I know, I've been doing the math too. It's been more than 500 days since we've received new iPads and your guess is as good as mine as to why. What was once Apple's darling and actually Steve Jobs' final appearance on stage hasn't gone all too well ever since. That boom tables saw earlier last decade hasn't really recovered, and it might just be because there's a need for some more innovation. Yes, iPads are so powerful today that your MacBook Pro is now powered on its guts, but you can't deny their form has determined their function, regardless of how powerful, and that hasn't played in their favor. Maybe not launching iPads all through 2023 helped Apple go back to the drawing board? Only one way to find out. I'm Jaime Rivera with Pocketnow and it's time for another Deep Dive.

lets be real for a moment, 20-30$ is the cost per unit of oled screens when you order in massive order directly from the manufacturer.

Cost for shipping, assembly, system optimization, wage for workers. this doesnt apply only to apple, other brands too. eventho Apple did charge their "new innovation" higher price than their competitor, but we can't simply overlook.

Dude! Why so upset? If you want a tablet with a desktop OS, just get a surface or something else with windows on it. You aren’t buying it because it’s a horrible form factor for it. So you don’t need it on an iPad. “All that power” in an iPad Pro is an entry level MacBook Air with even worse cooling. If you don’t draw for a living this isn’t for you, and be happy you can keep that money for something else.

Imagine advertising a stylus that was not only mocked by its founder but then not being sold in the box but separate for 130 bucks 😂
A lot has changed in tech since Jobs mocked the stylus in 2007. If he were around today he would have probably changed his mind by now.
He mocked it on the iPhone. Not iPad. He made zero public comments about it regarding the iPad. His mind was able to be changed. He didn’t want the iPad mini, but approved it before he died.

If they found a way to make em cheaper and lighter that's a upgrade also foldable will definitely be taking ipad sales I use folding phone very useful for not taking and vivo have 8inch one I use z fold 5 as want latest software.
This is what I think. Ipad is fantastic technology that is relatively useless given the OS - For a consumption device, sure, the base iPad is great. But what exactly are we paying for when getting a PRO? The pro can't really do anything the base model can't. The M3 chip is great given a platform that can put it to use. Until Apple decides to give us a dual boot option ( MacOS or iPadOS ) with the ability to use desktop apps, I'm afraid most updates to the PRO will be in vain. My 2018 iPad pro works great, and unless Apple gives me some really useful ways to put the M3 chip to use, why bother spending 2K for a paper weight.
That's how Apple gets you. They don't care about fulfilling their customer's needs. What they care about is making you spend as much money on their products. Need a desktop solution? There's Pro, Studio and iMac. Oh, but you require studio level productivity? MBP. So why not a 2-in-1? Best we can do is step down to the tablet line with the Folio, where the iPads can then function *like* a 2-in-1. If Apple does release a 2-in-1, it will definitely cannibalize Mac sales across the board. Imagine if there's a 14 inch 2-in-1 with a thermally limited M3 Max chip. The professional now has no incentive to buy the Studio or MBP with the M3 Max (which are much more expensive). So, you force them to get the MBP if they so desire a portable desktop OS AND the iPad if they also want to consume content in a tablet form factor. If profits go down, the stock price goes down and shareholders (not just those on the board, but those of the general public as well) get upset. But to Apple and Cook's defense, iPadOS is really designed to be the tablet fork of iOS. i(Pad)OS would be a hassle to navigate with a mouse (See Windows 8 for the most pertinent example, but videos between M2 iPad Pro and Surface Pro 9 also bring this up), whereas macOS would be a hassle to navigate with a stylus, not to mention with your fingers. Imagine trying to click on MacOS's three balls with your finger, especially if you have large hands. There really is something to be said about the UX/UI comfort of moving your fingers/wrist only millimeters on the trackpad/mouse for the pointer to accurately move inches on the screen. If iPadOS got desktop apps as it is, I'm sure having movable windows would be a hassle against the home screen. Imagine trying to move the window or resize it only to tap on one of the apps on the home screen (Maybe Mac users with filled desktops can share their experience). Sure this can be mitigated with a mouse option or Apple Pencil's hover function, but it would be awkward with hands and fingers. I'm all for turning the higher end iPads into viable 2-in-1s with seamless user utilization between tablet apps and desktop apps, but there's a real practical OS/GUI argument that needs to be addressed. Thinking about it, maybe a practical dual boot is viable. The SoC runs natively on MacOS, but iPadOS is also embedded in it, with iPad's functions taking precendent. The home screen would have a widget to access Laptop mode. If you have a folio, the OSes would automatically detect if it is attached, and would wake up with the corresponding OS. I guess then the issue would be dealing with the parasitic power loss and OS load, then as well as neutered processing power and RAM.
@@munmunyee I think what we are saying is pretty much the same. For content consumption let's be honest, most people aren't forking over nearly 2K to watch youtube videos on a high end iPad pro. We are at the point where the PRO hardware just doesn't match the software and people are fine keeping their iPads for YEARS.. much longer than most would typically keep a Laptop. I still have a 2018 iPad Pro and it's great! I love it! But, nothing apple could really release right now that could get me excited to pay $1500 for a new PRO. Where would i see the performance gain? Honestly, If I needed to upgrade today I would just get a refurb unit with extended warranty on Amazon. Apple could just make a larger iPad, give it a name like "Apple Slate" or whatever and make it a 2-in-1 alternative to the MacBook Air with Dual boot. I think the argument that people wouldn't buy the MacBook if you give the iPad Mac OS doesn't really make sense. I mean, sure, right now they might grab a MacBook Air and low end iPad.. or for the same price get an iPad Pro that can run both OS's - By the time you add keyboard and apple pencil the cost is going to be quite similar.

