XTool D1 DIY Laser Enclosure that fits the stock Honeycomb Bed
The XTool D1 laser is one of the best diode-based laser engravers available in 2022. Using them indoors without ventilation leaves smoke rolling about your workspace. So it was time to make a custom-built enclosure to contain the smoke and vent it out using an inline fan and 4-inch flexible hose. We also built this enclosure around the optional XTool honeycomb bed. This bed helps improve airflow around your material to keep cuts clean.

I will gladly buy a box from you brother, I am a totally and permanently disabled Vet and have virtually no carpentry skills.
Your exhaust fan should be as close to the outside vent as possible. What you have now puts positive pressure on the hose, so any tiny leaks blow smoke into the room. If the fan is at the outside vent, the hose is under negative pressure, so the worst that a leak does is suck a little room air into the hose.
You are correct, I only had it set up that way for the video while on my workbench in the shop. Inside I have the fan just before the wall vent outside.
Very nice enclosure design. Definitely the best I've seen so far
Thank you very much
Ya, I love it. Wish you did sell the kit. A plan or cut sheet wound be great if you have one. Thanks for sharing👍
Working on it! I'll be sure to let people know when I have that available.
You should sell build enclosure my friend looks awesome 👍
@@Vintauri I'm almost finished with mine, but I'm an Old Missouri Redneck, so mine doesn't look as nice as yours !! I would likely be interested in one of yours if that ever happens. I'm going to have to do all of my work in the garage since I don't have anyplace I can vent to from my workshop in the basement.
@@Vintauri when plans or a cut sheet is available would love to receive a link for it. Great build and video. Cheers!
Great job and very well thought out cabinet. I also would be interested in purchasing one if they every become available.
thoughtful construction!
Thank you!
Very nice design. I'm in the process of building it now. One design change I've done is instead of screws to hold the front plate on, I've used 1/4" rare earth magnets flush mounted on each corner (8 total). Very easy to just snap on and off as needed. It automatically aligns itself as well.
Great idea 👍
Totally impressed. Thanks for sharing. Great job.
Awesome enclosure. Brilliant design. Nice work!
I was just looking at this on Etsy. I did not even click it. I saw it, thought “maybe I will get that”. I close my apps, closed ipad. Came back to ipad, opened youtube, your video is the top recommendation on my homepage.
IT IS A SIGN! Or scary how inter-mingled all of these companies are lol. I was not even searching for an enclosure - I was searching jigs just to see what is out there.
The internet tied with smart phones and web tracking website is a creepy place!
@@Vintauri indeed. It is okay though, I only wrap my head in Reynolds brand aluminum, so I am safe. Lol.
Great job on your enclosure, very well thought out and you’re explanation was also excellent 👍
Very nice design got some great tips from this video to attempt my build for the D1 extension kit.
Fantastic video. This engineering considerations on this were very impressive.
Love your setup!
Thank you! I enjoy sharing ideas to hopefully inspire others.
wow, you really though of everything. Excellent setup!
Great design
Love love love your enclosure
Thank you! It's been working great for me!
That encloser looks spectacular, tha ks for sharing
Very nice! I was just planning my enclosure today. Glad I watched this first, I have much better ideas now.
nicely done. very well thought out and executed!
Are you able to use the RA2 Pro in your enclosure ? Nice looking enclosure looks well built !!
A masterclass on design - lovely job 👍
Thank you!
You've definitely hit a ton of details here. Great design. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you! I tried to put some thought into it without overdoing the design. Once I get a little more time using it and testing it, I'll share any updates on modifications or changes.
Really nicely done Steve! The shelf for the honeycomb is a brilliant idea.
Thanks Steve! I'm looking forward to getting it set up inside now and using the laser for some real projects!
Good detailed explanation, love it!
Very clean brother
Great video and thank you for your info. Take care and stay safe.
Great enclosure for the D1! I'm totally new to the XTool engraver/cutter that I recently bought unfortunately I'm thinking about returning it since I do not have a workshop to operate from- but thanks for your previous videos! I've watched a couple of them and just want to thank you for sharing your knowledge and for inspiring novices!
i have also no workshop.you just need a window where the fumes can go out everything else you can arrange by yourself. If you build an enclosure it should be bigger than the laser and also possible to take out everything because it might be that you have projects what are bigger than your frame or enclosure.so it is always good to have a garage or some more room for bigger projects.also a table saw will help you a lot when you want be able to cut the pieces in the right size if it is wood.
