  • I just realized one reason why your declutter/editing videos appeal so much and make so much sense to me: I'm a librarian. Weeding collections is a basic tenet of the work we do: an unweeded collection is one that people don't want to use, and there's no room for growth or curation. A well-weeded library is a happy, well-used library, and your videos reflect this same principle 🙂

  • Long time listener, first time caller. I am not into makeup at all, or substantially clothes, so I'm always doubly glad for videos like these! But also, as a fellow appreciator of beautiful things who also wants mindfulness in my life and choices, I've long appreciated how rigorously you interrogate your own mindfulness and choices. Your journeys and decisions gives me different framework for my own sustainability efforts, and provide language and reasoning to use with friends who struggle much more than I do with acquisitiveness and the hollow envy this can create. So, continuing thanks for that. I'm a quilter, and this year I set myself the challenge/goal to use as much from my "stash" as possible rather than running to the store every time I start a new project or have a new idea. I've felt a similar "oh, hello you!" thrill while going through fabrics I bought months-to-years ago, falling in love with them all over again while thinking about how to integrate them into a quilt I only that day envisioned, and enjoying the deep satisfaction of appreciating them all over again while finally giving them their purpose in a finished piece.

    • I'm sew garments and I really relate to this. A special occasion recently came up and yesterday I found myself tempted to buy new fabric for a dress for this event (and beyond; the idea being that the event would be the motivation to get an already-planned summer dress finished earlier). I instead made the conscious decision to go through the fabric I already own instead, and to effectively shop my stash. As you say, it reminds me of the love I have for, and the thrilling potential of, these things already in my possession.

  • I have found myself going in the opposite direction. As I explore my no buy year, I find myself leaning into color, and print, shape, form. In my clothes and my home. I felt an ache for maxing out color in at least one piece of every outfit. A friend mentioned that since I am at the end of over a decade of a health crises, that I crave things that may scream a bit, I AM ALIVE! My minimalist daughter is having fits trying to rein me in lol! 💥🌟💥

    • This makes so much sense to me. I've always worn vibrant colors and patterns. Kind of known for it in my circle. But after my divorce, I started wearing black. Head to toe, it became my uniform unknowingly. I'm also chronically ill, so I understand the heaviness that can come with a health crisis, and need for a paired down wardrobe. I didn't realize I was only wearing black until I felt the urge to buy a plain white top, and I realized that I had been wearing "mourning clothes" subconsciously. Now I'm incorporating other neutrals more often, but idk if I'll ever gp back to my fun funky vibrant outfits. I think I've outgrown that phase of fashion in my life.

    • Minimalist doesn't mean No Color. Minimalist doesn't mean beige and white and black. It means culling to the essential. For example: 3 sweaters, 4 pants, 2 skirts, a dress...and they all work together to create myriad outfits that you love. The dress might be electric blue with zebra stripes, but it works with the other pieces.

You’re talking about lifestyle minimalist, where you minimize the things in your life. HLP and the commenter are talking about aesthetic minimalism, which is a style of visual minimalism, with its origins in the minimalist art and decor movement of the mid 20th century. 😊

  • I watch a fair amount of fashun content, everything from no-buy mimalists like Alyssa Beltempo to maximalists like Carla Rockmore and honestly I feel like HLP's wardrobe/styling videos are really excellent. I think the reason I love them so much is that it is the product of months of thoughtful "navel gazing" on the topic instead of listicles, hacks and other algorithm preferred garbage. I recently found a trunk that I packed away before our last move (twenty years ago!) and it's like finding a capsule of Y2k pieces that fit my eclectic style and my body, which is perpetually changing. I do store a lot of my vintage clothes, especially things that are for special occasions that shouldn't live on a hanger indefinitely. It regularly gives me that "sense of abundance" when I take a look in that storage. It's like I have a small, curated vintage store in my house.

    • I love Carla Rockmore, but I definitely don't have her lifestyle, body, or closet space. I just discovered HLP and minimized my closet by removing all my prints and colours. Suddenly my wardrobe doesn't look overwhelming anymore. I am a summer palette with natural silver hair, though, so I need to rethink all my black tops so I flatter my soft coloring. Thinking out loud now, I may replace black tops with my solid pastels and see how I feel about the collection.

    • I'm also short and verging on plus, so I may minimize my neutrals further by ensuring the pieces I keep flatter my figure. HLP taught me -- at 54 -- that my winter bottoms need to work with my winter boots that I wear five plus months of the year. This is fun, the opposite of the soul crushing feeling i used to have about my closet! Thank you, Hannah!