There’s nothing wrong with ipads, there just isn’t anywhere to go with them developmentally. Software is where they need to get investing, more apps like Procreate but for all kinds of creativity, pro enough apps that will foster creativity in the public… and a native keyboard clipboard
I think my last iPad was the air 2 and I later got the samsung tab a8. I may eventually get the newer iPad when I can. I do prefer using apple tablets more than samsung.
For the price - I really need iPad to have near Mac OS like userbility (if that is a word). I really like my M1 iPad but refuse to upgrade at the prices they charge as I still need a second computer. If iPad could have a second real desktop os function then I wouldn’t need two machines. As such I will keep my M1 at least for 2 more years so I get a that value rather than drop £1k every 2-3 years.

The ipad series were my favorite tech to buy every year. But the last couple years its just a screen for kids. App store for ipad is just crap and limited af. A jailbroken ipad makes it so much appealing though.

Our neighbor country had accidentally leaked the price of the Pros on a retail website. The 11” will cost €1119 (M2 was €1069, so only €50 more expensive) and the 12.9” €1359 which is also a tiny bit more expensive than the M2. So in the US, the 11” will be between $849 and $899 and the 12.9” will be between $1099 and $1199. And both get OLED and the M4 chip. Yes. The M4 for enhanced AI performance that’s coming with iPadOS 18. The M4 will get a 32-core Neural Engine. Enjoy the Apple Event

What! This is the "same same, but different"! Adding a "flash" adding a "calculator" really? New colours are not "amazing" new colours are "nice" at best. As a former apple fanboy I got frustrated with Apple and their high tax on their products, the walled garden and staggeringly slow release of features that other brands/competitors had for quite some time and IOS and MaCOS were a mess in my mind. I switched to Samsung and they are leaps and bounds way ahead of apple. The apple fanboys go googoo lala over apple products because they feel it's some type of status symbol and you're part of the cool crew.... it's all so laughable....but Apple will keep doing what apple has always done and there will always be a ton of folk that lap up all the stuff they produce. Fortunately, that will not be me again.....

Speakers comparable to the MacBook Pro is only possible with a bigger (thicker) iPad. Physics is the issue because they want to shrink the Pro even thinner (to about 5 mm)

What makes a Pro is not on the iPad Pro: a telescopic camera. It’s an overpriced screen. The only useful iPad is the Mini. That being said, iPads will never be fully awesome, as that would cannibalize iPhone sales.
Actually if you gonna be pedantic about it, think more of who the pro it’s targeting. Us illustrators need tools too. That’s who the iPad Pro is specifically for, but it’s also a companion device. No pro spends $2000 on a device and calls it a day. If a $2000 tool is too much to justify for your work you probably don’t need it.

What I need from the iPads is the better video viewing experience for me. The one thing the mini iPad does well is the lesser amount of black bars when watching video content. I know when messing with some demo tablets, there are some major black bars when watching a KZhead video and idk why it bugs me.

It’s true for the cost part. It’s not true that it’s faster. I bought android tablet one time. It sucks so bad and so slow. I hated it. I returned it and bought an iPad. My current iPad is still running like a beast. It’s 2017 model. I can sell it and get some money back. Whereas android nobody wants to buy a tablet that’s 2017. Lol 😂

There was no iPad released last year. For some people it’s a work expense. Also most people don’t buy a new iPad every year. Many people upgrade every 3-5 years. Their upgrade cycles just land on different years, why they sell phones with slight upgrades every year. Their real business is services and commission on apps sold on app stores.
M3 can't run Mac App with keyboard, mouse and trackpad. Kinda stu** and pointless. A basic iPad 10.th gen can do the same, run the apps for a fraction of the price of iPad pro.

Apple's estimated iPad price increase because of new screen technology only stands to prove that Samsung has been working magic for almost a decade with their use of AMOLED displays on their high-end device. It's a feature worth highlighting on Apple's premium devices, but it's been standard practice on most of Samsung's Galaxy devices for almost a decade at prices comparable to Apple's prices.

Left apple in December 2023, when for a pixel fold, galaxy fold, S24 ultra April back on apple iPhone 15 pro max. Every OS has bugs but I haven’t had any on iOS 17.4.1. Every time I go to Android, I go back to iOS. The iPhone just works better no matter what any android user says. Also resell value, when I sold my iPhone 15 pro max in December, I had enough to get a pixel fold + watch, when I sold the not old at all S24 ultra the value was already below half the full price. But anyway each to their own.
I will never buy an iPad Pro ever again. I have one and it consumes battery power like a thirsty camel.
An iPad air with a magic keyboard should not cost as much as a MacBook Air