Great video. Now that I go my laser, I will purchase your plans. Thanks
I was talking with JTech today and let them know that you’re an influencer to there company so I hope you get something cool from them, happy to help! I also purchased downloaded and printed this box and will be building it shortly. Thanks a lot I really appreciate your hard work and I will definitely give you a raving review once all is said and done!
Outstanding video. Very useful information and well presented. Thanks for your work.
Glad it was helpful! I do my best to help inspire others.
Great job!
Great video and awesome enclosure.
Thanks! I’m excited to put it to work on some real projects now!
this is a well-thought design, a very functional enclosure indeed.
Thank you!
Yeaahhhh you are on to something there. I’d definitely take one.
Thanks for the links and the plans. I just ordered everything along with the plans. I’m eager to get started.
Sounds great! Let me know if you have any questions!
@@Vintauri quick question… did you use the CNC or laser to cut the acrylic? If neither, a tablesaw? Thanks.
Great job- some good ideas here.
I love how he looks like hes asleep while talking!
Great enclosure.
Thank you!
That’s a great build both practical and it looks good. Given me a great starting point for my enclosure thanks
Great to hear!
Awesome enclosure! Looks like something you would buy directly from xTool! I hope they will eventually sell an enclosure as I do not have the skills to make anything that beautiful!…yes, I said beautiful…I even called my honeycomb pretty when I first got that! Lol
Beautiful and very professional work on that enclosure. I just downloaded the plans in anticipation of my soon arriving first laser.
Awesome, thank you!
Thank you for the plans...I started making one for my daughter for her birthday and mine is really close to your measurements....A few changes and it will be spot on to your plans...Thank you so much for taking your time to do this foe whoever buys them...Well worth the cost...Thank you again!
You are so welcome! I'm glad people are finding them useful!
Very Nice Job
This is the best enclosure I have seen. Thanks for sharing your build. I have ordered my laser cutter and will build an enclosure for it similar to yours.
Thank you! I'm glad this video can be an inspiration for your future build!
Bought Plans today then off to Lowes for wood. Got some pieces cut today and now waiting on screws. A SainSmart LC-40 will live in the enclosure. Exhaust piping is complete to the outside of garage. Thanks for designing the Plans. There it is an A-Plus! Looking forward to air assist and a roller bed.
Dude, this is by far one of THE BEST videos on youtube that I've come across. Thanks for explaining what you did and why you did it. I'm going to attempt to make one the way you made yours. It would be great to download a file that provides all of the dimensions so I wouldn't have to bother you with questions if I hit a snag. Thanks for making this video and for sharing!
Thank you for the compliments! I do have a set of plans and build instructions on etsy for those interested. The link is in the description of the video if you would like to check them out.
I've looked at a bunch of DIY enclosure videos and even bought a few plans ... this one stands out and looks like the best option for me. Pretty smart design. Should be easy to adapt the plans to my laser (ATEZR P20+), and I already have some of the components! Just bought your plan.
Very nice Steve, I'm nt having much fun with the Xtool enclosure but think yours would be perfect. I've added it to my Etsy cart and will be buying this week. Loving the idea of having the honeycomb suspended and the ability to access the D1, I find the official enclosure tends to swallow the D1, I would much prefer to have access as you have. Looking forward to building this :D
Looks perfect. In principle as the one I plan to build my D1. However the laser has not arrived yet :( I especially like that the honey comb sits on a shelf and the possibility to control the air intake toward the bottom ans top. Very neat design and well made.
looks very good
Thank you!
I like the case you make for xtool
Brilliant…thanks for sharing and all the other info you share with us…Ray NZ
nice job
loved the video. Thanks man
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video! Liked and subbed!
Thanks for the sub!
I really love this enclosure and would be interested in buying some sort of plans and cut list to build (that means my husband builds - lol) this enclosure. We are just in the process of purchasing the XTool. I am excited, it looks like an amazing laser. I will subscribe and watch your site for any other helpful videos. Thanks for sharing.
Just got my XTool! I would love to be put on the list for the diagram also! Looks great!!!!
I made a new post on the channel last night with information about how to get the plans!
