Now this was a surprise! It seems to be that Norway took a more... Norwegian approch to this years contestant for Eurovision 2024. Doing this reaction was exciting, and you will see why!
It is so exciting to watch and feel this performance!
A mixture of progressive rock with folk music, with a great drumming performance, excellent vocals and a guitar/bass duo that cannot stay one second without giving a great show. Norway always delivers the highest standars on music production and this was not an exception!
New favorite band, for sure.

This song is literally my favorite entry for Eurovision, EVER. This is the definition of music to me because it makes me feel alive, I don't know how to describe it, we can call it magic like you did. Love hearing reaction from someone who really knows his stuff !
You're right in a way. This song is something that comes once in a decade. Atypical for Eurovision it stands out so much. Personally it gives me euphoric feelings with great voice, arrangement, stage presentation. It does what a song is supposed to do - give you chills.
Absolute powerhouse ... should be in the top three if there's any taste left in this world.

LOL suspect it will do well, but the issue is SO MANY COUNTRIES are bringing among the best entries in their history - at least since 2000 at least. Norway, Ireland, and a couple others are brilliant and original, but I'm afraid the vote will fragment massively and make things very tricky.
The song is based on a 1000 year old folklore telling the tale of an evil stepmother who turns her stepdaughter into various items like a needle, sword and horse, for all the people in the kingdom to use. When the stepmother finds out that the people like her she turns her into a wolf and curses her to wander the forrest alone. The only way to break the spell is to drink her brothers blood. One day the wolf finds the stepmother in the forrest and eats her heart, the stepmother was pregnant, therefore she drank her brothers blood and broke the spell. The instrument is called a Nøkkelharpe, key harp. A traditional music instrument. Gunhild also uses "kulokk", in some elements. Which is how the maidens used to call the cows back in the mountains. Your format of reacting to this is exactly what more people need to be doing. Listen to it first without stopping, then do a second listen where you pause and explain your thoughts and feelings. This is going to sound extremely pretentious, but I'm so tired of other reactors pausing and pausing during critical parts of the song on first listen, it just tells me they don't actually *get* music. I really liked this, good job. As others have said, the lyrics are based on a very old medieval tale. The lyrics are in a relatively old version of a specific dialect, so it doesn't translate well with deepl or google translate.

I love the fact that Gåte are actually singing in old Norwegian. It feels so authentic to the culture and the song feels very original as well as its a mixture between rock and folk and electronica.
They sing in norwegian, Norwegian language have 2 written parts, you have Bokmål that is more like Danish written language, so that is why Danish and Norwegian (bokmål) looks alike, then you have what we call Nynorsk, this is a compilation of dialects made to written form. While there is only one norwegian language, it have many dialects and she sings in dialects... but if you see the lyrics written then they are written in Nynorsk. These dialects are very old, they are closer to Icelandic and norse than Bokmål, so if you can recognise many icelandic words that sounds similar when spoken in dialect. Norway have 2 languages ... Norwegian and Sami .. that is the official languages of Norway 🙂

@@chaidie7056In the interest of accuracy, no; the old lyrics weren't from the middle ages, when Old Norse was spoken in Norway. Not even Middle Norwegian. It's from the 19th century, which places the song in the modern era culturally and linguistically. This doesn't mean that present speakers of modern Norwegian necessarily would be expected to understand this dialect with its unusual forms and archaic sounding words, people who didn't shouldn't feel too bad.
@@ErikHolten Yes, you are absolutely correct - my mistake. The tale itself probably dates back to the middle ages, but it was recorded in written form in the 19th century. I did also find a Swedish version of the tale that seems to have been recorded in the 17th century
The guitar player usually throws his guitar up like that during their shows, btw :) It's kind of like a signature move
I rember seeing them live in a super small show (HSH - HAUGESUND STORD HØGSKULE) and Magnus was standing/balancing on the fence separating the band and the audience while playing. Him and the band is INSANE live. I have been to Rammstein in Olso with over 60 000 people, but I honestly might put the little Gåte college stage size performance over that. The energy was just insane.

