As a former rock climber in my younger years who used to climb anything, structures etc for fun and to test my skills, the biggest (most likely) hazard with climbing up the fender that way is that it appeared the tender boat was directly under her. So if she lost her grip or had a slip, instead of falling into the relatively forgiving water, she could have hit the boat with her head, spine etc. And THEN if she fell into the water with a head or spine injury…. very bad news.
Yeah, if her foot had slipped, or she lost her balance, or the line parted, or the knot let go (etc), she would have definitely fallen back onto the tender with guaranteed injuries at a minimum. And it may have resulted in a possible drowning. Many people have died from far simpler stunts. To say, "Oh it wasn't that dangerous," is highly irresponsible.

People are always making excuses for unsafe practices except when an accident happens and then they are the first to condemn it!

Agreed; There is no excuse, the difference between life and death here is only a patch of oil, water, paint or something similar on the fender or her shoe. This comes from someone who spent his whole working life getting on and off vessels. I question if the young person was under pressure to climb up the side to “save time” and avoid others having to go to the effort of deploying a pilot ladder. My point is, it is not only the person climbing up the fender that is at fault the other two people in the clip have to take their share of the blame, nobody should stand-by and watch o young crew member do something like this. When I was at sea I was always taught to look after the other members of the crew as they would look after you.
Safety on the water should never be ignored and in any situation whether it is safe to do so or not at that time. Complacency is one the main causes of incidents, if one gets use to bending the safety rules for certain things like getting on this yacht when docked as shown, one will still do it in a situation when it is actually dangerous.
The damn penguin climed up the fender to board.
It's amazing that a superyacht would have no safe means of ingress forcing a crew member to use a fender to access the yacht. There is no excuse for ignoring safety whether on a yacht or working construction. Thank you for highlighting this unsafe practice. I am not a superyacht crew. But I had over 9,000 NM of sailing last year including 1100 NM and 4800 NM offshore passages.
Many decades ago, I was Electrical Officer on board a British Merchant Navy ship, moving outwards on the Manchester Ship Canal. We had ceased movement for the night as we sat in the transfer lock. We had with us a contract donkeyman, who had looked after the boiler when in Salford docks, who had stayed on board, as he would have been able to get home quicker by getting off during the lock transfer. He’d unfortunately taken strong drink during the evening, and bullied his way to the gangway, despite protestation from the Second Mate. He attempted to slide down a rope on to a fender, but slipped, and there really wasn’t a great deal of room between the fender and the quayside of the lock.

The obvious danger of climbing a fender doesn’t need to be disputed…it’s a round slippery rubber object!
That isn't designed to be used as a ladder.
although I don't work on SY as soon as I saw the young lady climbing that fender I said "wrong". there is a reason for 'safety first'. One of my many nickname's, and one I where as a badge of honor is "safety monster " if you work in a dangerous environment or even not, you to should be a safety monster. If me being a jerk about safety keeps someone for injury or death fine. If nothing else, it saves me from some paperwork, but most importantly, my conscious is clear, I did all I could.
Some are saying that the woman wasn’t really at risk and it’s not a big deal. It’s not the risk, it’s the consequence. As you pointed out, if she’d fallen, she could easily hit her head and enter the water unconscious. I doubt that she could cause the fender to deflate but I doubt the line is designed to hold her weight. If it holds her, would it hold someone who is 6’2” and 250 lbs?
Fenders and the lines that hold them can endure tremendous forces. A few extra hundred pounds will have no effect whatsoever. Not a safe practice for all of the very real reasons covered in the video.
The fender and securing line would hold up to a person with no problem. They do after all take the crushing weight of the vessel against a dock. But they are designed to move. She could have fallen off hit her head or back on the boat under her and created a rescue situation from what should have been a boarding. I'd hold the person driving the boat responsible as well. There's no reason for putting someone in danger like that.
@@beepseatsfindingfoodtreasu8756 And when several boats are tied “stern to”, meaning the sterns are tied to the dock and the bows are secured to mooring blocks on the floor of the harbor, all of the boats are side by side, constantly moving and rubbing up against each other with tremendous force. At the very end of the video, the other occupant of the tender climbed up on top of the canopy. I’ll bet he was going to step onboard the sailboat as well. Cutting corners.

I recall the account of a world cruiser being told he had to declare his pet parrot. The port authority was informed it wasn’t a pet, but a stowaway who pooped on the deck, but it was an endangered species, so it couldn’t be killed It had traveled across the Pacific Ocean on the boat. 😉

Staff frequently look for 'shortcuts' but safe systems of work are in place for a reason. The marine environment is dangerous enough without unsafe working practices, thank you for highlighting this, some might say it is really minor and nothing to stress about, right up until the accident which, as you point out could have devastating consequences for the person involved, their family, friends, crewmates etc.

