After days of speculation, on Wednesday it was announced that Adrian Newey will be leaving Red Bull in 2025. Arguably the greatest F1 designer of all-time, in 19 years with the team he has helped them win seven F1 Drivers’ and six Constructors’ Championship titles.
In a statement announcing his departure, Adrian thanked his 'close friend and manager' Eddie Jordan. On this week's FFS! podcast, out tomorrow, David Coulthard grilled his co-host about what he really knows about the situation.

  • I have a friend who knew both Ron Dennis and Adrian. He told me that Ron was always micromanaging at McLaren and Adrian was frustrated with having insufficient autonomy. Things finally came to a head when Ron came into Adrian's office one day, noticed that Adrian's desk was very untidy and angrily told him that he wanted the office tidied up 'or else'. Adrian handed in his notice shortly afterwards. Maybe Adrian doesn't work well when there is trouble and strife within the team. How many championship cars do you have to design before you feel the need for holiday and a chance to put your feet up?

  • I think it's likely that Adrian is going to Ferrari because that's the team pretty much everyone wants to work and drive for at some point in their career. The addition of working with Lewis might be a boost. I really wish he'd go to Aston Martin to help Fernando finally get a front running car again so he can battle it out with Max or whoever and hopefully win his third title. Aston is the 5th best team on the grid and what he's doing with that car is amazing. I can imagine his motivation being even greater with a top car.

  • This, for me, confirms what I've been saying all along. Newey is going to retire. He's been experiencing massive pressure for more than 30 years. There comes a time you're done with it. He's not as young anymore. Going to Ferrari would mean getting even more pressure compared to his previous endeavours at the other teams he's been at. The Tifosi as well as the Italian media who expect nothing but wizardry from him, and will be quick to burn him to the ground if Ferrari isn't close to winning the championship. And then the politics at Ferrari, something he has never really liked. I just don't see him working from a distance; the power of Newey is not just his pencil but also his understanding of aerodynamics. He can see, while looking at a car, what could work and what couldn't. This means he should be at the races to see and analyse what the other teams have done. Since he had his bike accident, he's looked very brittle. Horner also touches on this when he said how long it took for Newey to recover and how the other had to step up on that occasion. Again, Newey is old, 65 years old at the moment. It's unsure how long he has left to experience other things in relative well health. Going for a job at Ferrari would be a huge gamble given his age. Therefore, I think he'll retire and do odd jobs from time to time.

  • If he doesn't want to retire and wants a challenge I'd prefer he take his knowledge to audi or andretti, that way it would be more his design and not just tweaks to what ferrari have already done, but i reckon he's going to use the next few months to decide between ferrari or move on from f1

  • I once saw Eddie Jordan. It was an average week day at some time not long following the turn of the century. I still then practiced as a lawyer and Eddie was sat in 'concerned interlocution' with just some not so flamboyant shirt on his back and the location was in the cafe across the road from the main entrance to The Royal Courts of Justice in the Strand. Whilst we were both in the same room only on separate business the one remarkable observation aside from this being 'Eddie' was the profusion of underarm sweat then staining his shirt. I honestly don't think I have ever exhibited so much 'cold sweat' on anyone either before or since then? Goodness knows what Eddie looks like after one of his cycle rides - something I did 'stacks of' over in France and in the mountains from the late 1980s until the early 2000s. Here today I think we can call Eddie "The Wise Old Elf" (a Ben & Holly's Little Kingdom reference). Eddie did let the cat out of the bag. Adrian is just turning 65 and he's worked hard and under pressure and most successfully for all his working life. Here today the advice is properly to enjoy the more gentle side of life and RETIRE. Well done, Adrian. As with Eddie and David you have helped shape motor sports. I love this cheap, grunge and grass roots approach to reporting because F1 has today 'lost its hear' and those who love the sport as we all have need to work to bring it back down a peg or three. Otherwise, and as I have sadly found with this one category: When the fun stops, STOP.

  • this is just my opinion of course so shoot me down if im talking out of turn, my opinion is simple, Adrian newey has said the lure of Ferrari is strong regardless of what point in your career your at, and that he has came close to joining Ferrari on at least 4 occasions if memory serves me correctly. and Hamilton has joined them next season so honestly the possibility of working with Ferrari and working with Lewis Hamilton to achieve a 8th WDC is a massive pull for him. and i think the political struggles of red bull currently is not something Adrian newey likes. so conclusion all that combined i think because of the politics of red bull he will join Ferrari and work with Lewis Hamilton, lets all be honest the man is a masterclass in F1 car design any constructor would be lucky to have him.

  • The media want to make this all about Horner, and to wish Newey to Ferrari immediately to create a winning car for Hamilton. While in Newey's statement it sounds to some degree he is fed up with current F1, and wanted to leave Red Bull last year. While everyone assumes he wants to nail the 2026 regulations, maybe he wants to sit it out and see what 2026 F1 is like before considering another team. Just because he said he regrets not working at Ferrari and with Hamilton, doesn't mean he wants to jump straight into that. No guarantee that either of them fits well in the team, or that success comes immediately. Yeah, Red Bull nailed the '22 regulations, but they had years refining that design team exactly as they wanted it. Will Elkann interfere?
