this is where unions suck....keeping him on the MLB roster. Put him in the minors or peewee league. Keep it up Angel and you would be the reason why computers would be used....Angel doesn't want accountability and is ruining the game. Why banana baseball is getting more popular!!!
Umpires are human and can make mistakes in their game calls. But that guy needs to retire. He’s missed more obvious calls than I’ve ever seen! Having that effect on the outcome of the game is bad. Being able to discern the difference between a ball and a strike is the job. Not picking fights with the players and managers. The umpire should only be there to keep the game moving. Hernandez fails at that. It ends up being a cluster****.
Im ok with umpires missing some calls. Its part of the game.
Maybe I’m missing something from the rule, but foul tip and swinging are not mutually exclusive. From what I can tell, he didn’t change his call, he elaborated that he swung into the foul tip. That maybe could have been appealed to the 1B ump. This isn’t a defense of Angel BTW.
My understanding, and I am by no means an expert, just a fan, is that the distinction comes on the hit-by-pitch part. If you swing and are hit-by-pitch, you are not awarded first base and the call of swing is not reviewable. You make an excellent point though that he doesn't necessarily change the foul tip call as much as add the caveat that he swung at the pitch, so whether its foul or HBP, there is no base to be awarded.
The guy sued mlb but what's missed is the case was actually heard in court. As when your not picked for umpire in playoffs there is reason. As seen here, and in Yankees game where ball drops and he signals out.
How is it that everyone knows he's the worst, and yet, he still has a job?

Fun fact, Angel actually isn't the "worst" as far as metrics go. Yes, there are actually worse umps in baseball.
I saw that too. For a moment, I wondered if my opinion of him was being biased by isolated anecdotal incidences of buffoonery. Then I remembered they aren't isolated.

MLB does not care. There is an epidemic of bad calls and bad umpires and refereeing. MLB just looks the other way.

@@JerkRoutes Exactly. He's probably been told that his overturn-on-review rate is too high, or that if he continues to be the most overturned umpire by a factor of three, his job will be under review as well. By making his call non-reviewable, he dodges one bullet.
