How to blacken steel (hot oxide):
A mixture of caustic soda (700g), potasium saltpeter (250g) and water (1,2 l)
The temperature of the solution should be kept between 120 - 140 C.
I keep the knife inside for about 30 minutes to get consistent black colour, you can manipulate the time to achieve different results, shorter period should give you dark brown or purple - ish colour.
Be careful - this mixture is highly corrosive!
Heat treatment:
-Austenizing temperature: 830 C
-Tempering: 180 C
Specs:
Vandal
Steel: 80CrV2
Blade thickness: 5 mm / 0.197"
Length: 370 mm / 14.567"
Blade width: 60 mm / 2.362"
Blade length: 220 mm / 8.661"
Weight: 550 g

    @Janosch_on_fire@Janosch_on_fire3 жыл бұрын
    • The reason is you only do the job once, I don't care about belts, they last long enough :)

      @BarbershopCustoms@BarbershopCustoms3 жыл бұрын
    • I was going to ask that too. It doesn´t make too much sense to work on a previously hardened piece...until I realized the amount of grinding is minimal. With that jet cutter machine there is very little material to remove....anyway what do I know? I´m just a metallurgist.