Fair to her, she took the risk not exposing anyone else to the risk.
Those attempting to rescue her would be at risk working between the 2 vessels so not a good excuse. Add in wake from attending boats and doubly risky of crushing events.

The first piece and the very last were fine as usual on this excellent channel. I was not aware it was a crew safety advice channel. As mentioned fender climbing is a very rare event in or out of marinas. Nuff said . Presumably that whole piece came from that well known journo Phil Space as there was not much real news on the go. The vast majority of people in the industry know that the sea and boats can be dangerous places . Make a mistake and you will soon know about it without daddy looking over your shoulder. Your life, your responsibility - get on with it.

we just have had THREE deaths on Lake Windermere in BC largely due to the shock of people getting into the water and it was summer: body heat in the sun and then jumping/falling/running into the water,in one case as a younger person was in trouble. Focus was on the younger person and the rescuing teen slipped below. Water accidents happen so fast and no, alcohol was NOT a factor in any of the deaths.

About the lady climbing on the ship via a fender. What about her colleague who at the end started to climb onto the roof of the tender was that his route onto yhe ship?
The fact that some folks think its ok for that girl to climb onto the yacht via the fender are complete clowns and lack logic. The biggest issue besides falling back onto the tender, the other danger is her falling between the yacht and tender and getting crushed between the tender and yacht. So many ppl have been injured this way between a boat and dock and this is no different

Eh, if safety was always first no water vessel would leave the safety of the pier even for a harbour cruise.
Yeah, calculated risk is nil, but if something does go awry, you could die as many previous incidents imply. Best to not use the fenders for anything other than their intended use.👍😎✌🗽
If that fender was going to explode or deflate, then you should never use that fender for any reason.
In Denmark if a person breaks the traffic law in certain ways, the car will be confiscated regardless who's is the owner of the car. So even a leasing car can be confiscated. So please drive carefull if you visit Denmark.

Really like your channel.. I have a question, I thought there was an old time rule that it was very unlucky to change the name of a boat? I have heard of many cases where a name boat changed and the vessel ends up having bad luck. I first heard this many years ago when I go a job with a man who owned an electrical company, He bought a 36 foot boat and I an another summer worker were assigned to clean up and do minor repairs. The boat was taken to Miami and my boss met it there. He hired a Captain and his wife to crew and take him and his wife to the Bahamas. On their way back to Miami the boat and all 4 were lost in the triangle. I believe the name was changed to "High Voltage".
Safety is usually a pain in the butt and safety guards slow you down. Problems may only occur once in 10,000 times! However, one of our employees tried to pull a jammed paper out of a track because it was faster. She likely did it right 9,999 times but on the 10,000 th. time she lost all the skin on her hand. ( The accident cost about $1 million to the company and the loss to the employee was priceless.) Be Safe.
shouldn't there be an alternative way to access a vessel for crew? I assume the fender was chosen due to the gangway area being crowded with guests/visitors/VIPs, so all yachts should provide some other means of access and stop the crew finding their own, dangerous alternatives.

The real risk is dropping between the 2 vessels and getting crushed. Hit head on the way down and you are suddenly unconcious in the water.

That straw ownership thing really doesn't work in all situations... my girlfriend asked me whether I have something with this other girl and I claimed "No she's the fiance of XYC" but still she didn't believe me and now I am facing trial at the kitchen table....
Sadly this type of event is not unusual, not thinking about safety is a common occurrence, i won't list all of them but 25 years in the superyacht business and this kind of slipshod approach to safety is very common. It's often to do with the on board safety regime and how it's implimented. In December at the Antigua show, whilst I was talking from the dock to a deckie on the swim platform, a fellow crew member strolled up and grabbed hold of an overhead mooring line then proceeded to swing and climb his way to the dock. No helmet, lifejacket or some kind of safety line or harness. The gap between the big yacht and the dock was approx 25 cm. It was a 3m drop to either the swim deck or dock.It would have been a heavy drop onto a very hard surface, and not into the water. He got himself onto the dock with a big smile and raised his arms in triumph to some of the other crew watching who cheered 'well done, mate!" etc...he was very pleased with himself, I asked 'why did you do that?" " Couldn't be arsed to walk to the gangway, ey", (30 m away) was his reply. 'What would your captain say if he saw you do that?" i asked "Probably would have been pretty chuffed, it was a good job ey?" I replied "Well, I pity him for the letter he could be sending to your parents, or the hospital bills, headlines, possible litigation and funeral costs." He just shrugged and laughed it off. Young, invincible, unsound and unsafe!. Interested in any comments.
The people defending the fender climber probably defend doing back flips off the higher decks.
Fenders are silly expensive and meant for one purpose otherwise they'd have other intended uses listed when you buy them.

Never misuse fender equipment. Never.
The fact that she was claiming, immediately flags dangerous which is why anyone claiming on anything should be aware of safety issues. She probably thought she was being clever. It only takes one slip, foot or hand in the wrong place. Another boat could of passed at speed making the smaller boat raise up and knock her off. So many potential dangers.