@@patroden: Also, to walk the forrest means something in Norwegian history. Today you would say that you had been sentenced to be stripped of all human rights. It was a really brutal punishment. Anyone could rape you or brutalize you or kill you and nobody would be allowed to stop it or revenge it. That's why they called them "forrest walkers", because they had to hide from everyone.

You should definitely see them live. They are one of Norway's most praised live acts. I've seen them 3 times. The first time was actually at a quite small stage at Roskilde Festival 2003, but that concert blew me away!
+1 on this! I've been a fan of Gåte for over 20 years, but only got to see them live for the first time now in November, and it was just a crazy good show! Very different and unique, and very, very good!
I was in the arena when Gåte won the national final in Norway. It was truly spectacular and the crowd LOVED it.
and I was very happy that being held in Trondheim, it was more accessible to people form the far north. It is a lonnnnnggg drive to Oslo or even Bergen, and a flight just for the one or two nights costs a bit too much. Trondheim *was* the ancient capital as "Nidaros", and that's where the national Cathedral is, as well as the burial/coronation of the Monarchs. I visited Trondheim for 2 days in 1988, and watch a Norwegian win a gold medal in Olympic Wrestling while I was there.... you would have thought they won the FIFA world cup the reaction was so crazy..
Great video! I love that you play the song in its entirety before going into analysis mode. It’s so unnatural to pause it when hearing it for the first time. I’m also obsessed with this song and band. I’ve played their EP “Vandrar” over and over again after hearing Ulveham ❤️

The feeling you get is the primal power they based the band around. The text is about 1000 years old. It totally blew my mind when first heard the song and especially teh live performance. She is leaving all the vocals left on the stage here, It is a very hard song to sing and on teh interview afterwards she is all pumped for breath. Thanks for a great react.

To help you with the lyrics: This is an old Norwegian tale. A young maiden, whose mother died in child birth, is being abused by her evil stepmother. She is turned into a needle, a knife and a sword. Everyone appreciates her in all these forms, as she is being used to create clothes and also participate in war. So the evil stepmother turns her into something even worse - a wolf - and the spell will not be lifted unless she drinks her brothers blood. Later, despite her old age, the stepmother becomes pregnant. The young maiden, now a wolf, knocks her off the horse on her way to church. She tears her up, rips out her heart so the blood sprays everywhere. She is finally able to drink her brothers blood, lifting the curse.
This is a real band. Folk rock with metal elements and the chorus here is actually a «cow call». A tune sung by a woman that sang to group together cows on the pasture for like 100 years ago plus.

We don’t know how old the fairytale is, only that it’s at least medieval. Her vocalization and singing technique, however, could very well be even older than the Viking age as peasants have been calling their cattle home from grazing using a very specific singing technique since forever.
Old tales were usually quite dark. Over time, they have been adapted to children, and much of the original has been changed.

There are actually two versions of this song's lyrics, a full version and a shorter version.The one you found online is the longer version, while the one used in the Eurovision song is actually the short version. The longer version of the song, which I'm guessing is the original, hasn't actually been released anywhere, probably because of Eurovision's rules against using previously released songs. The lyrics are based on an old folk ballad that exists in many different versions, or arguable two similar ballads that exists in multiple different versions, depending on how you want to divide it. Here's translations of both versions, longest one first: Eg va meg so liti ei møy / I was so little a maiden Mi moder ho monne på barseng døy / My mother on a bed of pine needles died [The word for "bed of pine needles" is an actual thing, but in this case it might be a corruption of or euphemism for "barnseng" or "barselseng" which is any bed someone lays in when they give birth, meaning the mother died in childbirth.] Mi stimoder skapt meg i gangari grå / My stepmother made me into [literally: created me in] a riding-horse grey Så sendte ho meg ti kongens går / Then she sent me to the king's farm Så skapte ho meg i eit liti svær / Then she made me into a little sword Ho bau meg fara i mannefær / She asked me to... Well, there was first a short version of the medieval text (as in the MGP semifinal). Then they wrote a new short version because the text had to be a new one. So the short version that you render here is their shortened paraphrase of the medieval text.

