The surprising secret to a healthier gut - Kathryn M. Stephenson and David L. Suskind
Dig into the science of fecal microbial transplantation, where doctors transfer feces into a patient to help reset their gut microbiome.
--
1,700 years ago, Chinese alchemist Ge Hong was renowned for his soup that could cure diarrhea-stricken patients. It had a surprising secret ingredient: feces. While it might seem unwise to consume feces, exciting new research suggests that taking poop into the body in other ways might benefit our health. Kathryn M. Stephenson & David L. Suskind share the science of fecal microbial transplantation.

I've had this done and it helped so much. The immune system really stems from the gut. Haven't really been sick much since 2019
That's great, I'm glad you're feeling better! But are you sure it is this specific procedure? The video literally said that the FDA only allows it to be used experimentally to treat one specific disease, so I wouldn't imagine it to be open to the general public.
Wow! Seems strange having someone else's waste inside you. So interesting
@@slinde657 facts
Where do you live? I need one as well. Ibs etc...
@@hman2912 I think if you look at it from another angle it looks like that's how things work. If you didn't deliver the waste artificially into the body it will be delivered directly or indirectly naturally. In some cases waste from humans, animals etc. end up in a river. Some of the rivers water is recycled back for human consumption. Some evaporate to the clouds and recycled as rain. So, whenever you drink water you will be drinking water that contain some parts that are from the poop or urine of someone.

They know about the spice. The spice Melange.
so basically, this is real life equivalent of South Park poop implant.
Basically, south park wasnt making sh$t up. Research on this has probably been going on for years. Now if only we could get our hands on The Spice Melange

I almost died from overgrowth (bacteria, yeast, etc) after lots of antibiotics for MRSA, and my gut/ brain haven't been even 10% of what they were before getting sick. After feeling like death every time you eat, and having everything exit you, like an extreme faucet within hours of eating, you would do just about anything for an improvement. A FMT is on my wish list- but in the U.S you have to almost die from c-diff multiple times, and it's around $15k last time I checked to have it done in other places :( (But would likely give me my life back).
I'm not a doctor, this comment is for entertainment purposes only, don't try this at home etc etc, Buuuut in one study the results were something like "8 patients cured and stayed cured for at least 6 months, one patient was not cured at the 6-month mark but was cured by a second dose, one patient did not return for the 6-mo followup, we reached out to him and found out it had worked great for 3 months but he relapsed, then he DIY'd a second dose with the help of his roommate and was doing great again."
If you are finding it hard to get it done in USA then I would suggest you to get it done here at Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences, New Delhi, India. I got it done three times although my disease was a liver disease(Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis) and ultimately had to undergo liver transplantation in 2021.
A case study in my Psychology textbook actually mentioned this! It helped improve a man's depression. It was cool to learn more about it. Thanks TED-Ed!

i used to get disgusted by the possibility or idea of various types of microorganisms living inside the gut but now i'm starting to accept and reconsider letting those tiny settlers stay inside me.

I am hoping that they do a trial with for long covid patients, since that is another illness that seems significantly linked to the gut. Prayers and love! ❤

In Africa, there is a soup made from dried animal poop called “Otwen bene nkwan”. Now I understand why
Ah, it’s exactly as I thought. But the poo bank was a new thing. Would like to know what the strict guidelines are to accept only 3% of donations. Is it like a strict diet and fasting? Do people apply? Can you just submit a sample and they’ll get back to you?? Will they in the future be able to identify these different gut bacteria and just do special selections for specific needs/ patients like an herbal medicine shop but with bacteria cultures? The possibilities. 😮🎉🎉
Very interesting. I saw somewhere, only yesterday, that neurotransmitters are produced in the gut and that, therefore, a healthy microbiome helps against depression and mood disorders. Is that true?
FMT has been probably one of the best decisions I have ever taken, I have improved so much and can tolerate foods I could not in the past after many years of antibiotics and useless probiotics.
That is so wonderful to hear. Did you order from a site or did you know your donor? Looking into this for severe gut issues.
Fantastic video!!
How does this compare to taking probiotic pills?

3:30 3% acceptance of donors means more than 97% of us need a transplant.
Exactly what I thought. Maybe we don't need transplant but it does show that most of us don't have healthy gut.
Mediterranean people have the healthiest guts or at least people who eat a largely Mediterranean diet.
I've been seeing adds on tv in my country about a problem wich is that a lot of children die from diarrhoea, this video start to makes sense now 🤔

Wow! That's interesting
This is why human babies need to feed directly from mom after birth; humans, like cows, produce colostrum for about a week after birth (with traces for some weeks after), and this provides the baby with immune system microbes. Breastfeeding, while it might make some of us uncomfortable (including me, and especially in public), is still very important for the health of the future of our species.

As did I. And more than just interesting, it's also incredible!
Is this actually a thing? I hear people with Parkinson’s have weird gut biomes, but that there aren’t many reliable studies that say eating poop capsules (a common trick some people suggest) will help at all, since they’re probably killed in the stomach.

The best way to avoid C-Diff is to take probiotics. By putting the good bugs back into the body. With C-DIFF only bad bugs are running rampant in your intestines what people don't realize is that Probiotics need a cold environment. And give them time to thrive in that environment by avoiding things that are warm or hot.
I'm surprised Ted-Ed didn't bring back the talking poop from their video about toilets.
