Is it weird that the part of this that bothers me is that you have to declare an onside kick? I know that it is often obvious, but I love the occasional surprise onside kick
Greatest single play in Super Bowl History ⚜⚜⚜
Exactly
Yea but you lose less than 20 surprise onside kicks per year in exchange for over 1000 more potential returns. I'm all about it.
How would an onside kick even work? Just regular rules as they are now? I like the 4 & 15 idea as an onside kick
@@Ffancrzy I agree with what you're saying, but it should be noted that this is what the NFL has been pushing us to say. They want the kickoff to become a hated and boring play. Makes it easier to just remove or massively change it with little to no pushback
This rule change will make Pat’s solo surprise onside kick even more iconic, because no one will ever even have the opportunity to try it again
Same with Dan Connolly’s legendary runback for nearly a TD
How would do an onside kick with this new kickoff change?
@obeessido he explained in the video lol
@@obeessidohe did explain it, but here it is. In-side kicks can only happen in the fourth quarter, by the trailing team and they have to tell the refs they are doing it. It can not be a surprise,
TBF, there's lot of ways to preserve the spirit of an onside kick. Schiano's proposal for one 4th and 15 down still lets you surprise teams. That play was fantastic, no doubt about it. Until you realize that for every play like that, multiple players literally were injured out of their careers running all of the other BORING kickoffs just to get the 1 in a 100 cool play. It's just not worth the cost. Same reason we didn't let Burfict keep playing when if he played in the 80s, he would have been an NFL idol. We care more about the players now.
I'll also miss the surprise onside kick. One thing I don't understand: why limit onside kicks to 4th quarter and team from behind only? Seems like an unnecessary restriction to strategy
Idk the stats about how often Sean Payton called a surprise onside kick, but I remember another time when the Saints had a successful onside kick after halftime in the regular season against the Cowboys. Saints were winning and they wanted to keep the pressure on. I loved it.
Probably because it could really break the game, if they’re going to make it much easier to convert them, as they probably would. You end up in a situation where a kickoff could give them the ball on their 40, and an onside kick that you don’t recover gives them the ball on their 46, why not try it?
near halftime onsides will be missed
I mean I can't really see a reason for a team winning to do an onside kick without either looking like the most unsportsmen like team. Or a coach that has no faith in their Defense that has been doing enough to keep the team in the lead. The only people I can think that run on onside before the 4th are usually teams that have a coach playing for his job. Like I think we like the idea of the "surprise Onside kicks" but best case it wins you what? 2 games? Like name me a playoff appearing team that only made it because of one or two onsidekicks and I'll show you how minimal if impacts the history of the Modern NFL.
Yeah… it sounds like house rules we make when playing the football video games.😂😂😂 no onside unless you behind at the end.
I absolutely HATED the calling of Fair Catch OUTSIDE of the endzone automatically being a touchback. The ball is IN the field of play! You gotta run that.
I agree. At the most, make it a little 5 yard gain for a fair catch inside the 25. The current (2023) rule sucked the life out of the kickoff.
Or it's marked down there ,if you're not going to advance the ball let it bounce
@@lavoncoleman9285 exactly. If the balls in play like that, same as a punt.
If it's dangerous don't do it or do it and don't complain about it
For sure, or let it go and chance getting a bad bounce
NFL say they are all about the health and safety but yet want a 18 week game and just 1 bye lmao.....yep just coat that "safety" more
This comment should have 1 million likes
Aren't they doing 2 bye weeks of they go to 18 games? I think that was outlined in the agreement
Damn...they stretching one game out over 18 weeks? Monsters!
Poor fellas, they just don't make enough for tha😂
These guys get paid MILLIONS to play the same game kids DONT GET PAID FOR .. playing ONCE A WEEK for only 18 weeks is not a big deal .
This sounds like a nightmare to officiate.
Not really. There are lots of officials on the field. Everyone will have an assignment.
