  • The real purpose of the pointed toe is to stomp bugs in tight corners. That's why the are called CBKs (Corner Bug Killers).

    • If this is true, it’s pretty smart. Wonder if it would’ve hurt your feet though

    • The pointed toe didn't come around until the 1920s or so I've read and was a movie invention. Around here we call them roach killers but they were to help get the foot in stirrups and help it come out if thrown. Or so I've read and seen on other channels.

  • this is truly the coolest channel! It's obvious you put a lot of time into editing. and I still have a pair of cowboy boots I bought in NYC in 1987, with the pointed toe, fancy stitching, and I tucked my jeans INSIDE the boots. Living in New Jersey. That was my cowboy phase. I paaid $125 for the boots--30 years ago! There in my basement full of mold, but I can't part with them. They are like ancient artifacts to me. Thank you for this little history lesson👍

Mine in harsh conditions worn every day ( oiled every day in the winter with pig fat) last about a year and a half. Then I re-heel them with industrial conveyor belt material.( Very tough stuff).

If you wanted shoes or boots fitted to your feet, you went to a local shoemaker or cobbler for custom made boots.

  • It's in most of the Westerns, if you want to leave a man for dead, take his guns and his boots. That works for everyone but the main character. But, the first thing the main character will do is find some boots and guns. So, boots are pretty darn high on the list.

  • Most people in the 19th century and early 20th century wore their pants inside their boots, despite that being seen as improper for cowboy boots by some nowadays.

    • I got that info from the Art of The Cowboy Boot by Tyler Beard. One resource actually says that they didn't appear on cowboy boots until the 1950's. If you have a source that puts them earlier, please let me know. I'm always willing to learn new stuff!

      @ArizonaGhostriders@ArizonaGhostriders6 жыл бұрын
    • Arizona Ghostriders the same source says round toe boots were around in the 19th century. I meant round toe boots, such as the medium round, sorry. This is true, according to Lucchese, snip toe or point boots came about during the 30s-40s when boots started moving away from functionality and more towards fashion. Hollywood stars would wear these flashy clothes and boots (enter Roy Rogers) and if you look very far on the internet youll find snip toe boots were very popular, and very colorful, at the time. Point toe boots do help you find the stirrup but I think theyre more of a dressy style than anything else, as you dont need a flashy looking snip toe pair of boots to ride a horse, and I wouldnt wear my best pair to go riding in the mud and, well, "other stuff" on the ranch. Ranch work can be pretty dirty, and you dont want your nice pair of boots to get dirty or beat up. Stitching on the uppers of boots started to prevent the boots from sagging around the ankles, a common sight among boots from the War Between the States, which cowboys used quite a bit before they could buy a custom pair,but later decorative stitching came in.Boots were somewhat of a status symbol, much like the saddle. So those that could afford it would have a nice pair to go into town with and such. Square toes have been around since the days of old... even knights wore them. They have made a huge comeback, but I think wide square toes don't look too great so I wear medium round. I dont think the cutter toe was around yet, but many boot makers of the West had their own styles of heels and toes, with the cuban being most common. After the 60s the taller heels went out and the lower profile boots came in, but snips were popular during the 80s, after the release of "Urban Cowboy". This transformation from colorful with a higher heel to brown/black with a lower heel may have brought about the block heel, square toe seen on so many boots today. What the "real" or working cowboy crowd wore in the 1930s onward is unknown to me, as so many people wore them its hard to get information on what the cowboys wore, as so many records of this are gone or are yet to be found. Sorry for all the run on sentences, haha. Happy Trails, ~MC
