There has been a lot of growth on the channel lately. For this week's video we have a discussion (okay its more of a monologue) of how that feels, what that means, and how we can leverage that growth into a push for less inequality and positive economic change.

  • I never comment on KZhead videos. Here goes. Its not often you get to see true vulnerability. I'm watching a person who can see two futures. One of these futures scares him and he knows in his soul that something has to be done. Change is coming, I genuinely hope it can be a positive change for the many. Gary, I really appreciate your videos. It enables me to better understand the machinations of how the world around me has changed. My favourite line from this video is. All corners covered. we have energy cost problems, which can mean people don't have money for laptops. Nor Internet, not if v poor. Though everyone can go to the library for free. Government and even youtube censor stuff, so they could easily censor his channel and website. The book is always available. Sure tick tok etc can be used to draw people in. Depending on price most could get e book, or audio version.

So it’s great to have someone like Gary who has an "in" as a legitimate source of economic value to say all this. I just wonder if he builds the reach fast enough to stop Starmer squandering the one chance labour are getting with policy’s bang in the center at best 🤔 - I hope so!

Burnt out and depressed, I came back to my hometown and just focused on trying not to drop dead. Watching someone like this awakens a long dead spark of hope inside me. If you guys need to take time out and strategise, do it. Do whatever can to ensure a) your mental, emotional and physical health and b) the long term success of your main mission as you describe it here. Everything else is secondary by a country mile. You’ve made me realise that maybe the best use of my time is organising in my community to connect into the wider movement you guys will be heralding. So I have a lot to think about now too. • *HEY GARY:* I'm an Australian engineer who started informally studying economics a few years ago because I got so frustrated with the interference I got on projects from people with MBAs and economics degrees. They always pushed back with 1 or both of 2 basic questions: _"What's the business case for that?"_ and _"Who's going to pay for it?"_ Even when we could answer what they ask they'd push back or worse send HR after us. So from an engineering perspective its great to see people like you also pushing back at these people because they have left a legacy in the energy and water sectors that will take decades to fix. I know you know about the neoliberal economics of people like Margret Thatcher and how its caused massive inequality, but I'd like to talk to you about what else it caused. Trying to keep it simple I'll only talk about the electricity part of the energy sector because its the easiest to understand. energy and *my most sincere apologies for the length of this:* FIRST AND IMPORTANTLY - When governments built and managed the energy sector as a public enterprise its KPI was NOT profit. People in every country including Australia used to whine and complain about what it cost to run power stations. What we never heard about was what we got in return -> Very cheap energy that allowed out economies to grow and create massive amounts of productive value adding employment. But that didn't suit the free market libertarians of Chicago School economics. I'm Australian but did my degree in America and there's a giant mistake the rest of us make in that we think America has a Left & Right politics. Its has liberal and libertarian 2 forms of Right sided ideology. American Liberals believe in a strong government frame work to protect and provide freedom and economic growth. American Libertarians believe in minimalist government, minimalist oversight and *ZERO* corporate regulations so they can do whatever they like. One thing not often noted is that the Chicago School is a reference to the University of Chicago which is a private university in part founded by *John D Rockefeller who hated government because they put limits on what he could do.* Out of UC came people like James McKinsey who founded the consulting industry. Go listen to Mariana Mazzucato on that. Also out of UC came neo-conservative politics that produced things like the invasion of Iraq. Most importantly out of UC came neoliberal economics from people like Hayek and Freidman who can be summed up on 2 words _"deregulate"_ & _"privatise."_ This is what we more commonly know as Reaganomics and Thatcherism. The problem with neoliberal economics in energy is that it flips the energy sector from a driver of economic & employment growth into a profit making enterprise. There's actually no KPIs in neoliberal economics, because that implies there's more than one indicator and in neoliberal economics there is only the one indicator - profit. Direct cut and past from the McKinsey website _"t has now been 50 years since economist Milton Friedman asked and answered a fundamental question: What is the role of business in society? Friedman’s stance was plain: “There is one and only one social responsibility of business-to use its resources and engage in activities designed to increase its profits.” That view has long influenced management thinking, corporate governance, and strategic moves. "_ You should understand that better than I do. What the effect is that when you privatise the energy sector you don't bring in investment to the energy sector you actually kill it and its killed in a very specific way. You need to understand there are 2 main parts to the energy sector - base load and load following. In case you don't know base load is the minimum amount your society needs every hour of everyday just to keep things going. Load following is what's needed when people start turning things on or switching them off and it has to respond. Base load only varies with economic growth (or decline) while load following changes every minute of every day. Power stations are similar to goods transportation. When you want to deliver lots of small packages like Amazon does where there's variety you use delivery vans. When you want to move tons of product in bulk you use a semi-trailer. Just like a semi costs a lot more than a van so do the large bulk delivery power stations. Example 1) Hinkley Point C (currently under construction at £26 Billon and rumored to now cost £35 Billion took 7 years to design, approve and get started. It will take 10 years to build and is planned to provide power in starting in 2028 for 60 years. I have done the math and it will take around 15 years to pay of at 80% operation. So what's the business case for spending that much money and the CEO wont see a return for over 30 years? That's over 120 quarterly statements that say _"we spent and are still paying off the investment."_ Example 2) Any wind farm, lets just say it has 100 turbines. When the first turbine is built (1% completion) you have income and as you build more turbines and connect them you have more income. Income for the existing turbines to pay for the rest of the turbines. What do you think investors will invest in the £26-35 Billion dollar lump they wont see a return from for 30+ years or the wind farm they wont even have to raise all the funds needed to build it. So fundamentally governments have a completely different agenda tot the private sector when it comes to electricity investment. When governments do energy they are always building ahead of demand so the system has MORE CAPACITY than is needed. That keeps market prices low because of over supply and YES I did a class in economics. That allows new businesses to start and existing businesses to develop, grow and employ people. When the private sector does energy they DON'T BUILD bulk delivery power stations they BUY EXISTING bulk delivery power stations *OR* they build smaller load following stations where they can get return on investment. There is a monster "herd of elephants in the room" issue and nobody talks about it. FIRST - understand the demand curve for energy is a direct proportional function of population. If the population grows so does the energy demand curve. When the private sector *BUYS* an existing power station it is generally in a market with OVER SUPPLY. If anyone build more large bulk supply so that energy supply stays ahead of demand then prices stay low and profits stay low. *IF THEY DO NOTHING and JUST WAIT* then eventually (because of population growth) energy demand will flip the market from over supply to under supply and the market price will GO UP. *Best of all the actual costs of generation will not change.* So when the power in the UK goes from 20p to 54p (as it did) that additional 34p is *100% PROFIT.* All these private companies ever had to do was *WAIT* until population outgrew supply. The problem is that those costs are paid by every household and business, So not only does everyone have less money to spend which affects consumption but businesses are less profitable because their electricity costs are higher. So nobody can go to their boss and ask for a raise to help pay their electricity bill because their boss ALSO HAS AN ELECTRICITY BILL. Higher electricity costs NEGATIVELY affect the economy at every level and yet where are the economists saying we need to fix this? Yeah they are silent because they are the people who told everyone that privatising the energy sector was the right thing to do because (and they said this everywhere) _"Competition would produce better services at lower costs!"_ If you want to talk about this great. If you want to do a video about this even better.