@@michelangelobuonarroti916 yeah and they've been doing a great job for the past few years, right?
totally agree, this sounds ridiculous for officials, especially considering the "front line" rules about the kickoff.
One official looking down one line, another official looking down another, another's eyes on the kicker, but then they all have to see when the deep official's hand comes down, so where they gonna be looking? Ask XFL officials.
Yeah and could you imagine getting kids to line up and do all this lol
The opening kickoff of the any game, the Super Bowl especially, is the money shot for every game. The flash of hundreds or thousands of cameras as the kicker comes up on the ball is one of the best images and moments and sports and it turns into a real dud of a moment when the ball sails out of the end zone or the receiving team fair catches. Excited to see if this brings more excitement back to special teams.
the could add this for regular season and then put the normal kick off for the playoffs
Imagine the best returner in history doesn't get that historic return to open the super bowl for the bears. And like you said...his return is the most iconic money shot in history.
I miss kick off returns! Move the kicking team to the 5 yard line 😑
How about fix the awful roughing the passer enforcement first
The enforcement isn’t the issue, it’s the rule itself. Officials have to enforce the rules as written, and the roughing the passer penalty as written is extremely strict.
That's not the content of this video.
How about watch a different sport crybaby.
@@texasvet2729it’s more about the inconsistency of calling it that gets me honestly
Amen. That rule is ruining the NFL.
I want a 70 yard field goal kick. That's the kick off.
the way the NFL has been moving, i could see that happening in 5-10 years since the NFL wants more high scoring games and more control of the outcome when it comes to Vegas odds
Like in Arena Football
Ngl I’ve always said if you kickoff and it goes through goalpost it gotta be atleast another point
Make kickoffs the Canadian football rule
@@GSB_KD I think it was 2k5 where you would kickoff through the goalpost and the announcer would say "Give that man 3 points!"
Dude, killin the onside kick is a dealbreaker. The best thing about it was that you didn’t know when they were going to do it and it was just up to how smart of a coach you were to anticipate it or not you know just kinda like how you call every single other play in football
I'll go off the board. In Canada we have what you would call a 5 yard halo on punt returns. And if the ball stays in the end zone on punts/kickoffs it's 1 point. So in the NFL I'd maybe suggest a 5 or 10 yard halo (smaller field ) if the ball is kicked inside the 20, reducing major hits. And you would still have the ability for an onside kick up to the 20 yard line. And if it hits the end zone, the return team gets a shot at a 2 point conversion. That way they have to try and keep the ball out of the end zone and in play.
The thing is the concussions mainly happen on the blocking and not on the tackle, so the halo rule wouldn't help.
I miss kick return specialists that people feared. Can't wait to see it back in the game
This sounds like the nfl wants more games to end 70-20 and a lot more super high scoring games
Right like give it to mahomes at the 35 or 40 just 5-7 times out of his 12 drives and that’s a guarantee 30 points then he’s still going to score 1-3 times of the other 6 drives so I could see atleast 5 offenses averaging 40 with this kickoff
I'm just glad they're finally entertaining other options. The kickoff is both the most boring play and the least safe play in the game and to score a TD on it the best strategy is to sign Cordarelle Patterson.
Casuals want to see TDs. Regular fans will just adapt like always. We will complain, but will still watch.
lol broncos.
@@tmoney6371yeah because Mahomes had such a great offense last year when Chris jones gave him the ball on the 40 5 times a game already.
At this point just kill the kickoff entirely and give the receiving team the ball, no kick. This is a horrible proposal. R.I.P Football 1872 - 2006
9:43 my immediate thought is: most people on the return team have their foot on the line and literally can’t move from that spot until their team touches the ball; if you hit a return team player with the kick, the spot of the ball is legitimate and recoverable by the kicking team
Love how they’ll change rules but nothing bout ref
Refs don't cause CTE. Just heartache and broken televisions 😂
Well the refs and bad calls are how you control the narrative and outcome
@@NeverStop909 be a ref then. This isn't based at you. But nobody wants to ref. The NFL need to hire and train full time refs. Period. You got Russ Wilson earning 85 million dollars over two years for a team he isn't playing for, but no full time adjudicators. Pathetic.
