Having lived in tornado alley my entire life, the amount of times you spend huddled up in your bathroom/the hall closet/the most interior space of whatever building you happen to be in and NOTHING HAPPENS is ridiculous. Not to mention, they were under a Tornado Watch (conditions are right for a tornado), not a Tornado Warning (a tornado has been confirmed). The least realistic thing about this clip is the time of day the storm occurs. I wish the supercells would hit my house in the middle of the afternoon and not from 10PM to 3AM.

CBS got in big trouble with the FCC for using EAS tones outside of an actual alert. Also, Young Sheldon takes place in the late 80s-early 90s. The EAS' appearance here is anachronistic, as it was implemented in 1997. Its predecessor, the Emergency Broadcast System, would have been more accurate to the era.
Didn't know that. Guess we learn something new every day.
I do believe they have gotten the siren wrong as well. I know that the sirens around the East Texas area in the late 80s-early 90s weren't ever able to produce that sort of frequency. But oh well, stock sounds ;D

I love this show. It really hits home ( no pun intended) living in tornado alley my whole life. In Texas and Alabama / Georgia border. I’m so thankful for my basement. I take Tornado watches seriously. My sons college apartment was wiped out by one but thankfully he listened to me and spent that night with us.

True, but not true. The National Weather Service issues Warnings in multiple counties at a time if the storm is big enough, so it is possible to get a Tornado Warning (TOR) when it is sunny out. There was a storm that was just barely gonna hit my area one time, and It went tornado warned. We were barely in the TOR because the storm was farther away from us, and it was sunny when NOAA Weather Radio went off. But yes, you are very right lmao.

To protect the integrity of the system and prevent false activations, the FCC prohibits the use of actual or simulated EAS tones to be broadcast if they are not real alerts, tests, or public service announcements. Huge technical error in that alert. This is supposedly set in the 80s. The EAS did not exist then. Should have been a simple attention signal. CBS may have been fine had it done that and used a simple single tone (say 1100 hz)

That, and the looney tunes audio is still playing when the EAS noise is going off. That usually just plays on its own, and the show audio turns off.
Also the robot voice announcing the warning sounds like a slowed down version of the NOAA Weather Radio Tom voice, which was introduced in 2004. That being said, robot voices likely weren't used to announce weather warnings in the 80s. Either the warnings were accompanied by the EBS tone, the TV station's proprietary attention tones, or an actual human would be announcing the warning. They did have an alert system back then, but it was a completely different tone without the following voice. I am just commenting in the thread, I know it's 2 years ago but maybe someone will read it. The current one was made sometime in the 90s. CBS would've been fine using the old one and it would've kept it in historical context without getting fined. I don't know if anyone growing up my and Sheldon's age that wouldn't recognize the old one. The only thing about the newer one that makes it more tolerable is the tone isn't as high.
Fun fact: the series used an altered version of the Emergency Alert System tone which had been banned in the US from being used outside of legitimate emergencies. As a result, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) wanted to slap a fine of $272,000 on the show for not adapting the sound enough to be not considered the actual alert thus 'breaking broadcasting rules'. The episode included a sound effect accompanying a tornado warning, which the producers modified, but still audibly resembled actual EAS tones.CBS is yet to respond to the FCC regarding the allegation. Young Sheldon is just one of a number of shows that have been cracked down over use of the emergency alert use, which should only be used by Trump to warn US citizens of impending disasters. These include impending missile attacks, terrorism acts and natural disasters. Jimmy Kimmel received the worst of these fines, owing $395,000 for mocking the tone on the same day it was tested around the US.

My question is, why wouldn't the show use the old EAS (then EBS) warning tone? This show takes place in the late 80's to around 1990. So why not use the old, out of date tones from back then? True story. There was once a tornado a couple miles from my house and my sister, like the girl in this show, needed to pee. We were taking shelter in the bathroom. It was not a fun time.
At least she wasn't suffering from chronic diarrhoea at the time. My former roommate experienced this during a. Twister that took the roof off half of the house he was in. He likes to joke that it was literally the shitiest day of his life. 🤣

Yeah she’s a good character. She gets a lot of hate online because young liberal people see her as the least relatable but the show does a brilliant job of making every character 3 dimensional. They’re all likable but all have so many flaws. It’s so human.

One I remember off the top of my head is letting missy choose a restaurant to eat instead of sheldon and telling sheldon verbatim “this house isn’t all about you.” I don’t deny she favors sheldon more but again that’s what makes her believable. She’s a realistic character since many parents tend to have a soft favorite though they’d never consciously admit as much