Excellent enclosure! Thanks for the content and tips! I'm thinking of making one myself, but would like to incorporate an adjustable bottom shelf. Whether that be manual or slide-driven remains to be seen. Currently I have a manual shelf that I can slide in different levels, depending on the size of the object I'm engraving, but no enclosure. Again, thanks for the inspiration!
well done
Thank you!
i'd love to know more about the LED lighting limit switch and how to do that. Seems like a great idea 👍🏻
Coming soon! I'll be working on video showing that as multiple people have asked about it.
Excellent design, excellent execution! Add me to the list of people who want to buy the plans or a completed enclosure. Thanks for sharing.
I put up a new post on my channel about how you can purchase the plans and cut files to build one yourself if interested. Thank You!
I made my own (in progress) of your enclosure. I couldn't wait on the plans LOL! I posted the build in the xTools D1 forum in case you want to check it out. I made a few small changes. A hinge on the front panel. I am going to use sliders for the D1, not a fixed shelf. And I am thinking of cutting a 20 x 20 inch hole in the base so I can lift it to accommodate deeper objects if needed. I am using a six inch duct since I already have a 6 inch in line fan. Great inspirational video!
Nice work! My goal is share what I'm doing to hopefully inspire others to give it a try. I'll keep an eye out for your mods in the forum!
@@Vintauri Hey. I just uploaded a video I made of my enclosure. I definitly gave you plenty of kudos and put your link in my video kzhead.info/sun/oM6yetmdoHR3pnA/bejne.html
I just received my D1 and I would like to check out your plans, I did look at xTools for a forum and there was none. Where can I find where you posted your plans. Can you provide a link to your plans?
@@JoeL-sc4cy There is a link in the video description where you can find the plans. Let me know if you have any questions.
im having a really difficult time getting everything to cut right using aspire . but im excited to get this done and put together
I cut some of the parts on my CNC using Vcarve Pro to set up the files. Let me know if there is a specific part that is giving you trouble and I’ll see what I can do.
@@Vintauri thanks i will get back with you either way
Take my freaking money already, lol. This'll be a must with the 20w power.
Okay so bought the plans Steve and my MDF was delivered this morning and laser safe acrylic was delivered precut last week. Guess what I'll be building this weekend. I'll be using 12mm moisture resistant MDF. Birchply isn't cheap here in the Uk. Will be painting it inside and out too. Thanks again buddy :D Will update when done and leave a picture on your Etsy feedback thing.
Awesome Chris! Let me know if you run into any questions! MDF is perfect for this as well. I look forward to your build.
@@Vintauri Thank you, will do. Just dusted off my tools. I forgot how much wood work stuff I had lol. Should be good to go :D
Love this set-up. Please put my name on the list also Sir! I will be watching for your post!
Great idea. Looks like you have covered all the key details that a standard enclosed laser has. I would be interested in building an enclosure as well. Would you be willing to share the details of the design?
Would be cool to have an adjustable honeycomb for use with rotary using table lifts vs taking items in and out
I would order one as well
I really like this cabinet very well designed I think the only thing I would've changed his put magnetic contact on the front lid. *****
Magnets are definitely an option. My concern with them is that they have good pulling power but not great lateral holding strength. So there would need to be some pins, stop blocks or other devices to keep it from being knocked off sideways.
I love the enclosure, and can fully understand why you don't want to go into manufacturing of them. However, you could sell the plans in both PDF form with cut files/materials, etc. And possibly even the CNC files needed to recreate it exactly as you have it. That way others can take over the manufacturing of it.
I'm actually working on the PDF plans and will offer the digital files as well. I hope to have them finished up soon but as its just a hobby, my time to work on it is limited but I want something decent that people can follow without difficulty. Stay tuned!
Bold move going with white in a smoky environment.
I was using up some paint I had on hand, plus it's an exterior rated paint that will be more durable and easier to clean. It also help reflect the light inside the case making it easier to see. I have no disillusions that it will get a bit dirty over time.
Great video and love the build. Any concerns about making the enclosure out of wood based products? The OEM ‘tents’ advertise as fire resistant. What is likelihood of catching enclosure on fire?
I'm interested in purchasing plans and cut list as well!
getting ready to build mine for the extended D1 pro wish me luck
Let me know if you have any questions!
This is great. I purchased this for my Xtool. I am assuming the 40W module will fit inside the cabinet as well. I am setting up the parts on my Carvewright CNC router.