@@Les_Grossman80changing kickoffs isn’t gonna help with cte. Lol safety? NFL doesn’t care about safety. We have 1 bye week and still playing on mondays, Thursdays, sat. But yeah they care…
@@jcreature11 I never said it would. I was just talking to my mate saying you can protect the QB all you want and basically ruin the kick return, but O line is going to O line. When Pat admits a mistake from minutes ago under his breathe you know he's passionately talking about this stuff.
Dude SPECIAL TEAMS are some of the MOST EXCITING PLAYS...
kudos to Pat for explaining this so well and so in-depth! Well done!
As an official, this will be a pain to officiate.
i think the NFL is aware of this since it puts more blame on the refs when things go wrong and less blame on the NFL as a whole. its all a play to have more control of the outcome imo
It won’t be. It seems pretty simple.
I think that actually a feature, not a bug, in the NFLs eyes. The more convoluted they can make the rules with vague “judgement call” penalties, the easier it is to put their thumb on the scales. The NFL isn’t scripted, but it definitely feels like the NFL has a vested interest in the outcome of a lot of the major games in the way they get officiated and all. And, the vaguer you make the rules, the easier it is for the NFL to just stand behind the officials calls and say “it’s a judgement call”.
@@nathan1sixteendude what… your team must’ve gotten beat in the playoffs and you’re coping.
C'mon dude, it's completely obvious they don't even bother to hide it anymore@@mattelmquist4473
The kick off return for a TD record will never be broken.
You mean length, correct (the current record is 103 yards)? The number of kickoffs returned for TDs, I’d imagine, will increase substantially if this gets implemented.
they should get rid of touchback penalty and make them run it out of the endzone.
109 yards I'm pretty sure @@nathan1sixteen
@@nathan1sixteenpretty sure Patterson did a 109 yarder
Nope. Not with this rule. Really not with the current rules either. If they do implement this rule then there will certainly be a lot of kickoffs returned for touchdowns. But obviously they'll be 20-30 yards shorter than the old kick returns for touchdowns were.
That was nice the replay of you recovering your own onside kick. I never see that happen before. KOOL!
Pat brings so much info to the table. The kicking is the least studied by casual football fans to the point that kickers are not considered football players. The strategy in kicking reminds me of the MLB. It is so important in football. They can make or break a game, season, or SB.
I don’t mind moving the blockers up etc. I’d prefer just moving the kicker back, eliminating fair catches = touchbacks, and make the return guy field the ball. Kicks into the end zone should be live until the return guy fields it and downs it.
AJ was onto something with the kicker being a free runner lol.
This reminds me of that scene from "The Dark Knight" with Joker breaking a cue stick in two, one guy with the football surrounded by everybody, yeah, "Try outs" . . . 😂
What would be really cool is to have an NFL summer event where this concept was put through it's paces. Attendees: Special teams coaches and 2 kickers from each team. Appropriate Zebras. College players to make up the O and D lines and kick returners. Press to make it a television event I would for sure watch!
I can dig it. Miss me some great kickoff returns. Makes special teams and their choices more relevant as well.
They've ruined the onsides kick just like they ruined going for two.... no chance for trick plays and trick plays are fun.
You see more two attempts these days, and plenty of trick plays get run in those attempts. You’re just sad an archaic trick play is gone. If you care so much about preserving every SINGLE play just because it was always done that way, why aren’t you complaining about no one dropkicking anymore?
@@Fractured_Unity He's talking about fake field goals for a 2 point conversion. This new rule is crap
@@BGerbs66yeah because the old way wasnt stupid and silly and dangerous to begin with
@@BGerbs66 Oh no! One single play the fake pat got sacrificed for way more 2pt conversions. I’ll take that any day. I know what we’re about, do you?

