John Deere Grader Repairs! | Fitting Blade Skin & Replacing Blade Slide Rail
We’ve got a lot to do to get this Grader job done in a short amount of time! This is a John Deere 672GP Motor grader, the blade is getting a new wear skin and we’re also replacing a worn-out blade slide rail. We show the step-by-step process to remove the blade off the grader so we can fit and weld a new wear skin on to the blade. We also show the steps to replace the bottom guide rail on the back of the blade. First, we gouge off the old rail using carbon air arc gouging before machining the new piece of material in our Zayer bed style milling machine. We then fit and weld the new guide rail onto the blade before installing the blade back onto the grader. We know our customer is going to be happy with the repairs and upgrades on their machine!
In this video we are using:

Whoop whoop!! 🥳🥳🥳
Cutting Edge Engineering always gets an automatic thumbs up from me. Now im off to the servo for me durries,
Stay here
I feel like I’ve seen this job before
My favourite part of all the videos is seeing Kurtis trying to get words out 😂😂😂😂😂. Don't worry I am like that to 😂😂
Karen I just want to say that your editing has become next level. Story and content flows nicely. Even the little things are noticeable like normalizing your audio. Thnx for another great video from you guys and Cheers with a beer from Vancouver Island Canada.
wow thank you so much for the great feedback! 😄
All I can say is YEP! A pair of legends working together to entertain with excellent content.
Hear hear!@@eyema_pierat8993
As an Ex Pro Sound and Audio Engineer who has had a couple of decades of experience in live events and pretty much all manner of media production all I can say is that it's all the little things that this channel gets right that lifts it well above the pack. Not only is Kurtis a true master of his craft but Karen's videography, editing and production prowess would be right at home in productions worth 100x what this channel sees.
@@CuttingEdgeEngineeringWell deserved 👏
One of your rare customers who understand the value of preventive maintenance
I really love how this channel is an amazing meshing of two people with incredible skills. Kurtis with his engineering and Karen with her videography. They combine to make one of the best KZhead channels around. Really glad they have each other and we all get to enjoy these videos
Its so true, their skills perfectly compliment one another. These videos are next level!
Dude, yalls channel has helped me in spades at the shop with ideas and processes for different jobs. Granted i had to modify a few things to some of your techniques to make what I had goin on work but overall I cant thank you enough for making vids like this for other fabricators out there like myself. Im slowly but surely building the weld shop at work from scratch to eventually be able to manufacture parts for our customers like you do. Eventually what I want to see my section of the shop do is be able to make whatever the hell the customer needs and not have to order it out of state and wait for months for the parts to show up like we and several other heavy equipment shops do now. When we are able to do that Im 100% sure those other companies will be contracting US to make parts for them as well as us taking care of our customer base. Might take 5 or 7 yrs to do that but im willing to wait and see what the fruits of my shops labor will come to bear.
When you got your processes down and know your business I'd recommend going solo and doing your own thing.
@@schwuzi Ive been slowly gathering equipment over the yrs to do exactly that, so far I have my lincoln 330mpx, LN25x, my tig machine, miller 211, hypertherm 30air, and a profax 4000 gouger. Im sockin away for a compressor that casn run off the genny welder, im not skimping on that bitch either.
Im really in awe at your freehand torch cutting skill. Some people dont realize how hard that can be.
Agreed. Kurtis' freehand torch cut is cleaner and straighter than some sawcut edges I've seen.
I was surprised to see he used a gas ax. Wouldn't a plasma cutter been better?
Like a plasma cutter with that torch.
practice makes master.. there;s guys around here do same stuff... young and olde.. and not on youtube ...
I do! Spent many years to get halfway good at it!
Just checked on your About page: 189 million+ views and countiing on all videos! Wow! 701K subscribers since June 2020 and I've been watching for most of that time. It never gets old and I'm constantly amazed at the depth of knowledge and skill that Kurtiss possesses and shows off as if it's no big deal. Well, it's impressive! Thanks for the great video, Karen!!
So my Favorite is seeing a young couple living and working.together! Supporting each other! Being an example of how life should be!!! Gr was t Job!!! Blessing to you both! And all postings are my Favorite !!!! Well done guys 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🩷
I appreciate how you respect your tools and what you are working on . No banging tools down never dropping or tossing the old parts everything is done with care. The camera work is wonderful. Movements are smooth and well thought out. I enjoy that you take the time to feed the birds as well. Thank you from Wethersfield, Ct
I really missed you guys last week. Your collection of accessories for your hydroptic machine is amazing. ❤ I really enjoy the blade and dozer videos, always so satisfying to see Karl work..
Hey mate! We both enjoy our hydroptic tooling collection too and was glad so many enjoyed seeing it. Hope you enjoy this weeks video 😄👍
It’s Kurtis 🤣
@@MrPnew1 It's an old joke.....