The instrument is Key harp/ Keyed fiddle / Nøkkelharpe / Nyckelharpa / Schlüsselfiedel Als NYCKELHARPA wird allgemein jedes Instrument bezeichnet, das mittels eines Bogens angestrichen wird, bei dem die Tonhöhe aber durch eine Tastatur - ähnlich wie bei einer Drehleier - verändert werden kann. Andere Namen sind Nyckelgiga und Nyckellspel. Michael Praetorius bezeichnete das Instrument als Schlüssel Fiddel. Das Wort Nyckel ist Schwedisch und bedeutet Schlüssel. Harpa wird für Seiteninstrumente allgemein, aber besonders für fidelähnliche Instrumente verwendet.

They are amazing live. Last concert I went to, the lead vocal was seven or eight months pregnant. They still put together an amazing show. They captivate you entirely.

I've seen them live and it was one of my top 10 gigs of all time. Very powerful experience not unlike what you just watched. I've been a fan since the mid 2000s
The chorus is a «lokk», thats used to call on your herds. This «lokk» is a old as well, they recorded it and the beginning of the song is a sample of the «lokk» and in the chorus she sings it. It has now lyrics just sounds. The singer Gunhild is calling for all good powers!
Kulokk is based on words, but usually the words are shortened over time, so it can be difficult to hear exactly what is being sung. "Kom no koa/Come on cows" is an example, and which I think could be the starting point for the vocalization here. Another example is "komma, komma kyra", which I have actually used myself when I visited an old relative as a child, and we were out to bring the cows home for milking.
There ate better translations out there. Gåte is a folkrock band. The lyrics are a version of a 1000 year old song. Sort of a version of snow white. Evil stepmother is jelous of the maiden as she is sent away to the kings court. The stepmother turns her in to a needle and then a sword but she is still loved by everyone so the stepmother turns her in to a wolf cursed to forever roam the dark woods. To free herself from the curse she will have to drink her brothers blood. The maiden/wolf finally breaks the curse by killing the stepmother ( who is pregnant with the maidens half brother) and so drinks the blood of her brother… The melody of the original song is lost but the text is preserved. The tradition of very long tales in many verses and repetetative choruses while people join hands and dance in a row is still alive on the Färö islands.

I think some drums sneak through the guitarist's backing vocal mic on the fills but yeah they're not allowed to mic up the kit itself This happened in 2009 when Alexander Rybak played Fairytale, most of the violin playing actually was picked up by his mic
Great video! Gåte has got so much good music, you're right to subscribe to their channel! I've been a fan for almost as long as they've existed as a band. A good start to follow up Ulveham are the newer songs "Svarteboka ft. Djerv" and "Huldra". Then you can go into older stuff like "Knut Liten Og Sylvelin (Iselilja)", "Du Som Er Ung", and "Sjå Attende" - which have a different(yet familiar) sound. ;) Honestly, they've got a ton of great music!
I think this song is a love letter from modern Norway to Neo-romanticism era Norway. It's all about painting a picture of a fairtytale Norway ( The trolls killing people and Hulder-women kidnapping men in the mountains fairytale, not the typical happy fairytale). Gives me mad goosebumps listening to it, but understandably not something to win Eurovision. Love from Norway

The instrument is a NØKKELHARPE. Swedish origin. My grandfather built violins and the "nøkkelharpe" was quite time consuming :-) The sound is kind of "layered" as if several violins play simultaneously. Very beautiful. I loved listening to it, as a child ❤ I see someone has already translated the song for you. 👍 ULVEHAM means "wolf's hide" or "skin" or "the guise of a wolf". (The maiden in the song is transformed by a curse into a wolf, so it's sort of a werewolf, but not the modern concept of it 😅 ) It's based on an old, really oooold fairytale... It would be fun if Norway won this year, with a song based on a fairytale, cause last time we won, the song was called "Fairytale". And then "Nocturne" in '95, which was a sort of lullaby 😊 Oh! And the band: they're great in concert!