    • Tony, what's an excellent explanation. You could really work with Gary on that, as you have experience in the industry. But there is more to profiting from energy - government subsidies. Which are nearly direct transfer of money from taxpayers to the fossil fuel companies.

    • @@silverlinings3946 Government subsidies in the energy sector are completely out of control around the world. Here in Australia we have given over AU$10 Billion to the gas companies to help them develop new fields and gas plants. They have made over AU$140 Billion and not paid a cent in tax. The YT Channel Just have a think recently did a vid on subsidies and the number is staggering.

    • @@richardclark2290 Hi Richard, I had a look at the Greens and they don’t have the party structure to be a major force anytime soon. Labour favour first-past-the-post, are locked in a private versus public ideological rut and are dominated by elites/elite interests, whom control their selections. So it would have been highly unlikely that I’d have been selected for any seat of consequence as somebody who originates from a working class background. The Lib Dems are an ideas party and more democratic. If we ignore their self-destructive coalition agreement, they were the creators of the 1945 social pact (Beveridge report) and Keynesianism (as you point out) - albeit not the implementers (Labour, Attlee 1945-51). I felt I had more of a chance creating a platform vocalising ideas such as a wealth tax and a land tax in the Lib Dems. It is working out that way so far. It’s only my opinion, but on balance the LDs are likely more representative of the lower middle class have so a better positioning to stop the class contraction and grow it back from beneath with progressive policies like the wealth tax on £50M+ individuals - which, when I start talking about it to voters and explain that these people are not mobile and their wealth is tied up in assets, is very popular.

