  • Martijn...you need to get your fruit trees in. They can be growing to maturity while you are finishing the place. It takes several years to get even a first small harvest. Fall is THE BEST time to plant trees (despite what everyone thinks; spring planting means a lot of extra care all summer long). I will bet you are zone 5-6 so you could have cherry trees, apple trees, pear trees, mulberries, maybe a nectarine, plums, and grapes as well as nut trees like walnuts, hazelnuts etc. For a small initial investment and a little bit of care in spring and fall you can have a virtually endless supply of fruit and nuts (for both you and your little chickens) that will taste far better than anything you can purchase and return massive yields for almost no effort on your part. I see how much you like the raspberries...and this would be like that times 100 in term of adding something nice to your life. 🙂 🐥 🍎

    • You can fence directly around the tree while it is little. Yes, correct. It would take just one stray goat to totally destroy the entire orchard. @@stuartdow7698 Its just that if he waits until later, it will be like 10 years before he is self sufficient.

    • But I think walnut trees need to be far from other fruit trees as their roots emit chemicals that can interfere with, stunt or kill other fruit trees.

With the intend of avoiding the well known, posh and often crowded resorts, we came upon a small village by the sea in 2014 that we love and return to every year at the same time. We have made a number of friends here including small business owners and working people who have been so incredibly welcoming, helpful and generous. I’ve worked in the building trades most of my life and fully appreciate the challenges of your current endeavor including the planning, imagination, hard labors, focus and dedication required. Your additional work of documenting, editing and sharing the experience with others is well beyond exceptional and my respect and admiration of your chosen life and artistry is enormous. Carry on, sir. By all means, please do carry on. 😊

Having watched your vlog from day one, never have I ever imagined that this place can be transformed in a major way without destroying the original structure, this is quite an achievement and I can't wait to see what's next. He works so hard he really deserves our support, and all the people who travel to help him build his dream. I cannot believe how hard he works, then films it all so artistically, then edits it beautifully adding the gorgeous music....if I was 50 years younger I'd be out there helping, just to be there in person, to see this place come together. Amazing...

That environment presents a survival mode mentality and until one has been established, building picnic tables, verandas for tents and videoing day hikes are secondary to a source heat and secure shelter. Sorry no thumbs up.

  • It is wonderful to see the very friendly and affable Johannes again. The cabin is coming along in leaps and bounds of late. It is always the beginning that is the most difficult, but get it right and everything else will follow. I admire your tenacity, patience and adherence to doing things right so that everything afterwards is comparatively easy, or at the very least, easier. Not that it is ever simple, of course. I am glad that someone (Tomas in this instance) has cut the grass as newly sown grass needs to be cut so that it will thicken and be hardier. That in itself was a necessary job and a job well done.

Do a balance walk on a high beam, crawl across a wobbly board with one end perched on a thin rock ledge, now stand on the narrow ledge, with an electric chisel, from which a cord dangles and plugs into an extension box from which another cord dangles. Now turn on the electric chisel and start chipping away at the ledge you are standing on. Hilarious!

  • Dear Martijn. I already wrote about this once, but it seems it’s time to remind you about the tent. In the winter, before snowfalls and rains, the tent must be covered with a plastic cover so that water and snow can easily roll off the roof. This will improve your quality of life. I hope you take care of yourself and do this. I wish you health and prosperity.

Great work by all, nice seeing the super grass seed you put down being so lush and needing trimming already, and that massive masonry stove being set up inside with all of the fittings ready to be set. Now, about those critters and their bells----you have the patience of Job to not go out of your mind with the incessant "music" driving thoughts and plans out of your mind. Still, it's nice to see them (not hear them) being herded back and forth and to see those wonderful dogs doing their jobs. Yup, a fine way for me to start my week (and a new month) seeing the progress and just thinking of you without the tent in the background boggles my mind. • I am curious why the goats and cows each has to have a bell around its neck. That must be deafening to the poor creatures. Is that so the herder can easily locate a lost animal if it strays from the herd and happens to fall off the ravine?

  • Very laborious and intensive work yet Finn and Tomas were up to speed in no time in helping with the work. It continues to amaze me as to how the people who join you in completing the process are all top notch workmen and ladies. Good luck on a continuous journey with this project in life. That being written, it’s simply meant that you no doubt are already planning future endeavors to fill your time.

  • The videography on this episode was insane! In the dusk fire roaring, talking with friends, the tent door view with cheese and ales looking onto the mountains, sitting on the cliffside feet hanging over the edge sun rays dappling in, AMAZING!!!!! I hope this project is never complete so I can watch these forever!

  • Have any of you Martijn fans found any other channels even half as good as this? Serious question! I've binge-watched Martijn whilst feeding my newborn the last few weeks and I'm now up to date.. I could do with something else as classy as this. Apart from the stunning filming and clever direction, I particularly love that there is no gratuitous narration explaining "so what I'm doing here..." when it's clear what's going on ..!! I would love your recommendations for other similar channels - or is Martijn truly one of a kind? Thanks all, greetings from Manchester UK.

The fact I've completely almost isolated myself and don't watch much TV anymore and just shake my head over Most that pops up on KZhead or any streaming/orvideo sharing...not much wholesome stuff to watch anymore. Great work coming along on that cabin...keep up the wholesome videos, Martjn. God Bless

  • Just want to say, its nice to see those big horns on the goats. Goats use their horns to cool down in hot weather, to itch scratches and for social interaction. Too many people dehorn or "disbud" their baby goats, a cruel practise, because they've been misled into thinking its necessary for the safety of people or other goats. All of my goats have horns (dairy breed), and like this lovely herd in the alps, we don't have issues with safety, and the goats are much happier