Rules rules rules omg they make the game so damn complicated. Just bring back onside kicks please
I was waiting for the NFK to eliminate the kick off all together. With all of the touchbacks, there really isn't a reason to have a kickoff.
look how Devin Hester electrified the return leave it.
The kickoff rules have changed A TON since Hester was returning, though
All of his touchdowns came before the kickoffs changed. They absolutely gutted the kickoff at the end of his career. That's why he vanished from the NFL basically. Nobody was kicking to him since they could now kick it out of the endzone. Same thing with players like Patrick Peterson and DeSean Jackson. They were destructive in the return game on punts but useless on kickoffs. If Cordell Patterson played during the original kickoff rules he probably would absolutely dominate the return game.
Look at how the other 31 teams didnt have him, and how he's retired af anyway
You do understand that kickoff were contributing greatly to CTE and the league HAS to change the rules accordingly right? So many fans have this childish expectation that you can just ignore negative consequences. Are you 6 years old>?
@@Dynamice1337 lol no they weren't. you're embarrassing yourself, kid. snowflakes don't belong in football.
i actually kind of like this because it also gives the kicker position more responsibility and a need to hone their craft even more because of having to land it in the landing zone.
I would rather see the kickers hone their craft to carry out a strategy rather than just to stay within a complex set of rules that make little or no sense
It's alright I just dont like the 35 and 40 it should be 25 and 30. The no on-side kicks thing is also super lame. I guess if they're already going to be out to the 40 you'd be better off only onside kicking lol... Chance at the ball for basically a 10 yard penalty... Idk it's a step in the right direction but I feel they need to change a few things.
I love that Pat brought up the Polish Boot! Sebastian Janikowski!!
I already miss the wedge breaker. One of my favorite plays to watch was the guy running down the field and crashing into the wedge.
I'm up for this proposition. Way better than the snooze fest we had this season.
Snooze fest= phenomenal defensive adjustment to new offensive schemes… ok loser
This seems... convoluted.
To be fair, a lot about the game is convoluted, we're just used to it lol.
It's not, at all. You kick it into the zone. Nobody moves for a bit
Not convoluted at all. Just pay attention.
It's not. He just took a long way of explaining it.. The kicker kicks it gets in the landing zone. The rest of the teams are on the 35, and 40 5 yards apart. can't move until ball is touched. No running head start. That's all it is. Higher return rates instead of just kicking it out. The kicker just have to have skill now
@@derekmoll1498exactly is a real easy concept. Pat just made it sound complex😂
Instead of saying that man is the creature of circumstance, it would be nearer the mark to say that man is the architect of circumstance.
Kickoff used to be EXCITING
I have no idea what you guys have been talking about for the past 10 minutes. This is the most convoluted answer to a problem that seems very straightforward.
The convolusion is intentional by the NFL. The more complicated, the harder it will be for your average fan to follow, the easier it is to put their finger on the scales of the outcome. Also, it’s a good way for the NFL to have the excuse in a few years to go “we tried to make it safer, but you didn’t like it (or we couldn’t), so our only option is to get rid of the kickoff altogether”. And next it will be some other “unsafe play” until they just out flags on them
@@nathan1sixteen hows your tinfoil hat fitting? Sorry you and the poor OP consider any of this convoluted.
Not bad but how about this for a simple solution?: Go back to the original scheme in the first 75 years of football on kickoff BUT - allowing the receiving team to ADD one additional player for protection / blocking/ --- less concussions ? Maybe. Exciting? Probably. More run backs ? Absolutly. Longer run backs and possible touchdowns? YES
It's honestly not even that difficult. I found the explanation pretty easy to follow.
@@CrochetNewsNetworkSo you want to go back to the old days yet fundamentally change the whole game of football by allowing one team to have more players on the field at once
Pat and crew, thanks. You gave the first clear explanation of the new kick off. I have listened to others and only understand it now. Well done, good graphics. Thanks.