As it does there will be opportunities to rally a lot of people around a movement to change society for the better. The stress of having a clear insight into the huge divide in society, which you can clearly have and which you can see is getting worse, is too much for the shoulders of one man alone. You need to be part of a broad alliance of workers media outlets, a valuable part, but to know you are just a part, because that way workers get your valuable knowledge but you are not fighting the battle on your own. One way is not to hugely expand your channel but just to keep it running along naturally increasing your viewer numbers and in the same vein as now, but making yourself increasing available to other channels as guest speaker and spreading the message as widely as possible within your own time constraints. Your channel gives me hope.

  • Gary you are such an inspiration and you've taught me so much about the reality of how economics works that I so appreciate and I've shared with others (although unfortunately some aren't open to listening). Your work is one of the few lights in these dark times so please do what you need to do to keep your sanity while growing the movement how you see best. Perhaps take a leaf out of Novara and Owen Jones's books by seeking donations so you can hire people to support you with managing the KZhead, reading the messages etc. We believe in you and are behind you, I want to see you in government one day.

  • Gary. You put clearly and eloquently into words what I’ve been increasingly feeling for the last decade. I’m not rich, I’m a healthcare worker so far from it but I get an insight into the wealth gap through my work that most don’t. The clever thing the rich do is they hide in plain sight; I don’t think working people generally comprehend just how much wealth is concentrated to the 1%, so arguments of austerity gain traction with them even when it’s blatantly harmful to them. You’re amazing. I want to help. I’ve been sharing your videos with anyone who’ll listen to me, but I want to do more. Keep it up. Looking forward to the book 👍

  • You are empathetic. It doesn't mean you kill yourself through stress/unable to sleep/addiction! Every person you help through your efforts is a mustard seed that has immense value. The momento of your cause is perhaps overwhelming, just think of what you have to do, one day at a time. Leaders need to come from the people to bring down the elite. Feel the frequency of your collective head and heart. You are more powerful than you imagine. Peace be onto you.

  • The education aspect is so important. People get zero education on how the real economy works (both macro and micro) throughout their formal studies. But this is such an important subject to know how to move, operate and thrive in society. And I believe this is done on purpose so the masses are easier to trick and manipulate. What you are doing is amazing. The way you explain things is clear and concise even for people who know nothing about the matter (like myself!). I hope you will grow and succeed in your aims.

The main takeaway I noticed from this video was that you remind me very much of a sole trader trying to do everything themselves who is about to take the leap into prioritising and outsourcing work in order to grow. And growth of you and this brand can only mean growth of the message. That is why I’m excited and supportive.

What you say about being able to politically engage makes so much sense. Our vote basically makes no difference, but by communicating with others, we can start a new movement, party, whatever, that might be able to make real change

  • This channel has been a real eye opener. Its easy to see that things are bad because we are living in it but im now actually understanding why. As you alluded to, I fear that people have been so conditioned by mainstream media and politics to blame the other. Manufactured moral panics over the marginalised and misunderstood are constant and increasingly vicious, even though I didn't know exactly what was going on before I though it was obvious that refugees aren't the reason my energy bills are so high. That LGBT people merely exsisting isn't the reason wages stay low but the rent keeps getting higher, but a frightening number of people are hyperfocused on culture wars BS. Give people somebody to look down on, and they’ll empty their pockets for you. Given that trade unions have recently woken up into action, not just in the UK but all over Europe and seeing people like yourself helping people develop a framework to understand whats actually going on gives me some hope. I hope through education and community organising we can turn the tide and push towards a positive future. Because I fear if we don't we will succumb to fascism.

  • I think another problem is not just the division of the working class (I myself being in that category) is that people like myself don't have the proper understanding of politics. I think politicians make it very difficult for us to understand how the systems work. But that makes sense right if you don't understand how can u change it. You just end up angry for something you feel u have no control over and can't change it because you just haven't an understanding of it. That's why finding people like yourself speak plainly about this situation is just so refreshing and really engaging! It actually makes me excited to listen and learn because I know and understand what you are saying... It's that simple. Thank you for doing what you're doing. I hope it makes a big difference in this world.

So keep doing what you are doing well and remember to look after yourself in a balanced way... You can't do everything.... Lots of other people are doing their good work too. One of the unhelpful stories in our society is that we are all individuals. This is only partly true. It is revolutionary and more sustainable for our energy and getting stuff done to remember that we are also a social species and all of us are part of a larger communities too.... I really find this helpful to remember personally. Many thanks for all your great work.