I MISSED TOO
@@MrPnew1It’s Dark Karl. Go back and watch the first 30 episodes and you’ll hear/see the joke.
Those graders are a strange piece of machinery, the various directions they can move all at one time are both bizarre and fascinating. Take care guys. 👍
Not to mention the graders that can pivot the main frame at the cab place the front wheels in an offset position! Then there are the ones that can lay the front wheels over on an angle to resist the forces from the blade.
Watching a good grader operator is amazing as well. Especially back in the day without GPS.
You should try calibrating the GPS/sensors for the machine control 🤪
@@rowanjones3476 I can’t imagine. I was honor graduate in my class at heavy equipment school at Dobbins AFB years ago and sucked at all of it. 😝
If you watch during the drive-away at the end, this is an articulated rear unit. Way cool
Your videographer has a great natural instinct for knowing what viewers want to see. She has honed her skill over time so that your videos have the highest interest level. Definitely keep her on payroll! Kurtis, you are a hard worker and thoroughly professional in all procedures - and yet have time to feed the birds! So enjoyable.
I don't listen to the bloopers that often, but I did today. "I have to listen to ya and then I have to listen to ya again when I go to edit the video." When I hear that, the first thing that came to my mind was. Something I hear as a kid. "Behind every great man... Is an even greater woman!"
Gday, that was bloody awesome seeing the Zayer in full swing, definitely using the table limits, the grader looks in to be in good nik which shows the operator takes pride in the machine, top job and don’t stress, that monkey in your head has a cousin in mine with a full drum it, have a great weekend mate, cheers
Hey Matty! It was great to see the Zayer being used to it's limit, the swarf mess wasn't so fun 😅 Hats off to the operator and owners of the grader they've definitely looked after it. Sounds like you and Kurtis can start a band 😂 Take care and HI to Bec 🥰
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering What is this battery shock key that you use at the beginning of the video to disassemble the gps guide pole?
Random American who was able to Uber eats perfectly for lunch time in Australia must’ve stayed up extra late to get that done, props to that person
You can schedule!
Others may do a grade job but Kurtis' skills are much grader. 😁😎🤟
I see what did😊❤
I love the way Aussies say " WHOPPER" or "Angry Whopper" . Love this channel. A master class in exception work!
Hungry Jacks actually tastes much better than McDonalds any day ! Didn't know you could get chips (fries) on the burgers. Been away from Oz for toooo long...lol
Just started my first day learning how to rebuild cutting torches and regulators....taking some time from repairing welding machines and cross training...
good stuff mate!
Absolutely gorgeous shot at 18:15 of Kurtis doing the air arc gouging. I come back every week, not just for the beauty of the engineering, but also the beauty of the videography. You're a great team 😊
👍
I love when he breaks out the arc gouger. Dude is a magician with that thing.
Looks like a fireworks display!
My weekly reminder that I'm getting old and there's a reason guys in the mid-to late 50's or older don't do that kind of laborious work anymore. My older body knees and back hurt just watching the video! lol. Awesome that you guys are now over 700k in subscribers! It's well earned as the content, video and editing are first class. Clearly you both work your butts off and are getting rewarded for it. Well done! Cheers from Arizona.
That little dog is a beast. I also love the way those birds sound.
That operator must absolutely LOVE that machine. I don't think I've seen one that worn but so absolutely mint.
Karen telling Kurtis how hard it is having to listen to him, priceless! Take car the three of you plus the family of birds you also entertain 🙂 👍💪✌
The skills of this guy are next level, never seen anything like it!!! Thanks for the excellent content.
Karen, with the sick burn in the outtakes, what a savage!
Man, that Zayer is such an awesome machine. Seeing it use it's full travel length in a single pass is super cool.
we're loving it!
Why were the bolts tapped on with a hammer after tightening? Around the 43:00 mark @@CuttingEdgeEngineering
I am so impressed with your editing, Karen. Everytime I reach for the control for a bit of forwarding, you beat me to it. It's like you're reading my mind, lol. Amazing stuff. Keep up the great work. Love your guy's channel.
This comment has made my day! I really appreciate your feedback and it helps to know that I'm on the right track with what viewers would enjoy 😍
@@CuttingEdgeEngineeringyep twice in this vid I went to double tap to skip forward and the vid jumps into high speed 😊.
Yes, I think the angle of the shots & frame are always what a curious & inquisitive machinist would wanna see, then the length & editing are just right so you get your fill & go on to the next effortlessly & intuitively. Really well done, Bravo!
@@damientoomey1194, funny, I've never had the urge to jump forward in one of Karen's videos. They always seem to flow effortlessly to the expected segway or conclusion . Sign of good intuitive editing I guess. Thanks Karen.