I once heard an interesting thought on the kickoff that might be worth looking into at this point. Instead of a kickoff, the "kicking team" starts with the ball 4th & 15 from the 40. They can then go for the 4th down, much like an onside kick, or they can punt it away. With the power of today's punters, the outcome would be close to the same as a traditional kickoff, but still provides for the thrill and advantages of the onside kick.
Just move the kicker back and get rid of the fair catch. No need to completely change it.
Let’s see it in action before passing judgement
I like it I just dont like the 35 and 40 that feels like a bit much. Also the no on-side kicks unless you're trailing in the 4th is kind of lame
Seems like it makes the kicker position harder and more important. Love the brand.
One of the better solutions I’ve seen tbh kinda shocked honestly
You did a great job explaining this! I've only been watching football 3 years and I totally understood your explanation. ❤ you're starting to rub off on me lol
This sounds rather interesting… would love to see it put in trial runs prior to being implemented. I enjoyed watching the XFL’s kickoffs.
It has been... this is very similar to the XFL, consider that the trial
XFL was the best for kickoff excitement
I like this a lot, makes kickers way more valuable
As if they aren’t already incredibly valuable. Harrison butker has been the most consistent kicker in the league recently, he kind of carried the chiefs last year.
Agree. Like in basketball, and the possession arrow you get the ball at the 30 after every score. You don’t need more injuries on kick offs.
Kickoffs are one of my personal favorite plays, when they're returned. If the goal is to not make kickoffs pointless, and prevent injuries, then this is a good idea. Almost 80% of kickoffs were touchbacks last year. 17% of all concussion injuries were from the kickoff. Yet kickoffs were only 6% of all plays. That's a lot. Yeah, this is going to look different but I guarantee after next season we're going to be happy about this decision. I want kickoff returns actually back.
I’m at least willing to see what happens. It’s a step in the right direction if only because we will know what does and doesn’t work
I saw concussions not from kickoffs
@@US2A Yes so they're trying to reduce them from the play that it happens the most on.

Preach! You don’t see combat athletes complaining about it. They just get out when they feel they need to
The kickoff has evolved naturally over time into complete trash. It is wasted time and an excuse for more commercial breaks. The rules need to be adapted to keep that aspect of the game more interesting. This proposed change is a huge positive
I like the idea and proposal. At the end of the day, it's yet another layer of strategy and entertainment. I've also always had a thought that instead of a coin toss pre-game, maybe we'd involve some sort of kick, or something similar, to involve the kicker even more. You know, something of that sort maybe.
If the kickoff goes through the uprights give the kicking team a point or 2
I've been thinking that for years. With this rule package, they could say you can only go for that in the 4th quarter if trailing. If made, the receiving team gets the ball at the 20. If missed, they get the ball at the 40. If they made it worth 2 points for a make, then make it the 50 for a miss.
@@keithouderkirk7493so they are already in field goal range just cause of that lol. It’s becoming pathetic advancing teams to almost the 50 without even doing anything.
No. Free throws are for the NBA. You can't have this for the NFL because there is nothing the opposing team can do to defend.
No points, but start the offense on the 10 or 15.
I've always thought that. Reward for an incredible feat.
This entire thing seems set up to benefit the returning team and screw over the kicking team.
yup its bs. no more muffs recovered by D. no more onside kicks recovered by the D lol stupid.

@@kingkracker1998 kickoff isn't exciting right now. Hasn't been exciting in years. No idea how you think this makes kickoffs less exciting
Seems like a lot to officiate against, but I like this way better than what we have now. Since no one can go forward until the ball hits the ground or is touched hang time means nothing and I would say the best is to get a good kicker that can line drive the kick and land in the zone. That means teams can move before the returner handles the ball or it goes into end zone for touchback at the 20.
