  • I want to clarify something I said at 7:50. At this moment I made the case that the characters in G98 are a step up from the human characters in most Godzilla movies. Looking back, I don't agree with this statement. I wrote this video years ago, before I had gone back and rewatched the Japanese films. I appreciate the characters in them a lot more now. While I still stand by the rest of the video and my opinion on Godzilla 98 itself, this portion of the video can be discarded. Thank you for watching :)

    • This should have been the reboot of the Beast from 20000 fathoms, same references from the 1953 and also the creature needed a real Gender but for me it would be female. Zilla was only built for speeds, burrowing, thinking and laying her eggs in the Empire State Building. Just my opinions

    • To be fair, that joke is blown a little bit out of proportion. That's in Godzilla Final Wars, and at that point in the movie they keep throwing so many monsters at him, and he kills most of them in a few seconds. • King of the Monsters was made by a man who loves Godzilla Delvin and Emmerich have publicly stated they hate Godzilla.

    @Tareltonlives@Tareltonlives4 жыл бұрын
    • Tatuopolis who designed this version loves Godzilla, and worked closely with Toho employees on what this thing could and could not do as a creature. He went in a very different direction because he felt taking the old design and trying to make it "look better" was disrespectful to the creators of the first Godzilla. What's ironic is he did research and went back to the same drawing board they did when they made the first Godzilla film which was looking at Nature, and dinosaurs. So he came up with this design. It's still a version of the character. Toho calls this character in Japan Toro Goji and all official merchandise for the character is called Toro Goji or Godzilla 1998. Not Zilla. Because the two are completely different monsters. The fault isnt all on Devlin and Emmerich, Toho had the final say on the changes and they approved the script along with the character's traits. Yes they approved Godzilla being killed on the bridge as well. The rule was Godzilla couldnt permantely die, but they never said "A Godzilla" couldnt die. Which is the point everyone misses, since the last egg at the end of the film was supposed to be the Main Godzilla for the other two films. That's why Toho let them kill him off in here. Also Look at Shin Godzilla, it reproduces asexually as well just instead through cellular division and the anime films had Godzilla get blown up by a drill missile to the spines before a larger Godzilla awakens up. So a lot of statements on why people hate this Godzilla seem hypocritical especially when quite a few of its traits Toho has passed onto other versions of the characters.

    • @@jackepong6300 Yeah, and Shin Godzilla and the anime SUCKED

      @Tareltonlives@Tareltonlives4 жыл бұрын
    • @@jackepong6300 Toho rubber-stamped it. They really were in no position to object now: they had gone this far, they might as well have finish it. They had no control over the script. Once they signed over the rights, it's over. Origin stories are terrible ideas for a first film. A lot of franchises die because the first movie is one long origin story. And while the cartoon is vastly superior, it was made because they didn't require the budget such a sequel would have needed. And the script was not Tatoupolous making at all, and while the design was an attempt to be respectful, it tried to hard to be innovative while still being derivative. It didn't find the medium between the other Godzillas and what the rest of the filmmakers wanted. A designer needs the approval of the director and producer, and they were in no mood to try to make something faithful. What this Godzilla most resembles are a lot of the early 1954 designs; vaguely similar but simply not getting it right. A lot of 2014 designs were similar; trying too hard to lean on the T.rex or lizard or fish side of things. The final result for that film was a satisfying medium that was very different, but still recognizable as Godzilla.

  • I've said this a billion times by now, but ti's worth repeating: This monster/film far more resembles Ray Harryhausens Beast From 20,000 Fathoms in design as well as tone. If it had been marketed as a remake of that, I think people would accept it a bit more. But slapping the name of a character so iconic to a fanbase as dedicated as Godzilla fans is equivalent to putting Barny Gumble in clown make up and calling him Krusty. The kids are going to react...BADLY:

  • If you've ever seen the 70's animated Godzilla series from Hanna Barbera, one might notice a VERY strong similarity, to the point where you could call the 90's animated series a reboot of the 70's one. Seriously except for no Godzooky, exchanging the kid with a scientist, adding a French secret agent, and being set in the 90's and not the 70's, they're pretty much the same series.

It kept his iconic silhouette but included dinosaur features, and retained his iconic abilities like immunity to conventional weaponry and atomic breath. • The Heartless Hero 2077 Same!! Zilla was the first Godzilla I ever saw, so I have a special fondness for her. The design was what caught me the most, along with that I liked the way that Zilla wasn’t just destroying things to destroy things, but Depths has a lot of good points. I think that if Zilla hadn’t actually been marketed as a Godzilla movie, it probably wouldn’t have quite as much hate? I dunno. Rewatching it, I wish it had shown more of Zilla herself, and the characters were a bit of a bog to walk through XD BUT THE GODZILLA CARTOON SERIES WAS AMAZING THO! I’m glad the movie existed so we could have the series!!

  • People always overlook the other culturally significant factors behind Godzilla besides the 1945 atomic bombings. For any Westerner who's ever been there before, you know Japan is a very strange, peculiar place. It really is, folks. Beyond fears of nuclear weapons, Japan is also an island with a long history of suffering natural disasters too-- volcanoes, earthquakes, wildfires, and tsunamis. There's a larger sense of cultural armageddon embedded into the collective psyche of this nation by now. This is why Godzilla remains culturally relevant to the Japanese, nearly 75 years after Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It's also why Japan is a society that is so hyper-focused on advancing technology. There's a sense of an inevitable annihilation hanging over the populace that is engrained into the DNA of the island by now, and only a breakneck race against the clock to develop more advanced technology can save them. Ever wondered why the more modern Toho Godzilla films have an unbearable focus on giant robots & machines often going to war with the King of the Monsters, despite the rest of the world rolling it's eyes at the campy idiocy taking place? This is why. It perfectly encapsulates the Japanese people's dueling fascinations of complete annihilation and faith in human innovation to spare themselves this fate.

I liked the lizard like appearance because it was still him just slightly different, he still felt like a godzilla to me. I was upset and cried a little when he died but i still do that in the newer ones when he gets weak or near death because its godzilla and ive known him my whole life. I may not consider him to be Godzilla, but he's still an awesome concept for a kaiju that I wish got more exposure other than being mocked in final wars and his brief comic appearances. • Szlekane maybe Godzilla and Zilla have some Snake/Mongoose Rivalry where both kill each other's kind and it's sorta hardwired into each other to kill off one another like Godzillas would kill Zillas and Zillas would kill Godzillas perhaps Godzilla killed Zilla's family like his mother and the rest of his siblings long ago and he was the sole survivor, either Godzilla destroyed the clutch of eggs and Zilla was the only egg that survived or he killed his juvenile siblings and he somehow got away and maybe went into hibernation