  • It was really interesting hearing you say about the joy of finding a piece again that you had put away because it made me think of toy rotation 🙂 I rotate my toddler's toys, keep most in the garage and just bring a few out each week and put last week's back in the garage. That way he never gets bored, he's always pleased to see one of his toys back again. It's a common thing to do and works really well. What you described sounded like wardrobe rotation 🙂

  • I tend to dress more aesthetically minimal in the cold seasons, cause all the layering makes it so that you have to wear a lot of pieces at once and they somehow need to go together. Plus, warm clothing tends to be a lot more expensive and you will want to keep it for longer and for it to be more timeless, like your 2-3 wool and down coats or my one cashmere scarf. When it's hot it's much easier to just throw on a dress and call it a look, and for that I do still love color and pattern! But also need an all black and all white dress for the summer ;) I hope you're still gonna like and wear your dresses and feel refreshed by their whimsy instead of annoyed with their business. I find I can very much appreciate the two different characters of the cold and warm seasons that come out :)

  • I can see aesthetic minimalism being really helpful in choosing outfits if your style isn't otherwise consistent enough to make mixing and matching things easy. My wardrobe is definitely more on the maximalist side, but all the pieces I'm drawn too really strongly fall into a similar style/aesthetic, so it's pretty easy for me picking out outfits every day.

    • Similar. I have a rainbow of shirts but they're all a very similar cut. I mostly wear jeans, neutral slacks, or neutral leggings. I have an absolute pile of sweaters, most of them cream, but I wear one of a rainbow of shirts under them and they add a pop of color in the V. All my cardigans are super colorful but I'm a firm believer all colors go together. Summer is the easiest though. ALLLLLLL the printed summer dresses and maxi skirts with solid color tops. So Easy.

  • Hooray for another insightful analysis and corrective to our commercial culture's "more will always make you happier" propaganda! After a weight loss I did a monster clothes edit using the "sparks joy" and "fits me now" criteria. Left with a pretty minimal assortment - both aesthetically and in volume, I've added a few new pieces over the last year - but LOVED the visual space/breathing room and ease of decision making in my small closet. I did start to miss visual satisfaction since it's a really tight color palette in there now, but found total visual glee by wallpapering inside my closet with a juicy, satisfying wallpaper and adding cedar paneling to the back wall for extra luxe. The whole project cost less than a pair of boots and now I feel so content each time I open those doors. Now I have both less AND more.

  • You've been helping me a lot with shopping. I don't have an "automatic no" but instead I roleplay as a salesperson and try to "sell" the garnment to myself. My immediate thought in a store usually is : oooh, nice english lace blouse. My second one is : sell it to me then if you like it. And that's when I usually realize that I like the garnment for what it is, but not on me. And I won't be wearing it without a tank top under because it is transparent. And It's not even my aesthetic. I'll probably wear it 3 times before decluttering it. I don't even like english lace. I eat way too many sauces on a daily basis to be allowed white. If it still passes this initial phase, then I try it on. If there is one little thing I don't like, it's an instant no then. I refuse to compromise. If the top rides back up whenever I move, I don't care how much I liked it. It's still a no. I've stopped buying clothes I find "okay" or "good" this way. If it doesn't make me jump in excitement and feel like the prettiest thing, it's a no. And to be honest, it has made shopping difficult because I rarely find that one piece but getting dressed so easy as I mostly have clothes I would probably wear until my death.

    • @@vanessaveeford Don't we all have that one thing we easily fall for not matter what lol. For makeup I usually ask myself a lot of questions like : do you really like the finish, is it compatible with your skin type, do you have a similar enough color that works for you already, why would you need another brown shadow for, do you really see yourself wearing periwinkle on your eyes or do you just like the idea ? Would it fill a genuine gap in your collection ? Why look for the next best thing when you already like what you have ? Be honest with yourself, that is my number one rule. Maybe you will eventually wear blue eyeshadow but if now isn't the time then you shouldn't push it. It's really hard sometimes because you would never see me walk empty handed from a Sephora. But I do now and I love my makeup collection more than ever because I have a better understanding of what I like and what I want.

