The Future of Universities in a Block Chain World | Diane Sieber | TEDxBoulder
Universities have been central to intellectual and creative discourse for a millennium, and yet during the last two decades, powerful economic, technological and social forces have increasingly challenged their survival. Professor Diane Sieber argues that the future of the university may look very much like its origin: decentralized, just-in-time learning with flexible curricula and outcomes-based rather than credit-hour-based credentialing. In the near future, block chain technology will allow learners to design a personalized education that constellates inexpensive online resources and experiences, and to connect directly with employers through smart contracts. Universities that can adapt quickly will weather this change; others will collapse in the face of accelerating technologies and less expensive alternatives. Diane Sieber is a professor in the Engineering College at the University of Colorado, where she lives in a student residence hall with global engineers who speak many foreign languages. She also inhabits the intersection among information technologies, history, philosophy, literature, online games and punk rock. As Faculty Director of the Engineering Honors Program at the University of Colorado Boulder, I appreciate the needs of our students and alumni to have access to "just in time" learning in verifiable ways that establish skills and learning. Industry leaders are constantly talking about the need for targeted supplemental education. I also enjoyed situating the current moment of change within the historical context of the genesis of the modern university.

Hi Diane! I just stumbled upon this talk while doing some research into online learning. With your background in language education, do you have any advice about good ways to incorporate oral communication (not just KZhead presentations uploaded by students, but spontaneous listening and speaking) into an online language classroom, which would also correspond to the idea of “just in time” education?
Education was one of the few sectors that underwent little change in the era of internet. And that is slowly changing now with the proliferation of the idea of "free knowledge". While the formal education offers an experience that is unmatched by the internet's counterpart, one can gain the same information (and more) from the internet at zero cost. But this matters less and less as we move forward. The format of traditional university education might has survived the industrial revolution. But I agree and think it's time that it started evolving to provide the "just in time" learning that everybody needs, and are asking for, right now.
I have watched this many times over the past 4 years....and now...it reminds me of what's happening in the crypto space and what is happening in some of the DAOs I'm a part of, Diane is Incredible for sure! 1000%

Universities have shot themselves in the foot by gearing to the lowest standards. Exams stress you - no more exams, lectures too? ok we'll make videos you don't watch, then they don't know their discipline when you graduate and have to work in a call centre. But who's going to pay for research? Or even courses at such a low standard.
College tuition fees will be paid in CRYPTOCURRENCY...HAHA...BITCOIN WILL REPLACE DOLLAR SYSTEM....
