Maid in Lebanon: 'My employer treats me like a slave' - BBC News

2021 ж. 27 Ақп.

Hundreds of foreign domestic maids were dumped outside their embassies last summer in Lebanon after the families they worked for could no longer afford their wages.
The horrific scenes were a symptom of the country’s economic meltdown but also Lebanon’s use of foreign workers - a system which human rights groups say amounts to “modern-day slavery".
The BBC's Martin Patience has been speaking to domestic maids about their experiences and looking into whether their situation has changed.

  • THAT WHOLE particular region is not a good place to work overseas in any blue collar field. I’ve seen and heard one too many stories about the bad treatments that workers have to endure. I believe everything she is campaigning. There is not much to exaggerate. Sometimes, even when the abuse was sexual and you fought back, you ended up with capital punishment without any legal assistance. I always tell friends and employees, if they really need to work as a domestic worker abroad, try to avoid this region. It all seems glitz and glam from the outside, like you step into the future. But, the people still have a mindset from 1400 years ago. The people are repressed and stuck up. I’m a male and visited supposedly the “holiest” country in the region where millions gather there every year to witness first hand the sexual harassment. That happened on the second day of my visit and I came there as a tourist when that country just opened up for non-pilgrim foreign tourists. He said he was khilaf, but he kept doing it until I told him there were cameras around and he stopped. The thing that I felt the most when it stopped was not anger or disgust, but pity. Because he must have done it out of repression. Anyways, don’t go to this region to work if you’ll work as domestic workers. Abuses are everywhere, that’s right, but the chances of being abused in this region is much higher than other places. Those people who have survived to tell their stories, they don’t make stories up.

    • Were they forced to be maids? Perhaps working conditions were even worse in their own countries? Employing people who have a sense of entitlement and who are constantly seething with resentment and love to hate their employers is never clever; it's not good for any family, especially not for children! Perhaps people should start doing their own housework, or they should employ "maids" from their own culture!

But middle class treating them very badly. So in this situation probably most rich will be able still keep their made, and middle class won’t . So all those people who mistreated them will have to clean their own shit. I’m saying the situation will fix itself... hopefully.

      @shortclips4267@shortclips42673 жыл бұрын
    • @@shortclips4267 Let’s have a look at human rights in all Arab countries compare with European countries. Even Muslims in those countries come to Europe bcs they know they will have a better life there. I don’t dislike muslim people, but I dislike this religion and I dislike the fact that this religion has very strong political and social ramification, unlike countries like UK where new stats show that majority of population identity as non religious. Let’s take Saudi Arabia for example, where women are categorised as second class citizens, where gay people are killed if they are cut having sex with a male partner, and so on. In fact countries like UAE are probably some of the most liberal among other Arab countries. I’m sure in other rich Arab countries those maids like that, workers, are treated even worst. And yes, perhaps you are right when u say that most of this people who have maids in Lebanon are Christians. Not like Christians are saints either, they did their share of injustices but at list In Christianity you don’t get killed for leaving the religion and being murdered for being gay. Also Lebanon is a country managed by a Muslim political majority, and like other Arab countries they can care less for workers/human rights. I know you may not be able to understand me how I say that I don’t dislike Muslim people but I say all this things about their religion and culture, most people believe that criticising someone culture and religion means attacking individual people. Quite the opposite, I like people very much, including those in Muslim countries, and I met many that were kind and friendly, however religion has the power of making a kind and friendly person behave in a particular way just because their faith says so, therefore is right so.

But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them. Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by others. “But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted". You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything, in Heaven above or in the Earth beneath, or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents up to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. If my people who are called by my name, humble themselves and pray, AND TURN FROM THEIR WICKED WAYS, I will hear from Heaven, will forgive their sins, and will heal their land. And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. This, then, is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. "Matthew 5-7 NIV Bible Gateway", we can use google search. These are the teachings, The Righteousness of our Lord Jesus Christ our God. REPENT, and start doing what is right. If you abide my teachings, you are really my disciples; then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. A time is coming and has now come, that the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and Truth. God is Spirit, so his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and Truth; they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. In the New Heaven and New Earth, only Righteousness dwells. May the Spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ our God be with you all.

    • @Maria Smith It’s not exclusive to the Arab world, most migrant workers live in deplorable conditions in Europe and the US, it’s not an “Arab issue”. There has to be laws to protect labour rights, they are needed everywhere to prevent the exploitation of workers. If there is no legal mechanism for workers to use then how will we hold abusers accountable? There has to be a legal framework.

  • Most Middle East countries have lots of negative treatment with maids or helpers even in HK. That slaves mentality from the Middle Ages. It’s high time the employer must be briefed up or given seminars on their responsibilities and sign agreements on conditions before they’re allowed to hire one. The household helps employees were already trained in their home country in their responsibilities. Include language for a better communication. NB: i heard from these women too that one master hired them but servicing other families. Without rest with high expectations on job performance and physically abused. Disgusting.

    @marierocher4422@marierocher44223 жыл бұрын
    • Problem is not briefing in the Middle East, basically all problems in that region is related to the law: it is not impartial, fair nor enforced. The law is only enforced in the Middle East to prosecute dissidents and activists who are perceived as a threat to whatever dictatorial regime is in power. If Middle Eastern countries would actually have had constitutions that were more than just a bunch of words on a piece of paper, we would not have seen these horrendous conditions that African maids have to suffer there. I visit the region every two years and you are absolutely right: it remains dispicable and disgusting to see how maids and other guest workers are treated in the region.

These are harmless people just to improve their lives not killers. They should define sharia and legal laws. Were working conditions even worse in their native countries? There's a strong possibility that they were! Employing those who love to hate you is NEVER clever! Countries and cultures go down like ninepins when those who love to hate their employers decide to stay and have offspring (because the grass is at least a few shades greener than in their home country?), possibly passing the message of seething resentment on to future generations! It's not healthy!

When I was visiting a family for lunch… I heard one lady crying, screaming for help… and punches, kicking. Everyone heard it very clear , the family said: oh a maid is being beaten up again in nearby building. Windows were open and you can hear so clearly and every neighbour knows what is happening. My heart was aching… I wanted to disappear. I wouldn’t be able to help in anyway because everyone owns guns. So if I went there and knocked on their door they will point a gun to my head. And anyways I wouldn’t be allowed to go their by the family. Just remembered seeing these poor ladies being mistreated brings tears to my eyes. Btw these maids wouldn’t be able to leave because family would be keeping their passports away from them. But I heard incidents such as some maids would find their passports in the house would steal some cash or gold and running away. And I don’t blame them because some wouldn’t get paid, instead being beaten up so they keep quiet and stay fearing the family they are working for. Heart aching.