I like the new rules, but I would give a team the option. Of using the new kickoff or the old kickoff but you kick it from your own 5. So if you want to get a running start, overload the formation, all that you can.... But you're either going for an onside or trying some trickiness of some kind.
Players in the Super Bowl didn't know the overtime rules, we think those same guys will understand all of these intricacies?
Good, then the smart teams with well coached players will have an advantage.
They had no problem figuring it out in the XFL

@@freddiesimmons1394 again...read my first sentence. These rules aren't too "intricate" for me. It's for the players who already don't know the rules and now have to learn playground rules
This isn’t nearly as complicated as people think. It just sounds complicated. Most of us have no clue what proper formations are but the players do…usually.
I'm declaring as eligible.
Or we can just have normal kickoffs and realize football is inherently dangerous
@@gratefuldeadmau5610 Everything has the potential for danger. Should we remove seatbelts and airbags from cars because driving is inherently dangerous? And maybe we should let football players use weapons and take cheap shots after the play because the sport is already dangerous. The point is to balance gameplay with safety, not just allow players to be needlessly hurt because they already have the potential to be hurt.
@@gratefuldeadmau5610 It's exceptionally rare that a team even scores on a kickoff. The vast majority of kickoffs end with the ball either getting kicked through the end zone, a touchback, or fair catched. Very rarely does a returner even want to try to run after the catch. The entire kickoff as it's been is just incredibly antiquated and stale. That the risk of serious injury is so high, just so a team can maybe get the ball to what is usually the 40 at best only makes the kickoff that much more stupid. I mean, I get your sentiment - I'm not a fan of how wussified the NFL has generally become as most of their safety rules changes have basically crippled what modern defenses can do - but, in this particular case, I think the proposed changes would actually make the game fundamentally better.
This seems like a ton more work than the proposal from a few years ago to just turn the kick off into a punt play with some kind of analysis to figure out how long the "4th and X" option would need to be to make it equivalent to an onside kick.
besides the no more surprise onside kick, this actually sounds like a great concept (might need some tweaks, but seems like a great way to add strategy)
The only thing I'd change is allow the Onside Kick to be a surprise, and available in the second half rather than just the 4th quarter. Even if it's "a dying art," the sheer potential for that upset is entertaining enough. Otherwise I think this is a very fair compromise on all fronts.
There’s no way to have a surprise onside if the layout of the players is the way it is
They would have to change they way they line up and announce it as a on side kick. The way he described, there will no longer be able to have a surprise on side kick. If you take away the surprise, it won’t be as exciting, imo.
Since the kicking team can't leave the setup area until the ball touches the ground or reaches the 20, will this basically end fair catches?
Which I would say is the desired effect.
Yes, fair catches killed kickoffs
If you can get short distance and hang time, it will be very similar to a rugby kick-off. Is there such a thing as aerial contests for the ball on a regular kickoff?
Only in Canadian rules. American rules introduced "opportunity to make a fair catch" about a century ago.
I’m for recoveries I’d love to see examples of this before the season starts.
Here's my proposition. Instead of kickoffs, have a WWE ring in the middle of the field. Two players in their respected positions will rumble it out. Whoever comes out on top, takes the ball.
Score. Offense gets the ball back on the 40 but it's 4th & 15. You can go for it, or punt. Simpler. More fun. Better option for an onside kick type situation by going for it on 4th & 15. Less risk for injury than a typical kickoff. I don't know why this is so hard.
Probably would never kick it vs a team with an explosive return game but a meddling defense..
I'm not sure that my comments might be being deleted, but you did a great job explaining this! I've only been watching football 3 years and I totally understood your explanation. Thank you so much!
Took much too long to explain it, instead of just laying it all out at once without back-and-forth. First the motivations, then the *entire* proposal, then opinions. Like real committee work.

I know its a crazy thought but if they dont want injuries put the the ball of the 50 and let them try to make it through the uprights. If they make it they get 1 pt either way the other team gets it as a touchback. I dont know if this would add or take away from the game but I like the idea.