This one-man factory is amazing. Kurtis have every single tool, machine and skill to do anything we can imagine. Very happy you have a lot of work you love, sir!
The videos show the professional side and the outtakes the human side. Exceptional work from both of you...
Using the stick shows the importance of air fed visors for sure
Karen said the same thing, air respirator definitely a must!
Attention to detail, and pride of workmanship - that’s what makes this channel so great.
As a customer, I'd be happy with that repair. Plenty of attention to alignments, etc. 🤙🏻
Karen,, You are an absolute delight!! 😂😂😂 Cheers from Florida ❤❤
I really like these quick edited videos, keep it up Karen!
What a great asset that Zayer machine is and I love the way Kurtis uses a forklift truck with such precision, just like any other tool in the workshop! Nice video, both…👏👏👏
Yeah, the way Kurtis uses that forklift and with such precision you just know that he has put plenty of hours in with that machine.
Zero scratches on the counterweight, absolutely unheard of
I use to roll lead carpets(a large Pb spill)up with a forklift, absolutely amazing the license assessors when they come through every couple years
Don't feel too bad Kurtis. MY mom was walking around looking, till I asked her what she was looking for ? She said "My glasses !" I said, the ones on your head⁉️ She grabbed them and smiled at me 😮🙃. 😊❤
Always a good day when a cutting edge engineering video shows up on my must watch list.
That whopper looks WAY better and more delicious than Burger King whoppers here in the USA in my opinion 😅
That guide bar was a lot more work than I first thought. But I guess that's because you did a PROPER job on it. The attention to detail made sense as the job progressed and that blade is now pukka. 👌 Missed you guys last week and it really put a crimp in my day. I was scratchy all day! 😢
Nothing worse than a scratchy crimp.
@@gazz501 Has yer missus ever had a scratchy crimp., then you'd know what "is Worse."
@@markneedham752, I've heard it called many things but never a "scratchy crimp"! I'll have to remember that for future use if you don't mind?🇨🇦😁

Hi, Curtis, it is unbelievable that you know so many tools and lathes and mills and use them skillfully. You are a professional maintenance technician. On the weekend morning, after breakfast, I see you professionally and meticulously completing each customer's repair work, saving them a lot of money. This makes me feel very happy. Thank you, and thank you Karen for the filming and editing. Best wishes to you.
Copious amounts of copper grease, or what I call "a love letter to the next guy on the job" ;) Thanks for another fix for my CEE addiction! Last week was tough without you guys!
That Zayer is a beautiful machine, excellent addition to the stable
My 11 month old loves your videos, she is always enraptured, especially by Homeless!
The most impressive thing about this video is putting the blade back on.
Someone has to be able to work on these huge machines. Thanks for including us on this journey.
This was millidiameters (hey at least it's not bananas) from being the best blooper reel to date. And Karen has to listen to it twice. That was priceless and something we, the viewers, thank you both for. Again the highlight of me weekend, You guys rock. Cheers EDIT: Should have watched to the end before commenting... That "give me back my socket!" was so relatable.
I love the socket part too
There’s Gonna be one lucky kid growing up with parents like this.
Two things, 1) loved seeing some stick action on the facesheet replacement, 2) you are a mechanics dream, putting anti-seize on all the bolts. Love you guys
I do look forward to a Friday morning (UK) to see what CEE has put out for us!!! The skill, patience, equipment and precision needed is just mind-blowing - keep the vids coming team!!
The same here always watching what Karen / Kurtis have got on there you tube channel
Kuris and Karen's videos are always a pleasure to watch and learn. You both have your talents and professions dialed in to perfection
Never underestimate the importance of the safety stump. 😊
Craftsmanship and work ethic are bar none some of the best Ive seen as a 20 year welder. But my favorite is the end seeing the outtakes with your wife! EPIC!
Greetings from Belgium.... Nice to see you back CEE team, missed you last week.... Job well done and a happy customer 😊. Enjoy your weekend.
Always cool ... Your patience and persistence on these huge jobs is amazing. Karen rocks ! Thanks to Homeless and birdies as well !
As usual another textbook lesson on repairing heavy equipment.
My favorited part of the video was the disassemble and reassemble of the blade from grader. Nice to see the manufacturers have designed in a reasonable amount of working space. I also liked squaring up the slide rail. Plus feeding of the birds as well as the Gourmet uber eats. As well as the wielding.
Great to have a video this week guys. Hope yas had a great time in Melbourne.
Melbourne was a blast and was nice to have a break from videoing. As always, thanks for the Superthanks, we'll put it towards our next caffeine fix so we can keep making awesome videos 😄👍
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering Haha. Great to hear mate.
This is one reason that you got this machine.
