Door To Hell
If you’ve read Dante’s inferno, then you probably have some idea of what hell might look like. What if we told you we have a location for it? This is the door to hell. And if you don’t want to scare the kids, let’s call it Turkmenistan’s Darvaza Crater. The crater which is 69 meters wide and 30 meters deep wasn’t always on fire, at least not until 1971. So who set it alight? Humans, duh!
The most accepted theory is that a bunch of soviet scientists set it on fire to burn off the poisonous gases after the ground collapsed under a drilling rig. The point is, there is a hole on earth that has methane being ejected out of it at insanely high pressure. And in 2013, some guy with a death wish ventured into it and Nat Geo was there to film the whole thing! The project took 18 months to plan and George Kourounis was even set on fire a few times to prepare him for the crater beforehand!
Shy Trees
There are two types of people in the world, introverts, and extroverts. But what about plants? Are they introverts? Well, black mangrove and lodgepole pine are! a few explorers saw something spectacular when they looked up at the tall trees. In some species, the top canopy of trees doesn’t touch at all. In fact, their leaves and branches grow in a perfect puzzle-like pattern that looks like it was designed by hand.
Scientists call it crown shyness, and if you look closely, they form spaces like canals. Why do trees technically practice social distance, though? It could be for the same reason humans do, disease. When branches don’t touch, harmful insects and other diseases can be passed to the neighboring tree. Another theory is that this allows for all the trees to receive an equal amount of sunlight. Even the trees have more equality than us.