You can have some taped backing vocals in ESC these days. There's limitations, but those are all about making it easier for the jury to judge the live main vocals. Those "demonic chants" are not going to be a problem, no one will confuse them for the main vocals :)

I love the setting on stage. Elegant. Compliment the music without getting in the way of the music. It gives the "supernatural" emotion that support the lyrics.

In order to helkp educate people about the proper way to say the Italian band's name, I spell it out as "Moaneskin", to indicate the O sound needs to happen.

I have seen so many of Gåtes concerts, and both the bassist and the guitarist would have done pretty much the same in every concerts LIVE ! :) If you are able, go to their conserts, I promise you an amazing experience :)
Amazing reaction as always! Interesting how you mentioned the alternative rock from the early 2000s (Muse is also one of my favs!), as Gåte was pretty big here in Norway around that same time! Gunhild (the vocalist) was only 13 or 14 when she joined the band back in 1999. They won quite a lot of music awards here in 2002-2005. I was stoked when I heard they were going to participate this year! So the song itself is derived from an old folk tale (the original lyrics were taken from a 1000 year old ballad, but they had to change it due to the rule of "originality" of the ESC). The tale is about a beautiful girl ("møy") who has an evil and jealous step-mother. The step-mother turns the girl into different things to make people love her less. But every time, people seem to still love her (e.g. one time she is turned into a sword, but everyone seems to prefer to use that specific sword). In the end, the step-mother turns the girl into a wolf, which is one of the most hated creatures of the time, and cursed her to stay as a lone wolf in the woods until she would "drink her brother's blood". The story ends with the girl killing the step-mother by biting her belly. The step-mother so happened to be pregnant with the girl's half brother - thus she "drank her brother's blood" and turned human again. Not a very well-known folk-tale, but pretty interesting!
The å is an AW sound. So it's more Gaw-Teh. It's a 1000 year old folktale and they are singing in Nynorsk (and possibly a dialect) which is the lesser used official Norwegian language, so online translators have a really hard time with it. Here are the lyrics. She can only break the curse if she drinks her brother's blood. The step mother was pregnant when she attacked and ate her and she unknowingly did drink her unborn brother's blood, and thus break the curse. I hope that helps.
There is only one norwegian spoken language, many confuse our two written ways of Norwegian, that is Bokmål (From the danish language) and Nynorsk that are a mix of many dialects ... So she sings in a dialect yes, from the place she is from or somewhere she have learned, she did graduate in Kvading or what it is called.
She doesn't sing in her own dialect.

Regarding the name of the band, Gåte (pronounced gaw-teh) means riddle or enigma. Since you mentioned Måneskin, I must say that when I heard the name of the band, I first thought it was a Danish or Norwegian band since the word "måneskin" is Norwegian/Danish for moonlight.
accounting for evolutin in pronunciation patterns versus spelling, it is the equivalent of "Moonshine" (from the light of the moon) in English.. As a Linguist/polyglot I noticed that immediately. Hell the Swedes would actually pronounce it as "Mohnesheen"
btw the illicit liquor is called Moonshine, because of the fact of those with their illegal stills up in the mountains going and doing their work on them at nighttime.
Fun fact 1995 when Norway won they played the key harp the song Nocturne with almost no lyrics. This is our favorite, we are Swedish, and proud that we send the Norvegian twins too compete for us.

