Artificial intelligence and algorithms: pros and cons | DW Documentary (AI documentary)

Developments in artificial intelligence (AI) are leading to fundamental changes in the way we live. Algorithms can already detect Parkinson's disease and cancer, and control both cars and aircraft. How will AI change our society in the future?
This documentary journeys to the hot spots of AI research in Europe, the USA and China, and looks at the revolutionary developments which are currently taking place. The rapid growth of AI offers many opportunities, but also many dangers. AI can be used to create sound and video recordings which will make it more and more difficult to distinguish between fact and fiction. It will make the world of work more efficient and many professions superfluous. Algorithms can decide whether to grant loans, who is an insurance risk, and how good employees are. But there is a huge problem: humans can no longer comprehend how algorithms arrive at their decisions. And another big problem is AI’s capacity for widespread surveillance. The Chinese city of Rongcheng is already using an AI-supported 'social credit system' to monitor and assess its citizens. Does AI pose a danger to our personal freedoms or democracy? Which decisions can we leave to the algorithms - and which do we want to? And what are AI’s social implications?

Do you not find it strange that this German "journalist" went instead to China to do a hatchet job for "privacy"? Is it really surprising that when it's about medical uses of AI, he went to the silicon valley, as if the place isn't dripping with privacy violators such as the "do no evil" google. Oh that's right, the difference is that, in silicon valley, the companies have sophisticated lawyers who will hand this reporter the slap in the face he deserves. P.S. In case anyone brings up the google interview, aired in the latter part of the interview, well, the "reporter" missed so many "so is shen zhen sick?" opportunities in that segment, didn't he? After all, if he can jin up political zingers over shen zhen's hospital occupancy rates, then surely he can jin up some similarly "thought provoking" and provocative questions for the american representatives

  • As a student in the medical field, its hard to not notice a growing buzz around AI in healthcare. AI has is being labeled as a game-changer in how healthcare providers diagnose, treat, and even manage medical conditions. The ability AI technology has to analyze data and from that identify patterns, makes it so clinicians can get almost instantaneous treatment plans and advice. I loved how the video mentioned one of the most promising aspects of AI in healthcare is the ability to analyze large amounts of patient data quickly and accurately. AI algorithms, give medical professionals a way to analyze electronic health data to identify trends and patterns that may not have been seen by the human eye. We can just imagine the impact that this is having and will continue to have. It is going to lead to quicker and hopefully more accurate diagnoses, which will hopefully free up some time for physicians so they can make a more tailored treatment plan. This growing promise in improving patient care by providing personalized medicine will hopefully lead to less and less people taking years to be able to find a diagnosis. Hopefully, we can get to a point where clinicians will always be able to tell a patient what is wrong. With the amount of data that is being anaylized by AI and how quickley it can do it, hopefully it isn’t too far into the future. There is a caviot to all of this though. How do we know that AI will take in all peramiters of human health? For example, a physician can walk into the room and have all of their senses help come up with the diagnosis, AI requires everything to be inputed into its data base to make a conclusion. Also, how can we trust the information that AI is gathering? Is it using sources where people can put information on that hasn’t been verified by more reputable sources. I believe there are so many great and wonderful things that AI is doing and will continue to do, but I also believe that if we aren’t carful in monitoring and limiting AI, there could be a lot of destruction in the healthcare world. Patients should understand that at the end of the day, it is their physician who his treating them, not a super computer. Although, AI may play a vital role in the physician being able to come up with the information they need, they will be the ones who ultimately make all of the medical decisions.

  • To my EFL teacher: Like any change in anything, everything always goes through a stage of integrating it into society. Regarding AI, I think that this is an inevitable process and it will not be without problems. There are also issues of copyright and copying the voices of famous voice actors. I take it for granted as a process of all these integrations and it's interesting to watch. But there is one drawback that it seems to me will be difficult for any AI to overcome, and this is making any decisions where the cost of error is high. Any use of AI to make important decisions without human participation is associated with risk, and this indirectly includes automatic control of a car. It seems to me that the use of AI will be limited to mostly being an auxiliary tool.

    • Are you sure about 5 minutes? How many percentage of people are willing to let go of 5 minutes of waiting for a chance to speak to a cashier? And can that percentage of people sustain the supermarket paying the salary of those cashiers? Let's say, because of not paying people to be cashiers (and maybe even stockers as they are replaced by robots), the automated supermarket can cut prices. Suddenly, weekly groceries from an auto-supermarket is, say, $150 compared to $200. How many percentage of people are willing to pay that difference for a chance to speak to supermarket workers? Can those percentage sustain the traditional supermarkets with their reduced customer base? I notice in Europe that many supermarkets now already have scan-yourself checkouts, reducing the need for cashiers (still there for elderly people who don't want to learn or foreign tourists). Fast food restaurants reduced cashiers with their touch screen boards. And more and more people use those facilities. Hell, even where I'm at in Jakarta, new fast food restaurants have touch screen boards to order menus. Even with a much lower minimum wage than more advanced countries, it still is a big saving for them to reduce human workers. It doesn't have to be terrifying. We don't bat an eye ordering airline tickets online nowadays, when 50 years ago you would still have to go to a travel agent or give them a call to get an airline ticket. I don't miss going to the music store to talk with the store clerk, and I don't miss having to talk to anyone to order pizza delivered to my house. It's just a matter of getting used to it. Or maybe I'm just more introverted than most. :D

Instead of how it is today, where I had to go to trade school for 2.5 years to get certified to fix cars....just to not make any money because the garage takes 90% of what you pay for repairs. But at the same time, its "fiction" because car companies will do like Hyundai and make the cars "not worth repairing" so it gets replaced instead of repaired, or like the Germans, where if you want your Mercedes repaired, you have to take it to someone that has all the special tools and codebooks to swap out the piece without messing anything else up. Also, cell phones benefit from "human protections". When you are hiding from the rain, so is your phone. When you are indoors away from the cold or extreme humidity, so is your phone. Cars do not have this luxury, and from the day they leave the factory, they will spend virtually their entire lives under the hot sun and under the cold moon. In the rain, in the snow, in the salt. Any kind of "self repairing module" attached to a car would itself be subject to the same environmental conditions and would have a finite lifespan. Nothing replaces the simple joy of buying carrots from the farmer who grew them, of getting fresh raw milk still warm from the cow. All this packaged crap is fine for robots to dispense, but is that robot going to share an old family recipe? Anyway, we as humans still have a long way to go when it comes to perfecting AI technology. People should understand that perfecting machine automation first is one of the keys to building an actual AI and building an “unrefined AI” with the current technology right now will only spell disaster to human existence. Think of an entity with an ability to continously learn non stop then put it on a machine (a far more durable vessel with a more fixable state than a blob of flesh) and a completely voided morality. 🤷🏻‍♂️
