  • "The Little Princess" is definitely Shirley Temple's best film. She is not "cute" here, but dealing with a very dramatic/traumatic situation. Given a movie with a real plot and drama, Shirley Temple proves herself to be more than capable as a real young actress.

    • Books do not always translate to film successfully, and need to be altered to work for the medium. Film being a visual medium does not require text, and relies on what is seen and dialogue that enhances the characters and story for its own purpose.

With the exception of the two older girls, one played by Marsha Mae Jones, she was surrounded by British actors and American actors doing a British dialect. Sybil Jason, the little girl playing Becky being one of them. With this, a British atmosphere was created.

    • @@galaxygirl1932 You poor thing. I do hope you heal from your mothers hate and anger. Fathers love their children. And your screaming comment speaks volumes as to why when a father is dominated by his wife, the family suffers. When one has a father who’s wife allows him to lead the family. He teaches the child logic and love, to overcome emotions without being unhinged emotionally. Men aren’t supposed to be emotional. I wish you well.

      @larkatmic@larkatmic11 ай бұрын
    • @@larkatmicI agree so much with your first comment but I’m utterly perplexed by your reply. If men “aren’t supposed to be emotional” then how on earth can they love their children? Love is an emotion and a very important one. The idea that men can’t show or express emotions is an incredibly toxic mindset. Men are humans too. Humans have emotions. To deny them the right to express those emotions is wrong and can be psychologically harmful (especially in young boys, but also even olden men). And whoever “leads the family” has nothing to do with how a child is loved, unless there is something much deeper or complicated going on. Families come in all shapes and sizes and so does love. I feel horrible for the other commenter and the fact that they did not have a good relationship with their father, but neither you nor I should try to pretend like we know why.

      @jamiegdubois@jamiegdubois7 ай бұрын
    • @@jamiegdubois Good god. Of course most fathers have emotion. They love after all. My point was that men aren’t supposed to identify with emotions the way most females do. Most fathers are made to guide their children through logic, away from being in a constant state of emotion, which is the ego. The ego will take you down the wrong road, convincing you you’re on the right one. We used to know that concept. Many kids are being raised to embrace and stay in emotion, rather than overcome. That creates mental illness. I see it affecting so many young today because they were never taught to overcome what life throws at them. You are not your thoughts. And please don’t be triggered by what I’m about to say. Most men are logical thinkers and are innately loving, but non emotionally triggered. And many women gaslight men to know end, because they hate that about them. You can’t win when a woman wants you to be something you weren’t born to be. When a man does act out emotionally unhinged through (usually anger) towards a child or woman. He is not being a man, but is acting like a woman. This is just my lived experience and my education, being a graduate from the New School for Social Research. Smoke on it. I wish you well.

      @larkatmic@larkatmic7 ай бұрын

In the book version, Captain Crew was dead, but the man next door was some partner with Crew in the mines, that turned out not be a failure or taken by the enemy. He adopted Sara and Becky came to work for Sara as her personal maid. There was a version made for a British TV show, maybe BBC or ITV

  • Poor Shirley, her career at Fox was winding down. Her next film, Susannah of the Mounties, was her last money maker at that studio. Her next two films, Young People and The Blue Bird, both made in 1940 were financial bombs, which were unheard of for Temple films. Some child actors are able to make the transition from child to more adult roles, sadly Shirley Temple wasn't one of them.