In America the state technically own the vehicles after it get registered. The people that buy the car never get the title, only a certificate of title. Because the constitution says slaves can not own property. Same for land. People pay property tax for the same reason. It’s a diction thing

PUBLIC SWRVICE ANNOUNCEMENT Do not EVER go over he side of ANY vessel without a life jacket...this is not a designated swimming area, it is a vessel thoroughfare! You have no idea what sort of currents are below the waterline. Also, she had a 0% chance of hitting the water anyway, and a 100% of hitting at least the boat she climbed from. Secondly, a little education on fenders...the rope securing those fenders are not meant to be load bearing, they only have to support the weight of the fender itself, because they aren't made to support North and South loads, only east to west loads, i.e. a vessel compressing it into a other surface. Which is why they have it tied to a hand rail that serves pretty much the same purpose as the fender, not meant to be climbed on and load baring. ANYBODY that says that's sage practice, I wouldn't trust on a kayak, let alone my 100s of millions $ yacht, not even as a cook. It's kind of hard to swim with broken legs, in water that's nasty, dark, and clearly over your head. But even if she never makes it to the water, she could've been injured or killed by just the fall, and guess what...with that video, no insurance company is going to pay you or your family. Defend her all you want, there's nothing safe about it...and there's not such thing as "not that dangerous ", it's either dangerous, or it's not. If that were my yacht, I see 3 fired employees, maybe a crew replacement.
I agree totally. When I was probably 55 years old I stepped wrongly from a floating dock into my dinghy and it immediately turned up onto it's side and I was in the harbor. Cool to cold State of Maine salt water with a hard running tide that pulled the dinghy i/3 to 1/2 under the floating dock quickly. Totally my fault the way I stepped BUT luckily since I always wore my life jacket when using the dinghy I quickly popped up never got my head wet and was able to pull and climb up the side of the float the 1.5 to 2 ft distance and back onto it and then dealt with pulling the dinghy back from under. If I hadn't had the life jacket on I could have easily ended up under the float and I don't think that anyone even saw this happen.

People get by with all kinds of unsafe things until they don't. Pointing out unsafe things to someone may save their live or someone they care about. Anyone who would condone such behavior has apparently been fortunate so far. As for you not having been on a sailing yacht, .... haven't got a clue. Makes as much sense as climbing a fender and the line holding it.
What is less unsafe in some circumstances still leads to bad habits from 'muscle memory'. I well recall my week on a 70' youth-training ketch. We were 12 adults trying out for volunteer 2nd & 3rd Mates. Many of my more experienced shipmates had a hard time tailing the winches with pinky-fingers towards the mechanism - they were used to smaller yachts and dinghies, where the loads are much less and discipline was less necessary, and thumbs are at less risk. Because I had the least experience, I had no trouble.

Your comment on an automobile driver asserting that a police officer could not prove that the driver owned the car is a poor comparison. Here in California, at least, the car must be carrying the current registration form issued by the state. That form shows the registered owner and the legal owner. The "pink slip" is a state issued form that identifies the legal owner, effectively title to the car. The car owner and the driver are required to carry insurance or have a registered bond that carries the names of the owner and the registered owner. It would be very easy for a police officer to determine the owner and registered owner. Here the driver is responsible for the safe operation of the vehicle even if he/she is not the owner. Too bad a similar system does not apply to yachts. Penguins are not concerned about paying a fare to cruise on a yacht.

I see the fender incident from two different angles. Frankly i think society has got too wrapped up in safety. By that i mean everything has to be 100% sanitised and made 100% safe. While accept that people getting hurt or killed etc is sad not allowing people to take risks is also insanely boring and controlling. In reality what she did was not overly unsafe and in reality it would have been quite unique for her to get seriously injured (crippled, brain damaged etc broken limbs are not serious)or killed doing what she was doing.
Have no idea why some who watch you are so negative. Jealous of your success, perhaps. I’ve watched a couple of years now just to keep tabs on the fortunes of the oligarchs. Can’t wait for all their ships to be sold and the money given to Ukraine. If they keep sailing out of windows, they won’t need their yachts anyway. I appreciate your good work, thanks.

The owner of the vessel is a Russian government worker building military vehicles for the Russian government to be used in Ukraine.

Climbing a fender like that is irresponsible, amateurish, not to mention dangerous. It's something you'd expect to see someone do on a pontoon party boat after drinking a six pack.

What a bunch of melodramatic BS over someone climbing onto a baot.Over 78000 people slipped and fell in the bathtub last year. I suppose they should have had a helmet, a life jacket and climbing boots on. We have all done dumb things. Most of us are lucky we made it through our childhood alive. A lot of skilled trades workets stick there necks out to get the job done. I hope this isn't what this chanel is going to come to, I like boats.
