Trials bike wheelie progression - Day 6 Finally getting it !!!

2023 ж. 2 Мам.

Day 6 of the wheelie progression and all of a sudden it started to come together. I was actually managing to keep my balance and stay in a straight line and that allowed me to keep the front wheel up longer. Also used a little more speed to help stability.
If I can do it, then anyone can !!!

  • In 1973 I was 16 and got a 250 Bultaco Sherpa-T. I did ride several hours per day. Eventually I could wheelie in 4th gear for as long as the field allowed. Up grade was easier but eventually I could go down grade as well. I never looped my bike either. It was a great bike and also very reliable. Very impressive for a bike that today would be 50 tears old. One tip, when riding a rocky stream, go with the flow. Ride where the water is flowing.

    • Hi, hopefully I’ll keep improving but I think starting at 46 is probably a slight disadvantage 😂 Thanks for the advice I’ll try it next time I head out. 👍

  • Great . I’m about the same in my wheelies , this is encouraging , they take so much work . I still tend to panic when the front wheel comes right up and I stab the back break slamming the wheel, back down . I need to chill as I get to balance point .

    • It’ll come, after day 6 my improvement has slowed massively but I’m definitely more in control than I was, still trying to work out how to stop falling sideways, lots of hours I guess. Keep at it 👍

  • I'm still working on balance and throttle/clutch control. I get a little freaked out when the front wheel comes up but hopefully that's something I will get used to

    • Just keep practicing and it’ll be fine. Takes a while to get up to balance point and be confident enough not to either pull the clutch straight in or hit the back brake! I found trying to keep a gentle throttle going and without letting off use the rear brake to control it, that way it doesn’t come straight back down. Also it’s virtually impossible to wheelie slowly, I ended up going to 3rd to avoid tipping sideways but it’s scary doing it that fast to start with so build confidence with clutch etc then increase speed. I also found I’d have days when I didn’t feel I’d improved at all and sometimes felt it was getting worse but just keep going as all of a sudden things start to click! Good luck 🙂

  • Nicely done! At this point you'd probably learn to catch the bike from flipping back with the rear brake. It is not that difficult to learn but it is the essentials for more advanced technicks

    • Thanks. I do use the rear brake but I haven’t got enough control of it yet, only manage to hit it hard and bring the front back down. Hopefully I’ll get it better soon.

    • Once you get over that balance point an on that brake, you will wonder what all the fuss was about. It’s just scary getting there. Having said that, you are doing great. You will get there very soon. Just try to keep it controlled and not use the power of the engine to keep that wheel up.

    • Thanks, I really struggle to keep going in a straight line so have to put the front wheel back down sooner than I need to. Any tips ?

    • @@crashbangbikers I used a 20” trials bicycle and learned to manual first. (Wheelie without peddling or braking). There is a lot less fear from doing it on a small bike. A trials bicycle can really help with your trials skills in general.

    • I think I’ve got a long way to go before that happens but maybe one day. I’m going to try on the ktm 200 exc next and see how that goes 🤞

  • Yea man ! Had the same bike and a fantic and gas gas , montesa lock the bars to the right on stand up wheelies or dip the clutch in 4th the road gears on them are ace for wheelies. Wish I kept that Montesa (Honda) lovely frame