  • I think what you've found in your more curated closet is what interior designers would call, "transitional design." You're working with a color palette you love with occasional pops of color and print that don't fit the "theme" but compliment it. There are fun textures and finishes that layer with staple elements to create a visually interesting landscape. Your face sweater, ruffled top, printed skirt, color blocked bag, blue sweater, etc are all those POPS that compliment the overall narrative and something I noticed you doing that a LOT of the models and bloggers you've been featuring don't do is mixing fabrics. Knits, weaves, Sleek fabrics with sheen, & soft, matte fabrics are all playing together to create interest, even in the monochromatic looks. You're pairing a linen? shirt dress with fairly shiny boots when the "safer" choice is espadrilles or simple canvas keds. Also, please keep playing with color and mixing color in unexpected ways. It's such a low-effort way to have a lot of fun while still looking absolutely chic with an element of avant-garde. And I am DYING to see that blue sweater with a pair of taupe or brown twill paints and a pair of classic pumps. I'm so glad you bought that sweater! It's simple in style and "pattern" but in your wardrobe, it acts as such a pop and it's absolutely wonderful. I also feel like if desired, a great place to bring print back in without overwhelming the core wardrobe is with accessories. My aunt (in her 70s and the most chic woman I have ever had the pleasure of knowing) has always dressed in a way I've described above with your mindset of fewer things of higher quality & her accessories were always where the statement was made and a scarf run under the label of a jacket or tied on a bag handle was just 🤌🤌🤌

  • I'd love to see a video where your flip the script and try full on maximalism, especially since you have so many wonderfully printed summer clothes. Maybe 2-4 weeks worth of this idea? With dresses being a single clothing item it might make things easier than needing to create full outfits.

  • That’s fascinating! In Montessori parenting the same method is applied: Toys are at eye level to the children, and everything is out kind of decoratively, so it’s easy for them to put away themselves, unlike “out of sight out of mind” toy bin dumping, whatever is out gets rotated so it remains minimalistic and simplistic, but remains interesting due to the rotation aspect. :)

I found that the only items I purchased for fall 2023 were a sweater and a new pair of boots to replace a worn pair. Cutting down to only the clothes we love helps us develop our personal style, thus, the new boots are very, very similar to the old ones.

All the rules about "if you haven't worn it in ___ years then you MUST part with it" bla bla. But a year ago I rebelled. I started doing exactly what you're doing, just putting certain items in limbo, sort of a time-out for an unspecified amount of time, when I want to see these pieces again I will know when the time is right. I envisioned doing this myself and have gotten rid of some. There is a lot of guilt on what I should do and what I am not doing. I don't want to live in that guilt anymore. Minimalism works for lots of people. It doesn't for me. I have stopped buying clothing and bringing in bags of it. I am wearing what I have, which is the aim. I think that whatever works to make a person's life better is a part of growth. I think if we don't ask questions of ourselves and test ourselves, we do not grow.

  • I can really recommend having a capsule wardrobe for your work/school days. It makes getting dressed easy and you at the same time don't wear your more special pieces to places where you don't really care about how you dress. Like save that special one-of-a-kind blouse for dinner with friends and wear the dime-a-dozen black sweater to school/work.

  • Hi Hannah, i also hope you could make another video about the best quality with natural fibers brands you've tried on and recommend, a list that we can build our wardrobe from.

  • My favorite minimal tee is a solid black tee that I thrifted. It doesn't have any tags or labels, not even a size. It feels like maybe a cotton bamboo blend? I love it and would actually like to buy more but it's not really possible lol. I bought some other black tee last year to supplement my wardrobe and it's just not the same 😂 So I agree it's generally easier to say no to buying things if you already have one, but also it's easier for me to say no to things if I can't see it matching the rest of my clothes and making it easy to create outfits. If the color doesn't look like a good fit, I can say no to it. I have a lot of fun printed skirts and I wear them with a solid top, but when I get a new piece I try to think about what color tops I would wear with it and how it fits in with my style.

  • Oh! I also wanted to say that talking about rotating clothes and not just for the seasons makes SO MUCH SENSE that I'm shocked others haven't thought of it. Parents do it with kids toys. Pet parents do it with pet toys. It makes things fresh again. It's honestly no different than what a lot of people do with their hobbies. I'm going to try this with certain parts of my wardrobe... particularly the clothes I keep because they fit when the rest don't. (health issues suck!) I also think it may help with the chunk of things I keep because I feel like I should keep them, even though I'm never drawn to wear them.

    @Chaotic_Pixie@Chaotic_Pixie Жыл бұрын
    • Yes! I do rotating wardrobe and it's the best fit for me. I live in the tropics where climate is the same all year round so I can't do seasonal wardrobe, so I do monthly wardrobe instead. It's a happy medium that has all the benefits of a capsule wardrobe, but also the variety because I get to shop my stash every month. Also I need to add that my clothes aren't neutrals, so it is possible to build minimalist wardrobe with colours.

      @inkasaraswati7625@inkasaraswati7625 Жыл бұрын
    • @@inkasaraswati7625 I completely agree! I barely have any neutrals in my wardrobe. Some slacks, a coat, a couple pairs of leggings, and jeans. Oh, and a pile of cream colored sweaters I pair with obnoxiously bright shirts under them 😅 but green leggings, pink sweater, blue shoes, purple hair tie, and turquoise purse isn’t uncommon for me.