All three of my concussions in football happened on kickoff or kick return
They could just make it so it you call a fair catch you have to start the drive from there or if you fumble or trip and fall your down there but I would move the receiving teams devfenders back 5-10 yards as well
Hi, how are you? Pat I love your breakdown of the new kick off. Can we also change the muffed punt rule. I think if you drop the punt it's a live ball come on right.
I hate this breakdown. Way too slow and disorganized. They should pretend they're a committee and the emcee is introducing the proposal as a motion, including the history of previous reforms in the NFL and elsewhere, and the motivations for the proposal. And the proposal itself should include *all* the details but just the facts, as closely as are known at this time. Then and only then proceed to discussion of the motion. If the proposal was explained thoroughly there should be no need for clarifying questions. Don't bother with a vote, though.
they can use the first down markers on the side of the field to mark the 20 so people know too
To add one more element, there should be a way to make points out of it for the kicking team. If the kicker puts the ball through the uprights, that should be 2 points, and the ball starts at the 20 for the receiving team. If it's missed, ball on the 40or 45 for the receiving team.
I like your explanation. I read about this play and was against it; however, after listening to this segment, I can see the added utility. Yet, I do agree that announcing an onside kick will hurt its chances of success. There may still have to be an adjustment to the onside process.
The gap between the kicking teams and the first touch location is huge. A fast returner is going to cover a lot of ground, right?
Nixon for the Packers will ride fourth
I love it. Places more importance on special teams and kickers, and also enhances the game by adding skill based and strategy based plays and parts to the game, adding more tactics as well
They're talking about end of game whether or not you go for the 0-20 landing rolls into the end zone or take the set 35. I think the caliber of kicker is just going to get better. Kickers that can't reliably land it in the 0-15 or even 0-10 area are going to have a lot less value than those that can. Its like how the QB has adapted overtime.
He who has health has hope, and he who has hope has everything.
Some people think it's holding that makes one strong sometimes it's letting go.
I like the general form of the line up. I don’t like the landing zone idea. Back the kicker up a bit perhaps. Ball must go to the other 30. If the ball touches the ground and rolls into the end zone out the player can return or kneel it to the 20 or 25. If the ball lands in the end zone or out of bounds, ball goes to the 40. Ball rolls out the back of the end zone touchback. Ball goes out the sidelines of the end zone take it to the 40.
kick off from the 1 yard line... no return team. LOL!!
I love 90% of this idea! I think that the kicker should be able to join the coverage immediately. I feel like most coaches would not really utilize the starting place kicker anyway. I also hate that an onside kick has to be done only in the 4th quarter. Though, when it comes to keeping the ball, I also like the idea of replacing the inside kick. Instead, having a 1 play opportunity starting on their own 25 yards line where the 1st down mark would be at the 50. This is generally a good change though. I love returns
I'm worried that this could be a surprising disadvantage for the return team just because the blockers won't have eyes on when the ball is touched or hits the ground making them more reactive than proactive.
This is a really interesting change to the game. The onside kick restriction is weird, but I guess we'll see how that goes. I like the idea of the landing zone but I feel like they should have moved the kicker back a bit to compensate? Idk. I'm not a expert lol
Not a huge football fan but typically watch the big games. This past superbowl the kickers had such a big boot that they were kicking it past the endzone almost everytime for a touchback. This new kickoff actually sounds really interesting and adds some more technicality to the play.
Here's a crazy but simple idea that I think would work, add to player safety, and add a completely new element to the game. Allow one forward pass for the receiving team on every kickoff or punt return up to 10 yards from the point of the reception. The kicking team would have to focus more on the actions of the other 10 players, not just getting past them to destroy 1 player at full speed.
The kick cover team has to be positive which direction the ball is going. Plus use the lateral pass
I’m having some trouble with this what’s happening, in rugby league kickoff our injury rate is very low. So what’s going on?