Gåte’s music is a dark, mesmerizing and stunningly beautiful take on Nordic folk. Where they flirt with elements from traditional Norse and pagan music as well as from more modern genres like rock and industrial. The chorus is a socalled KULOKK, - the maiden calling the cattle in from the the mountains. The roots of this song is a thousand years old.

The string instrument is a 'nøkkelharpe', lit.: "Key harp". The instrument, stemming from the Middle East, came to Scandinavia in the late 14th/early 15th century via Italy and Germany. And it is likely that the hurdy-gurdy and the nøkkelharpe has a common earlier musical ancestor. :) It is more often used in Swedish folk music, but in some parts of Norway it has had its day in the sun. A "starter" nøkkelharpe (typically produced in Italy) is costs €2500-3000, easily €6000+ for the "good" ones with extra options. These guys have been around for about 25 years now, with some lineup changes, and a hiatus some time 'round the 2010s. The singer, Gunnhild Sundli, was only 14-15 years old when she joined the band, after her older brother had been a founding member (has now quit the band), and she was still a teenager when they had their full album release debut in 2002.

Gåte is one of Norways best livebands, they give us maximum magic on every single concert🤩
about throwing a guitar XD remember one big Japanese band Luna sea, there is an awesome guitarist Sugizo and during concert, there was something with his guitar and he threw his beautiful guitar across a huge stage. It landed perfectly at the end of the stage, that staff could take it. I'm glad that he didn't kill any staff.
The lyric is based on and destilled from an old Norwegain tale about a maiden who lost her mother when she was born, but later gained a stepmother. The stepmother was so jealous of the girl that she transformed her into a sword that she placed in the king's courtyard. However, the girl’s good qualities persisted even in the form of a sword. All the finest knights and soldiers favored this sword, so the jealous stepmother changed the maiden into a needle. The best and most skilled tailors loved this needle and preferred it over all the other needles. The stepmother grew even angrier and transformed the girl into a wolf, cursing her to roam the forest forever unless she drank her brother’s blood. And so it was. The maiden roamed the woods as a wolf. For eight years, the stepmother stayed indoors, afraid to venture out because she knew the wolf-clad maiden was out there. But then the stepmother became pregnant and wanted to go to church. The wolf pounced on her, seized the stepmother’s blue cloak, pulled her off her horse, tore out her heart, and drank her blood. With that act, the curse and spell were lifted, and the maiden returned to her original beautiful self, heading back to her father’s home.

For me personally Gåte are a band that stands for pretty intense musical craftmanship. I always feel like the group members are so skilled in opening up each experience. They have such variety of songs, from traditional Norse folk to progressive rock. This song to me is about grasping life, going further than limitations, the wolf anima within all of us. I am a norwegian living in sweden, actually only 5 minutes on my bike from the arean wher they will stage the Eurovision. When I forst heard this song I thought they send this so Norway will not stage next years final. But now after listen to it a few mor times its goose bumbs everytime! If qwe dont win this year , we will never win..Norwegen zwölf punkte, Norvege douce point!

you need to discover eivør pálsdóttir from the faroe islands. a classically trained sopran and owner of a masters degree in traditional nordic vocal techniques. she also made music for the computer game god of war and the netflix series the last kingdom. just to name two tracks: the last kingom main theme live or falling free live at the old theater in tórshavn. faroese and icelandic are the closest languages to old norse

I saw Gåte on a live stage in the magical valley/forest in Storås here in Norway. It was fucking epic, AND Wardruna and Kalandra played there too. I really really really recommend you reacting to those bands also. I've seen Gåte a few times and their stage presence is the best I've seen. At least in the upbeat/rock scale. Wardruna is amazing for epic norse inspired atmosphere. They use dang cool instruments too.

Nice reaction! as you saw, its a singback track, only main vocal are live, they are not allowed to play full band live in the esc. Its only the main singer that is live in the esc. The band Gåte is a very good live-band, so i guess if they could choose they would have choosed to play live.
