Through The Storm: Inside The COVID Wards

2021 ж. 25 Нау.

Sky News spends a month inside two London hospitals - Barnet Hospital and The Royal Free - during the peak of the COVID-19 winter wave, as the NHS faces the worst ever crisis in its history.
We follow the stories of patients and staff and ask if the NHS will ever be able to fully recover.
This documentary contains stories from inside the hospitals, including patients on ventilators and those separated from their families, which some viewers may find upsetting.

  • The comments here are shameful. I've worked at the Royal Free and I know several of the people interviewed in this documentary. They are 100% genuine clinicians and are telling the truth about the impact of COVID on the hospital. The pandemic has taken an enormous toll on them and they deserve respect, not the conspiratorial nonsense spouted in this comment section by people who have not the first clue about what has happened in hospitals over the past year.

    • That's the first sensible comment I've read. I'm horrified at what I'm reading. These trolls are shameful and disrespectful and clearly haven't yet lost a loved one to the virus. Wait till they lose one of their parents or close family, watching them suffer and deteriorate while hospital staff race to help them to the point where they're crying from exhaustion and the stress of watching people suffering. I hope these people can live with themselves knowing they spent the pandemic years sat on their lazy, denying backsides while hospital staff worked 60+ hours a week to save peoples lives. How must those staff at the Royal Free feel after watching the documentary and reading these vile comments? Some people are utterly disgusting human beings.

  • I was in ICU at the age of 37 and had horrific PTSD which took a year to get over. I couldn’t believe how helpless I was when I came round. I couldn’t walk, use my arms very well and I couldn’t perform basic cognitive tasks. I kept locking myself out of my phone as the numbers didn’t make sense. Now I’m fully recovered and back to work. I owe my life to the NHS and all the wonderful hospital staff 💙

    • I believe they are - no training here but personal experience. PTSD has roots in stress hormones, particularly in cortisol. My own case was from a pair of short-duration events of extreme violence, but it was fed by the resulting hypervigilance... for 25 years I was ready for a terrorist attack or an airliner crash at any time without shifting gears. Their ongoing severe stress is very bad news indeed, and PTSD can devastate lives.

He been in three weeks before I got in the room he was 72 years old. I did my best to get him to think positive and keep himself in a good mood. I hope he made it out and back to his wife.

We are over 80% double vaxed and over 90% at least single vaxed where I am, we aren’t in lockdown anymore and our numbers are still very low. Would rather have had to have lockdowns than be dead.

  • In December 2020 I was a paramedic responding to about five COVID-19 related calls a shift. Of those, about 80% were severe/critical patients. Now in December 2021 I've only had about 25% of the amount of COVID-19 calls compared to the prior year almost all of them have been mild symptoms. The ones that were severe were all unvaccinated. Just from my point of view, the vaccine is helping.

This time last year I was desperate to see him before he passed, and when he did pass, I wanted to spend time with him, in the chapel of rest, but because he passed of covid, I wasn't allowed. A year on from when he was first infected and rushed to hospital, and next month is the first anniversary of his passing, I'm so glad I didn't see him and I have beautiful memories of him and not memories of him gasping for every breath he took, seeing him in a coma and on a ventilator, and subsequently passed away in his coffin.

  • I was in hospital last year. My GP called an ambulance due to an emergency. I was taken to hospital in an ambulance with paramedics presenting with a non-covid related illness. My mom is my main carer, I am wheelchair bound and suffer from the following diagnosis. Auto immune kidney disease, epilepsy, angina, atrial fibrillation, super ventricular tachycardia, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, chronic bronchitis, osteoporosis, and DDD. once I was assessed in the accident and emergency department I was moved to a ward called MAU. My mom was told in the accident and emergency department that she would have to leave. Even though she's my carer. When I was on the ward, I noticed how isolated I was from my family. It was impossible to get a signal on my phone. I asked for a jug of water multiple times. It took nearly 9 hours for me to get a drink. I was not offered any food, I'm on diabetic medication. The nursing staff just left me in the bed, they didn't seem to have a clue what to do. And I felt forgotten. I was only in for one night and felt worse for it. It was a very unpleasant experience, it didn't feel right not being able to see my family, especially my mom. I'm glad I didn't stay in long. due to the lack of food and fluids I would have definitely deteriorated. I can see why patients are dying quicker in hospital. I'm also suspicious that patients catch covid in hospital. Anyway I'm glad I'm home.

  • We must take care of our hospital staff! They are on the frontline of this crisis and can only do so much for so long. The physical and mental toll is overwhelming, and yet we see staff being taken for granted with low pay, crushing schedules who are working quite literally till they drop. My daughter graduates nursing school in May and I shudder to think of her walking into the sheer chaos of this pandemic. Why is it that we are still reacting to Covid as if it were day one of the pandemic? Governments need to double down and come up with a plan that advocates for our hospital staff.
