Flystrike In A Strange Place | Treatment and Shearing

This sheep had flystrike in an unusual place, up on it's neck and shoulder. Hopefully with Autumn in full swing our flystrike cases will slow down and stop for the season.

    • It is. I have been dealing with it for two years now. My doctor won’t believe me, my church doesn’t want to hear about it, and my husband doesn’t know what to do. He has it too, but my case seems to be worse. I don’t know anyone else that has it, (except for some stray cats that we recently started feeding, but we had it a while before my husband finally let me feed them. )but it’s horrible.

  • 6th generation cattle farmer from North Central Montana, most folks don't have a clue just how hard life can be as a farmer of any size. While my family farm is likely on a far larger scale with hundreds of head along with thousands of arable hectors of land even the smaller farms life isn't sunshine and rainbows. Seeing a hard working dedicated farmer like your self sharing their story and show just how tedious farm life can be I solute you. After having watched your videos for a while now I might head to a friend of mine who has a sheep farm down in Wisconsin. I would like to learn more about sheep tending and care along with maybe getting some practice in with sheering as I have heard it can be extremely taxing not only on the sheerer but the animal too hence the need to work fast but also be super accurate. Thank you so much for the insights I have seen with your videos #farmwithme. More farmers should use this platform to showcase where America's true wealth is made, on an American farm. Cheers and congrats on making it near 10k subs

  • My shearer today said it's not a weird place. When a sheep with footrot lies down, its rear feet touch its neck. If there are maggots in the foot cleft, these move to the neck with ease.

    • @@Connor6569 someone else said that the area around the shoulders is the most densely growing wool. Add in Texel. Add in matted wool. If it rains a lot and there is no time in between showers for the fleece to completely dry out, this creates a PERFECT base for eggs and maggots. That's why in Spring 2023, flystrike has been so common on the shoulders.

      @bbyng7316@bbyng731611 ай бұрын

When the dude used the sheers, the maggots got cut in a half, and then the spray, yes, it hurts when touches the wound, but it's like when you clean a wound: this pain passes. Without the product, the sheep perish. And isn't much thing to do with these kind of wound, I mean, put something over it causes infection, so the best idea is let their organism do their part. • It's the most effective way to control the sheep. You can't shear a sheep with her trashing around otherwise you could cause some serious harm with the shears.

    • Yes that's true, but we do have 70 acres of native forest on the farm. Maybe I'll do a video about all the different areas on our farm. Thanks for sparking that idea.

  • So the song "ba ba black sheep have you any wool" the deep meaning is about a flystrike turn a sheep into black? That's explain why they only have 3 begs full. Lot's of the sheep died perhaps? I don't know, just wondering.