That enclosure looks pretty sweet man. If you had any plans for it would be cool to see those. While I don't have a laser just yet this was one of the things I feel is a must have when using one. Will be interesting to see what xTool releases for their enclosure, but would be pretty hard pressed to be as nice as yours.
I'm working on cleaning them up and hope to release them soon.
I’m also interested in getting plans so I can build this. Please let us know ASAP. I don’t want to get impatient and possibly build something else that isn’t as cool.
@@Vintauri have they been released yet??
@@JohnSmith-rt5yq Yes, plans have been posted and are available here: www.etsy.com/listing/1208732982/diy-laser-enclosure-plans
Hey Steve. Great video. New Xtool D1 user. Love it. By chance are you planning on sharing your enclosure plans? Really love your details.
I am going to work on putting together at least a basic parts and cut list with measurements to share. Thank you for checking it out!
Nice. Looks like all you have to do is add several inches to the sides for the extension kit.
That could work, you'd have to make sure to have room in the correct spot for the cables and I'd want to make sure there is no sagging from the wide body. I'm hoping to extend a laser or two this summer and will play around with the extended design then.
Fantastic enclosure. The best that I have seen yet. Do you, by any chance have plans for it and what material did you make it out of,
This is primarily made from 1/2” plywood. I slide in the sheet metal on the bottom to help protect the base from any laser beams that make it through the material and never run it unattended in case of a flare up. I do have the plans and build guide available. The link is in the video description. Thanks for checking it out!
Hello I have purchased your plans I'm almost done with my enclosure. Will you share the information about the lights and limit switch?? Thanks Mike
Great video. I am a new Xtool D1 user. If and when you plan on sharing your enclosure plans, please let us know.
I’m making a few adjustments to my original drawings and will get a basic cut list out soon. Thank you!
This is awesome, would be interested in buying a plan if you do put one out.
I've added a post to my channel with a link to my Etsy shop where you can purchase the plans. Thank you for your interest!
This is awesome Steve, you have done a wonderful job in both design and function. I bought the plans from Etsy and am waiting for the parts to come in from Amazon for the build. I was wondering if you could provide links for the LED lighting and Limit Switch you used? I think that feature is a plus and would like to duplicate the design. thanks Kurt
i know its been awhile but what did you do with your lighting situation I'm starting to build mine now for my extended version
An answer from Vintauri would be a good thing. It would still be good to answer this question. I'm about ready to install the lights.
Another month and no reply. Maybe I'm missing something. Oh well.
Hello this seems a great product you made and looks to much practical 👍🏻 , i just bought xtool d1 pro and i need such kind of enclosure and I don’t have machinery to cut all plywood so it would be great that you can made a kit i will be ready to purchase i think that would be great for anyone who doesn’t have machinery to make enclosure. Your Answer will be much appropriated Thank you
How's the cut list coming? :-)
Nice design Steve. Wondering if your cutting paper or something thin will it provide some suction to hold the material in place on the honeycomb? My old C02 laser would do this and was useful. Thanks for the video Lynn
If you have the space to enlarge the enclosure to move the air outlet to the bottom as much as possible, it should create a downdraft situation that would also help hold paper down to the honeycomb panel. This design will pull the air across the top and bottom of the panel, so it might not have as much hold down effect. I usually just add some thin rare earth magnets to hold paper in place.
My favorite so far! Likely going to buy the plans. 2 questions before I pull the trigger, please. What did you use for materials? Is it tall enough to use the RA2? Thanks
The RA2 will fit for most objects without any modification.
Really nice work Steve. I bought the plans and they look great but I have the extension kit so I'm going to have to scale them up. Before I go through that exercise I thought I'd see if you already had done it. If so, how can I get ahold of them. Thanks!
I have not scaled them up yet. I'm hoping to extend a couple lasers this spring / summer and look at a V2 for this size and a scaled up size to meet some more of the newer lasers out there now.
are you selling the plans for the enclosure? This is the nicest one I have seen!
I'm working on creating at least a basic parts layout and cut list to share. I'll post an update when they are available.
This is a great video for building your own laser enclosure. Where did you get your laser rated plexiglass?
Check out JTech Photonics here in the US for the laser rated acrylic. jtechphotonics.com/?product=445nm-laser-shielding-24-x-12
Hi, really like the way it came out. I'm curious to know why you preferred to mount the laser and honeycomb on the small shelf instead of using the original raisers and to build spacers for the honey comb? I think it can simplify the build a little bit.