      @Chaotic_Pixie@Chaotic_Pixie Жыл бұрын
  • I've been trying to fit into creating monthly capsules from my broader wardrobe with mixed success. When I do it, it's great, but it takes more energy to rebuild than I have these days. I'm going to try this softer approach and just banish/unbanish. This is lovely!

  • I’ve had a very similar experience. It started with me Marie Kondo’ing my whole house (as so many of us did and I still do a mini version of it every year) which of course included my wardrobe. I didn’t realize just how bloated it was with pieces that were literally of no use to me on any level. It resulted in me having a minimalist wardrobe, both aesthetically and numerically 😆. It was totally accidental. And same thing happened to me. I fell in love with it. My closet looked like a boutique. There was space to group things by category and colour with room for each item to breathe which made the whole space inviting and inspiring. Anyhow … ya. I have found that now when I decide I want to add a piece to my wardrobe, I’m looking at details much more intensely than ever before. What kind of cuff? Collar? Buttons? Fabric? Cut? Etc. all the details matter and they have to suit me perfectly or I don’t buy it. You just lose the ability to tolerate things you don’t absolutely love and what you absolutely love becomes more and more refined. It’s an interesting, very organic transformation. I still love some maximalism in my life, but it’s much much more curated now.

  • I really recommend putting "unwanted" stuff away for a while. I did this a few years back with all my knits, and then knits came back in style so I tried them on and found that I really liked that cozy feeling. So I'm very happy (esp economically) that I didn't donate them.

  • I moved about a year ago and lived with a small subset of clothes until recently (mainly from being overwhelmed and this seemed daunting but not urgent/important), and I got pretty sick of them, but when I finally unpacked the clothes it was actually really fun - it was like going shopping and seeing only clothes that i liked. : ) i really like this idea of putting some stuff away and occasionally going shopping in your own stuff, instead of the more harsh "get rid of everything" version where you might actually end up buying more things when you get totally sick of your 5 outfits or whatever. : )

    @rhettnichols6978@rhettnichols6978 Жыл бұрын
    • Oh also, as I finally unpacked I tried to "marie kondo" my clothes and had a bunch to get rid of that I hadn't worn in years, that were in boxes under my bed anyway even before I moved, and just hadn't dealt with clearing out. So that was good too. But now that I'm in the habit of wearing only a few outfits, I probably will do something similar to what you describe. Keep a small set in rotation but occasionally branch out and pick out something different.

  • I'm having a huge wardrobe clearout at the moment- I've removed around half of the garments as they are items which have either been a) worn out b) now too big or c) the result of a 3am binge spend and just never got worn. I've two huge piles- one is off to the charity shop/bin and the other is to be given to friends or sold online. I want fewer choices that force me away from my uniform of black band tshirt, jeans and boots and into something a bit more interesting. I live in a city in the UK where the outift choice of almost everyone, regardless of race, gender or background is black joggers, a black puffa jacket and black trainers, so I don't stand out too much with my choice of colour ;-)

Any tips on jow to keep a minimal summer wardrobe looking fresh and interesting?

  • The point on items not getting much use is very relevant sometimes, since my job is manual labour I keep work clothes separate from normal clothes but I don’t go out much and basically only wear loungewear. I’m sure I went a year never repeating items and kept feeling guilty for buying new things even though I wear the new items immediately after purchasing them and specially curate my pieces, I do repeat some things because I don’t have much in the category(like I’m sure I own like 7 pairs of shoes) but it does feel bad not getting to wear an item you’re really excited about more than once the year you bought it

  • I spent 5 weeks in Europe last year during the transitional seasons. 5 weeks in ONE medium size luggage. To say it the least, I did practice minimalism and capsule wardrobe. Lots of repetitive pieces and color, frequent laundry, almost identical style or shall we call that signature styling. Each piece was picked strategically as to function and fashion before the trip. Did I actually save time for outfit everyday? Maybe. But I spent more time laundering and ironing because Europeans line dry their clothes. Being a girl who is not necessarily the maximalism but owns decent amount of choices ( 20 years + collect and edit ). One thing for sure is the items I brought to Europe gets old. I love the pieces I handpicked. I appreciate when I wore them. But I was not looking forward to put them on after some time. After the trip, I cleaned all of them and put them away. In a way, I was really looking forward to come home to my other items waiting for me. It is all about how you feel. My closet makes me happy. I enjoy my functional, fun, fashionable, not full closet. Will I do it again this summer? 5 weeks in 1 medium size luggage? I will add one carry on at least. LOL. My gf is a fashionista. How many suitcases she brings to her trips? Her answer : 1+, less than 9.