My two favorite things? 1.Every detail in front of the camera. 2. Every detail behind the camera.
Friday dose of CEE - is MOST welcome! Thanks for letting us watch that grader getting a new lease of life 👍👍🦴
10:06 I envy your skill with that torch; I can't imagine how many hours of use it has taken to get that good. I also had to remember the only reason you were using a torch instead of a plasma cutter was probably because of the "Tax" on electrical equipment in the form of "Safety Inspections". For those that don't know, Australia requires testing and tagging electrical equipment and the numbers I did find(South Australia instead of Queensland) for the cost, put it between two and three thousand dollars per piece of equipment. Kurtis mentions those inspections as one of the reasons he uses so many Air Tools in his Q&A from December, 20222.
44.xx. The mark of a skilled tradesman right there! Anybody who can use that anti-seize goo without getting it all over their hands and clothing is a true master! That is some evil poop in that little can and to get where it’s needed and nowhere else is the work of a true ninja😁😁
never get enough of watching bits of steel turn blue always boggles my mind that those pieces of blues steel is between 600 and 800 degrees
I know a lot of people have already said it but if you watch any other machining videos you will really appreciate how well edited theses are. Kudos Karen. Maybe you'll take the current stigma off the name all by yourself!
First of all welcome back and congrats on achieving 700k subs. I cannot seriously fathom why you not have over a million subs.
thank you very much!
Another Hello from Vancouver Island, Canada - Born and raised in Brisbane, been on the island now for 17.5 yrs +. Missing the nice warm weather over there...and the fishing !
I love the intros when he drives something in or drives in with something on the forklift. It's genius.
Isaac would be proud with the surgical precision of the cutting torch. Great videos!! Keep em coming. 👍👍
I have a steel ruler I bought years ago and always thought how cheaply made it was because it is so flexible and bendy, Now I see why at 7:52 in this video, thanks Curtis
Didn't mean to slight you Kurtis. Your obvious dedication to getting it right is an inspiration.
The out takes are like me every day in the shop, must make other people wonder. Keep it up kurtis.
Enjoyed seeing Kurtis WORK that BIG BLUE MILL!! I missed you last week.. glad everything is well!!! Love seeing the grader blade repairs went well. The birds were watching over you all!! Lord watches over the birds, he sees what they see!! The ONE LEADER SAID, everything here is good.. let's go!! They came back to keep the gremlins away from the equipment!!! Thank You Kurtis & Karen for a outstanding video.
Another great job. It's a pleasure watching Kurtis jump onto whatever machinery and operate it. And hats off to Karen for the excellent video production and including the outtakes where Curtis can allow his grumpy old tradesman to vent a bit, not that he's old or even really grumpy. He can laugh at himself after getting peed off.
It is really terrific that you have built your capabilities to do these value added jobs. You are a smart businessman and an excellent example for any young person who wants to run their own shop AND make a good living! 👍
I know it might seem normal to you guys. But it blows my mind the jobs Kurtis takes on. I’ll bet my bottom dollar that your customers don’t take you for granted.
Great content and filming as usual. Love seeing the blue beastie earning its keep, its becoming an integral part on the arsenal and a big time saver.
Great work you do Kurtis Recently just bought a big welder because of all these channels that use the arc gougers!
That is awesome!
Hey folks I missed seeing you last week. A slide hammer for moving pins. In my world if I had thought that every pin on every machine would be set up that way. I would have been in heaven, LOL. Airarc is the necessary evil of every welding shop. They can eat up a pair of coveralls in no time. Nomex is an option but kind of pricey eh. 5 Vertex vices. Those cost a pretty penny. What a blessing having that long mill now. Great move getting it for your business
It’s a pleasure watching you use that torch !
Well that was awesome as usual! Missed y’all last week but this one more than made up for it. Loved watching Kurtis use that big blue milling machine. Great video Karen!
Luckily for us this was fairly straight forward to watch and the usual excellent video editing made it even easier. We love all the animals!!!
You can tell a guy who knows how important his sense of hearing is to his trade, by how protective he is, of it, when doing non-critical chores. 🙉 👍🍁😊
The "Give me back my socket" from the out takes was so relatable...
My exact words too lol
Was hoping for crane updates but this is good enough!!!! Thank u for ur dedication to share with us
I'm still hoping for a christmas special of Karen fixing something and Curtis providing valuable commentary x)

Its incredibly satisfying to watch a true craftsman do what they do 🤯
Out takes, just brilliant. Stuff ups can and are edited out. Nice to see the edits. So we're not all perfect all the time, just sometimes. Most times we just meet the grade. Great video. Karen you make me knock off early Friday nights.
Kurtis. Your knowledge of all those machines and how to repair them is incredible. Not quiet as good as the work Karen does though.😁😁
OUCH!