I think I can answer. With the laser being placed on a built in shelf it is already lifted to the required height to use a rotary. Without the shelf you have to install the original risers every time you want to use a rotary, that would take time and after awhile become a nuisance. Plus if the shelf isnt there, then you would have to keep track of the leg risers...i dunno know about you, but i am ALWAYS misplacing (not loosing) things; so with the shelf already installed to the height you need to use the rotary, then you have no need for the leg risers.
hi have you got a video on building this enclosure - downloaded the plans and they are well designed but still have a few questions so if you have a build video do you have a link please
nice job you did of this - will this enclosure plan fit a sculpfun S30 10watt unit into it or are there slight differences in sizes - thanks
I'll have to try to double check, the footprint of the S30 should fit in there, but I don't recall if the laser head sits up too high without modifying the design a bit for the Sculpfun.
Hi Steve, I found your plans in your Etsy shop thanks for those. Quick question though, @8:10 in the video with the honey comb installation you mentioned making a change in the dimensions, and I was wondering if the plans I downloaded have this alteration incorporated into them? Thanks again, the plans look very well written!
Yes I did add the extra depth for the honeycomb bed into the plans so there is more room to adjust it back farther. Thanks for checking them out!
@@Vintauri Thank you sir, love the plans!
Great enclosure. I am a making an enclosure for my one finity laser.Where did you get your protective plexiglass. I seem to be having a hard time sourcing it
You can find it at Jtech under the safety gear. jtechphotonics.com/?product_cat=safety-gear
I would love to purchase the kit if you sell it since I dont have the tools or materials to make the enclosure
Great plans. Bought them last week. Need to buy a few more items. Question...How did you wire the lighting wityh the limit switch? Also, I'm considering placing my exhaust port to the rear of the enclosre. Any thoughts? Thank you for sharing the plans and your knowledge.
Moving the air exhaust port to the back should be fine. I have my enclosure up to the wall so I needed it on the side for clearance. I've had a few questions on the lighting so I think I should make a quick video on it. It's strips of LED lights connected with 18 and 20 gauge silicone wire. I have a limit switch that is pressed with the lid closed to turn on the front section of lights.
ordered the etsy file and got the box all cut out today. Really going well and easy to follow instructions. 2 Questions for you, I don't have access to a CNC for the front panel to cut all of those air slots. Thinking about cutting 4 parallel slots the (almost) full length of the panel on my router table either 1/4 or 3/8ths. Thoughts? Second question, what is the name of the switch you use to control the lights on the top of the box? Thanks!
I’m sure the slots you are suggesting should be fine. Just make sure to keep enough “meat” on the board that it’s stable. The switch for the lights is a simple 12v limit switch. Here is a link to some that will work. amzn.to/3OdofJ6
Love the design! D1 Pro user here! I currently use a Creality enclosure which I despise! The supporting rods have excessive flex which causes the enclosure to bow allowing smoke to reach the outside despite having adequate exhaust! I've had to resort to stuffing plastic bags along the bottom to seal it. Question on your enclosure: You said that you would modify the honeycomb bed rails and extend them further to the rear. Was this mod included in the current plans? Keep up the great builds Steve! Ya done good!
Thanks for the kind words. I did make the changes in the plans that are available on Etsy. So you will have more flexibility in the honeycomb spacing.
Thank you! Watched and enjoyed several laser videos? Which would you recommend, the OLM3or x-tool?
I think both are very capable lasers and I don't think you would go wrong with either one. You'd have to compare the Xtool 10w pro to the OLM3 to be fair and they stack up pretty close to each other spec wise. So I guess it would depend on which one has the better sale / bundle at the time of purchase.
that's the best enclosure yet, Also which rotary do you have the original or the new R2? I need to start on a enclosure very soon but I haven't received the new rotary yet. again job well done.
I have both the original and the RA2. I have a video on the RA2 if you want to check it out. I wanted this enclosure to be as short as I could for where I’m using it. Otherwise I’d make it a bit taller for more flexibility. I can fit most standard cups and mugs on it as is but the larger 30oz tumblers need more room.
@@Vintauri ok great I'm still waiting for the air assist and rotary, so I can't measure anything.but thanks have a great day
