Since 1998, the Operator of the North Caspian Project, NCOC, has delivered 1,473 Sponsorship and Donation (S&D) projects in Atyrau and Mangystau Oblasts. Each of those projects is aimed at supporting education, healthcare, culture and sports. In particular, NCOC has donated essential learning equipment, including the latest generation of STEM labs, to a number of schools. This educational programme covers four main areas - engineering, programming, robotics and 3D modelling.
As part of its celebration of the 30th anniversary of the commencement of offshore operations in the North Caspian Sea, the Company, in partnership with the Mangystau Oblast Education Department, organised the "STEM-2023" Open Championship for schoolchildren of the region. Grade 6-11 secondary school students took part in the competition. It should be noted that as part of its Sponsorship and Donations Programme, NCOC has donated STEM classrooms to eight schools in the Mangystau Oblast (four in the city of Aktau and four in the Tupkaragan District).
The competitions were conducted in the following categories:
• “RoboBattle” - robots built by the contestants fighting in the ring;
• “Project Competition” - contestants building a robot assistant;
• “Potter’s Jug” - contestants creating original handicraft items using modelling clay;
• “Exhibition” - students presenting wood craft items made with laser machines; and
• “Arduino” competition where the contestants performed tasks centred around the "Smart Home” idea.
When evaluating the work of the students, it was not only craftsmanship, usability and design that was taken into consideration, but also the ability of the contestants to defend their project. As NCOC Government Relations Manager Olzhas Kemelov noted, “The objective of this project is to increase children’s interest in natural science and technology, help them apply scientific and technical knowledge in real life and develop critical thinking skills. We believe that in the future such skills will help them generate new ideas and stimulate the acquisition of high-level competencies.”
It is noteworthy that the championship was held in the House of Friendship which was built in 2017 as part of the NCSPSA Social and Infrastructure Projects.
