything goes 🤪
If you think that’s good, go check out Chris Thile
I just want to clarify: that was GREAT! Just suggesting another Uber talented mandolinist.
@@Azamra18 I had tickets to two of the three Nickel Creek shows at the Ryman that got canceled in April because Chris was sick. Anyway, Sean and Sara decided to do a free Watkins Family Hour show to make up for the canceled shows. Anyone who had tickets to one of the canceled shows (which were rescheduled) could attend (until they filled up the venue). It was one of the coolest shows I’ve ever seen. What’s really interesting is Sara told the audience that she called several people to see if they were in town (or could get to Nashville) in time to play the show with them. Everyone she called including Sierra told her that they had tickets to the show and we’re going to be there anyway. Sierra ended up playing mandolin with Sean and Sara on three Nickel Creek songs that night. It was impressive.
@@charlesbolton8471 Omg 😳 Sounds like a dream
Sierra and the boys did this excellent song justice. Bravo!
The mandolin solo gave me *full body* goosebumps. 👏
achingly beautiful.
Beautiful voice and she rips her instrument.
Already a legend. The future of music is in very safe hands with this one.
Her voice and her talent playing mandolin deserves to be heard. I will be looking her up to hear more. FANTASTIC
Agree with those who enjoyed this experience before me - the edge of controlled energy needed for this song was well met. Thank you for a great rendition
I've never seen a person _attack_ a mandolin like Sierra did on the solo. Great playing all around. 😊
Jake Shimabukuru My Guitar Gently Weeps...
Sam Bush & Jeff Austin for a couple,.... but yeah, that was a tremendous solo!
Check out The String Cheese Incident and/or Leftover Salmon, if you like good mandolin playing. 😊
@@cbglassiii9362 Yep, Drew Emmitt!!! Love SCI too. Seen SCI the most due to a variety of factors.
Chris Thile - Dude is a maniac
She plays so well. Brings that mando to life. Bravo !
I lost my 6 months ago. Her birthday was 1-5 and I miss her so much. And this pops up. Now I'm alone and nobody hears me crying.
You're not alone. I relate and hear you.
God bless you, and keep you strong.
Poor one! I'm sorry you feel bad. I wish good things for you.
I do cry on brother
Tears for fears called and said you did it better. You get an A+
That was amazing. Everything about it. Lead vocals, her mandolin playing, flawless.
Just completely amazing - wow
Nice! Though it's really just a cover/remake of Gary Jules cover of Tears for Fears. It would have been cool to see their actual version of the Tears of Fears song
Beautiful. The blending of the mandolin and fiddle is masterly.
The skill involved here is very apparent.
How this just showed up on my FYP, IDK - but I sure am happy that it did! These folks can jam! New fan
A tight take and solid performance for all. BUT just when I thought it was over, that mandolin solo was a stunner -a real incinerator. I can't express how much I enjoyed that late surprise tucked into this cover. This post is a gem! Thanks to all.
Nice! Though it's really just a cover/remake of Gary Jules cover of Tears for Fears. It would have been cool to see their actual version of the Tears of Fears song
TRUE!!!
Agreed.
@@madpriest7822 Maybe if you asked The Internet real nice it would play you the Tears for Fears version. Or Jules' version. Or the version where David Gilmore plays it with his daughter. Most of the covers I've heard of this song (many!) are pretty good, _because it's a really good song._
again let’s admit old is gold and the present lady a diamond so ya
Amen to that...awesome effort from all musicians.
I'd had no idea. Sierra's a goddess on the mando, but she can sing too?!? And the girl can SING! Sierra has the gift, and we are all the better for it when she shares.
Haunting. A unique version worthy of the original.
I'm grateful to have heard an incredible mandolin solo in my lifetime! Something I've never heard before, and may never again. Thanks for this!
I love this song, but if u haven't heard an amazing mandolin solo, u might wanna check out Billy Strings band.
@@hobiegillis9453 or any decent bluegrass band with a mando
Wow- a beautiful rendition.👏
Sometimes KZhead puts something in front of me that I instantly fall in love with. Wow, just wow. I've never heard of or seen anything from you before now. Just a perfect voice that I'm going to be seeking out to see what else I can hear. Really hoping there is some acapella content. Thank you.
Wow. Unforgettable, timeless, classic.
Nice! Though it's really just a cover/remake of Gary Jules cover (donnie darko) of Tears for Fears. It would have been cool to see their actual version of the Tears of Fears song
She has such great emotional feel vocally and instrumentally. Amazing musician
The instruments and sounds and her voice are touching my deep soul
TRUST NOT YOUR OWN THOUGHTS TRUST LOVE🌹 GOD IS LOVE…OUR MOST GRACIOUS LORD🌹JESUS CHRIST ✨🌹✨🥂✨♾✨
Bloody fantastic!! Great control and dynamics from the band, such a sensitive lovely voice…. and killer mandolin solo…. I mean killer! Great work guys.
Delicate and powerful at the same time. Playing quiet is hard to do and this band nails it! In a loud mad world a soft touch sometimes speaks even louder. Nice job!
First thing .. this is THE best cover I’ve heard of mad world…second …this girl can play wow… it takes a lot to impress me.. but wow.. wow.. wow..
And this is nothing compared to what she does in her shows. You wouldn't believe it. She does this fast solo that seems unbeatable, then her hubby blows your mind, then she comes back with the most masterful mandolin you ever heard. Then rinse and repeat. It is mind-blowing.
The word word AMAZING is the only limit we humans have so far to express this but soon we will come up the elliquince to convay how GREAT this is . With mad respect rik
Powerful singer brought me to tears. Moving passion
Best solo I've ever heard on mandolin. Hands down. No question at all. Bless you sister!
5 people in a room, making magic.
Started out listening to Billy Strings and ended up here. What an amazing journey it was.
In all these years of KZhead, I have never heard something so magical! I can't tell you how exciting it was to hear every detail of this arrangement. And what a voice and mandolin! Absurdly brilliant!!!❤❤❤
killer arrangement, excellent musicianship. I’m listening now.
This is a version of this song I had no idea I needed to hear
Thanks Tears for fears but Sierra and band members, you take this to a different level. Thank you
Lovely version & so nice to see a mandolin "shredded"
Sierra is absolutely amazing, this band is incredible and it's hands down my favorite version of this song, and can we all show little love for the violin player, amazing articulations that were subtle and just sounded so cool. Great job. Yes, I cried dammit..
Truly Amazing Version!! Loved It All!!
Cried also
This is a very talented ensemble! Respect ✊
I only wish I could press the like button a million times and make that count!!!
This song always gave me chills, goosebumps and a feeling of not being alone in thinking that the World in which we live is extraordinarily crazy yet simultaneous filled with breathtaking beauty. I remember coming up to Christmas, 2003 and this song was _everywhere._ My friend's girlfriend said that she was sick of hearing the song on the radio because it made her feel depressed. I told her that not all music is supposed to make you feel happy. Even back then I knew life wasn't rainbows and bunny rabbits.
Nice! Though it's really just a cover/remake of Gary Jules (Donnie Darko) cover of Tears for Fears. It would have been cool to see their actual version of the Tears of Fears song
But there are rainbows & bunny rabbits Everywhere you look. I'm goin to sleep now.. 😴
In a world of such violence and horror I can Feel the emotion in this song. Great job, current and wonderful interpretation. It touched me.
EXTREMELY WELL DONE... So nice to see some young people with Actual TALENT...
Nice! Though it's really just a cover/remake of Gary Jules cover (Donnie Darko) of Tears for Fears. Besides that awesome solo at the end It would have been cool to see their actual version of the Tears of Fears song
Wow. She kicks ass. What a fantastic song. Sounds like the daughter of R.E.M.
Shredding. Ones of my favs, reminds me of SRV Live @ the El Mocambo, " Third Stone from the Sun". both of these are, true passion + talent = classic
Really enjoying this version, this kind of voice and any good mandolin play will get me every time. Listening again to them. That last part..... Where the violin kind of bridges the sound of the mandolin, really makes me lean in. Didn't know what it was I was hearing. Thanks for posting. I'd like to find more of their music. Update: Found her, Sierra Hull, subscribed.
...the way you sing it .... touched my heart ... almost in tears .... I love the way you sing Sierra .....WOW!!! 🙏
First time I felt this song actually meant something to me. Childhood memories came flooding back like it was yesterday. Awesome job.
Touching, sad, hypnotic and tragically beautiful. Great version! Thank you 🎉!
I remember I saw her place this in Davenport Iowa in like 2015 and she was talking about how she just heard it and was obsessed with it. I think I’m the same age as her and I found it sad she didn’t get the pleasure of watching Donnie Darko in highschool
I listen to a wide variety of music, and I have always loved Tears For Fears, but now the way Sierra and her band play this song makes me love bluegrass even more.
Love seeing / listening to young people who obviously put in the time to become skillful and lay down some awesome acoustic tunery!!!
I go back to this video, year after year.
I’m officially a fan of Sierra! 🤩
This song brings me to tears every time I hear it, weather the original or this fine version because by god this is truly a MAD very SAD WORLD.
Spot Collins
Spot on
Spot Collins is a character from the movie Newsies, Brooklynnn!!
that solo made me shed a tear as a man.
Absolutely beautiful cover. I'm glad this showed up in recommended videos for me.
Magnificent version of a truly great song about the harsh realities of the the world we live in Sierra's mandolin playing is always mindblowing love it.
as a singer myself i appreciate the approach she has taken, i think she is giving it a life of its own.
I clicked on this not knowing exactly what song this was but within the first measure I knew. ❤
Speechless... beautiful, inspiring. Thank you Sierra and company!
Blown away. Just when you think there's not a new and original take on a classic, here comes one that is just musical perfection. And man, that solo at the end. So good.
